Chapter 7: The Family Secret

Mateo spent the entire night reading.

Every document.

Every email.

Every photograph.

Every piece of evidence Alejandro had collected.

And every page destroyed another piece of the story Mateo had believed his entire life.

His father, Ricardo Valdés, had always been a hero in his eyes.

A businessman.

A visionary.

A man who built the family fortune from nothing.

That was the story Mateo grew up hearing.

But the documents told another story.

Ricardo had built his empire by making enemies.

Dangerous ones.

People he betrayed.

People he abandoned.

People who waited years for revenge.

And Sebastián had inherited more than his father's company.

He had inherited his father's hunger.

Mateo arrived home just before sunrise.

Camila was sitting on the couch.

She immediately knew something was wrong.

"What happened?""

Mateo placed the documents on the table.

"My father.""

Camila looked confused.

"What about him?""

Mateo sat down.

"Everything I knew about my family was a lie.""

They spent hours going through the files.

Camila read carefully.

Unlike Mateo, she didn't react with anger first.

She looked for patterns.

Questions.

Missing pieces.

Finally, she pointed to one document.

"This date.""

Mateo looked.

"What about it?""

"This was two weeks before your father died.""

"So?""

Camila looked at him.

"Your father transferred a large amount of money to someone.""

Mateo frowned.

"Who?""

She turned the paper around.

The name was partially hidden.

But the signature was visible.

Mateo's blood ran cold.

Because he recognized it.

"Sebastián.""

Camila nodded.

"And there is something else.""

She pointed at the bottom.

A second signature.

Mateo stared.

"Who is that?""

Camila looked at him.

"You know.""

He didn't.

Then she whispered:

"Your mother.""

Mateo had not spoken about his mother in years.

Not because he didn't remember.

Because remembering hurt.

She had died when he was sixteen.

A quiet woman.

Kind.

The opposite of the men in his family.

He had always believed she knew nothing about business.

Nothing about the family's darker side.

But now...

Maybe she knew everything.

That afternoon, Mateo visited the old family house.

The mansion had been sold after the scandal.

But he still had access to the storage room.

Years of memories sat inside boxes.

Photographs.

Letters.

Old documents.

He searched for hours.

Then he found a hidden compartment inside his mother's old desk.

Inside was a letter.

His name was written on the envelope.

Mateo.

His hands shook.

He opened it.

The handwriting was familiar.

"My son,

If you are reading this, then the truth has finally reached you.

I am sorry.

I spent years trying to protect you from the ugliness of this family.

But protection became another form of silence.

Your father was not the man you believed.

Neither was Sebastián.

And one day, you may discover you are not either.

But remember this:

A person's blood does not decide who they become.

Their choices do.""

Mateo stopped reading.

Tears blurred the page.

At the bottom was one final sentence.

"I hope you choose differently.""

That evening, Mateo returned home.

Camila found him sitting alone.

"You found something.""

He nodded.

"My mother knew.""

Camila sat beside him.

"What did she say?""

Mateo handed her the letter.

She read it silently.

Then she looked at him.

"She believed you could change.""

Mateo laughed bitterly.

"She believed wrong.""

"No.""

Camila shook her head.

"She believed before you did.""

The next day, Mateo and Alejandro met again.

They decided to work together.

Not as friends.

Not yet.

As two men trying to stop the same disaster.

But they quickly discovered something.

Sebastián wasn't running.

He was preparing.

He knew they were coming.

And he had one final weapon.

Public opinion.

That night, every news channel reported the same story.

"Former CEO Mateo Valdés accused of financial crimes.""

Mateo watched the television in silence.

Then his phone rang.

Sebastián.

He answered.

"Enjoying the show?""

Mateo's voice was cold.

"You framed me.""

Sebastián laughed.

"No.""

A pause.

"I simply reminded everyone who you really are.""

Mateo clenched his fist.

"You think this will save you?""

"No.""

Sebastián sounded almost happy.

"It will destroy you.""

"Why?""

Sebastián answered:

"Because tomorrow, I'm releasing the one thing that even Camila won't forgive.""

The call ended.

Mateo stared at the phone.

Then he looked toward the bedroom.

Where Camila and their daughter slept.

And for the first time in years…

he was afraid of losing them for a different reason.

May you like

Not because of his mistakes.

But because of a truth he still didn't know.
