Chapter 7: The Woman Behind the Mask
Daniel stared at the envelope like it was something dangerous.
“Why is my name on that?””
Vanessa didn’t answer.
She placed it on the table.
“Because you deserve to know who I was before you married me.””
Nobody moved.
The old Vanessa would have controlled the moment.
She would have cried.
She would have blamed someone.
But now?
She looked exhausted.
Like she had been carrying a secret too heavy for too long.
Daniel picked up the envelope.
“Did you write this?””
She shook her head.
“No.””
“Then who did?””
Vanessa looked at me.
“Me.””
I frowned.
“What?””
“I wrote it years ago.””
Daniel opened it.
Inside was another letter.
A confession.
His eyes moved across the page.
Then stopped.
I watched his face change.
Not anger.
Not betrayal.
Something worse.
Disappointment.
“What does it say?”” I asked.
He looked at Vanessa.
“You planned this.””
Vanessa looked away.
“Planned what?””
“Our entire relationship.””
The words echoed.
I felt cold.
Daniel continued reading.
“She wrote about me before she met me.””
Vanessa closed her eyes.
“I knew who you were.””
Daniel laughed once.
A painful sound.
“How?””
“My friend worked with your company.””
“And?””
“And she told me you were lonely.””
I felt my stomach twist.
Vanessa continued.
“You had just lost your business partner. You didn’t trust anyone. You were angry.””
Daniel stared at her.
“And you thought that made me easy to manipulate.””
“No.””
“Yes.””
The certainty in his voice stopped her.
“You studied me.””
Vanessa whispered:
“I wanted someone who wouldn’t leave.””
Daniel looked at the letter again.
There were notes.
Details.
Things Vanessa had written about him.
His favorite coffee.
His childhood.
His fears.
Things he had never told her.
“You were researching me.””
“I was trying to understand you.””
“No.””
Daniel stepped back.
“You were building a version of yourself that you thought I would love.””
Vanessa’s eyes filled.
“Because I knew the real me wasn’t enough.””
That sentence silenced everyone.
Even Daniel.
Because beneath all the lies was something painfully human.
Vanessa wasn’t born cruel.
She became cruel because she believed love was something she had to earn.
But instead of asking for love, she learned to control it.
And everyone around her paid the price.
Daniel folded the letter.
“Why did you push her?””
Vanessa looked at me.
A long pause.
Then she said:
“Because everyone was watching her.””
I frowned.
“What?””
“The whole night.””
Her voice became smaller.
“You walked in and people immediately came to you.””
“That’s not true.””
“It is.””
She laughed softly.
“You don’t even realize it.””
I remembered the party.
Guests asking about my recovery.
People complimenting my strength.
People telling me how brave I was.
Vanessa saw all of that.
And hated it.
“You had one conversation with someone and they cared,” she whispered.
“And you couldn’t stand it?””
She looked down.
“I wanted the attention back.””
Daniel looked horrified.
“By hurting her?””
Vanessa didn’t answer.
That was the answer.
The resort manager approached us then.
“Mr. Carter?””
Daniel turned.
“Yes?””
The manager looked uncomfortable.
“There’s something else you should know.””
Daniel frowned.
“What now?””
The manager handed him a folder.
“We reviewed the pool footage again.””
My heart sank.
“What did you find?””
The manager hesitated.
“There was someone else near the pool.””
Daniel opened the folder.
Inside was a printed image from the security camera.
A person standing behind the guests.
Watching.
Waiting.
My blood ran cold.
Because I recognized the person immediately.
It was someone Vanessa had invited.
Someone who had disappeared right after the accident.
Someone who had a reason to hate me.
Daniel looked at the picture.
Then looked at Vanessa.
“Who is this?””
Vanessa didn’t answer.
May you like
She just whispered:
“He wasn’t supposed to be here.””
