Chapter 4: The Lie She Built Her Life On

Daniel didn’t ask Vanessa who Mark was in the lobby.

He waited.

That was what made Vanessa nervous.

She expected anger.

She expected shouting.

She knew how to fight anger.

But silence?

Silence gave people time to think.

And Daniel was thinking.

Later that afternoon, he found me sitting near the beach.

The waves moved slowly against the shore.

“You knew something was wrong,” he said.

I looked at him.

“With Vanessa?””

He nodded.

I hesitated.

“I knew something was wrong with everyone who believed her.””

He sat beside me.

“I need to know the truth.””

So I told him.

Not every detail.

Not every painful memory.

But enough.

I told him how Vanessa had lied about me ruining her birthday when we were teenagers.

How she had told our relatives I was jealous when I refused to cover her mistakes.

How she had taken credit for ideas I created.

How she always apologized only after she got caught.

Daniel listened.

When I finished, he said something I never expected.

“I believe you.””

Two simple words.

But I felt the weight of them.

Because for years, I had been trying to prove myself to people who had already decided not to believe me.

That evening, Daniel confronted Vanessa at the resort restaurant.

I wasn’t there.

But he later told me everything.

Vanessa sat across from him, twisting her engagement ring.

“Mark was before you,” she said.

Daniel’s voice was calm.

“Who is he?””

“A mistake.””

“That’s not an answer.””

She looked down.

“He was someone I dated.””

“And?””

“And he didn’t want me.””

Daniel stared.

“So you lied?””

Vanessa looked up.

“What?””

“You told me you had never been serious with anyone before me.””

She swallowed.

“I was embarrassed.””

“That’s not the problem.””

“Then what is?””

“The problem is that you created a completely fake version of yourself.””

Vanessa’s eyes filled with tears.

But Daniel didn’t move.

“What does Mark have to do with my sister?””

Nothing.

Then why did you panic?

She looked away.

And that was enough.

Daniel leaned forward.

“Vanessa.””

Finally, she admitted it.

Mark had contacted her because he had discovered something.

Something she had hidden.

Years ago, before meeting Daniel, Vanessa had worked at a company where Mark was her supervisor.

She had been fired after a serious mistake.

Instead of accepting responsibility, she blamed another employee.

That employee?

Me.

I had never worked there.

But Vanessa had used my name.

She had told people I caused problems.

The lie had followed her.

And now Mark had proof.

Proof that Vanessa had manipulated everyone.

Including Daniel.

When Daniel told me, I couldn’t speak.

“She blamed me for something I wasn’t even involved in?””

He nodded.

“She built a story where she was always the victim.””

I looked toward the ocean.

My sister hadn’t just hurt me.

She had rewritten reality.

The next day, Daniel made a decision.

He called the wedding venue.

He canceled the ceremony.

Not postponed.

Canceled.

Vanessa found out an hour later.

She called me.

I almost didn’t answer.

But I did.

“What do you want?”” I asked.

Her voice was shaking.

“You ruined my life.””

I closed my eyes.

“No, Vanessa.””

“Yes, you did.””

“You did that yourself.””

She was silent.

Then she whispered:

“You think you won.””

I looked at the phone.

“I never wanted to win.””

A long pause.

Then she said:

“You don’t know what Daniel found.””

My heart tightened.

“What are you talking about?””

Her voice dropped.

“Ask him why he really believed me at the beginning.””

I frowned.

“What?””

“Ask him how we met.””

The call ended.

I stared at the screen.

May you like

Because suddenly, for the first time, I wondered something.

What if Vanessa wasn’t the only person hiding something?
