Chapter 5: The Truth Daniel Never Told Me

I found Daniel standing outside the resort lobby.

He knew immediately something was wrong.

“What happened?””

I held up my phone.

“Vanessa called.””

His expression changed.

“What did she say?””

I looked at him.

“She told me to ask how you met her.””

Daniel went completely still.

That scared me.

Because Daniel had always been calm.

Even when he confronted Vanessa.

Even when he canceled the wedding.

But now?

He looked afraid.

“Daniel?””

He looked away.

“I should have told you.””

My stomach dropped.

“Told me what?””

He sat down slowly.

“When I met Vanessa, it wasn’t random.””

The ocean breeze suddenly felt colder.

“What does that mean?””

He rubbed his hands together.

“Three years ago, I was going through a difficult time. My business partner betrayed me. I was angry. I trusted the wrong people.””

I listened quietly.

“Vanessa knew.””

“How?””

“She heard about it from someone.””

“Who?””

Daniel looked at me.

“Mark.””

My heart sank.

The name again.

“Mark introduced you?””

Daniel nodded.

“I thought he was just helping me meet new people.””

“And Vanessa knew all this?””

“Yes.””

I waited.

Daniel took a breath.

“She approached me first.””

The words landed heavily.

“She approached you?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

His silence answered before he did.

“She knew exactly what I needed to hear.””

I stared at him.

Daniel looked ashamed.

“She made herself seem like the only person who understood me.””

A bitter laugh escaped.

“She told me everyone else had abandoned her too.””

I looked down.

The pattern was obvious.

Vanessa didn’t just create enemies.

She created connections based on sympathy.

Then she controlled the story.

“She manipulated you,” I whispered.

Daniel nodded.

“I think she did.””

The next morning, Daniel and I met Mark.

He was nothing like I expected.

He wasn’t angry.

He wasn’t trying to destroy Vanessa.

He simply looked tired.

“I didn’t want this to happen,” Mark said.

Daniel crossed his arms.

“Then why tell me now?””

Mark looked at me.

“Because I saw what happened at the pool.””

My breath caught.

“You were there?””

He nodded.

“I was one of the guests.””

I hadn’t noticed him.

There were too many people.

“I saw Vanessa push you.””

Daniel looked at him.

“And?””

Mark sighed.

“And I realized she hadn’t changed.””

He reached into his bag.

Then he placed a folder on the table.

Inside were documents.

Emails.

Messages.

Proof.

Vanessa had spent years creating false stories about people who threatened her.

Former coworkers.

Friends.

Family members.

And me.

Daniel looked through the pages silently.

Then he stopped.

His face changed.

“What is this?””

I looked at the paper.

It was an old message.

A message from Vanessa.

About me.

The words blurred.

But I could read one sentence clearly.

*“She doesn’t know yet, but everyone will believe me before they believe her.””*

My hands started shaking.

Daniel closed the folder.

“That’s enough.””

But it wasn’t the end.

Because when we returned to the resort, Vanessa was waiting.

She wasn’t angry.

She wasn’t crying.

She was smiling.

A calm, terrifying smile.

“I knew you would find out eventually,” she said.

Daniel stepped forward.

“Vanessa—”

She raised her hand.

“No.””

Then she looked at me.

“You want the truth?””

I didn’t answer.

She smiled wider.

“The reason I hated you was never because you were better than me.””

A pause.

“It was because you were the only person who knew who I really was.””

The lobby went silent.

Then she reached into her purse.

She pulled out a small envelope.

And placed it in my hand.

“I kept this for fifteen years.””

I stared at the envelope.

My name was written across the front.

In my mother’s handwriting.

May you like

The handwriting of someone who had been dead for ten years.

And inside was a letter that Vanessa never wanted me to read.
