Chapter 6: The Price of the Truth
The first thing Mateo learned after losing everything was that silence had a sound.
It sounded like an empty office.
Like a phone that stopped ringing.
Like footsteps that disappeared when people no longer needed anything from you.
Six months earlier, Mateo had walked through crowds of people who wanted his attention.
Now he walked through a quiet neighborhood where nobody knew his name.
And somehow, that felt more honest.
The small apartment he rented had peeling paint near the kitchen window. The furniture was simple. The coffee machine was cheap.
Nothing about it impressed anyone.
And that was exactly why Mateo liked it.
He stood by the window one morning, watching his daughter sleep in her crib.
Lucía.
The name Camila had chosen.
Mateo had wanted something powerful.
Something that sounded like a legacy.
Camila had smiled and said:
"She doesn't need a powerful name. She needs parents who show up.""
At the time, he had thought she was criticizing him.
Now he understood she was giving him one last chance.
A chance he almost wasted.
"You're staring again.""
Mateo turned.
Camila stood in the doorway holding two cups of coffee.
Her hair was tied back.
She looked tired.
But peaceful.
A year ago, Mateo would have noticed only her beauty.
Now he noticed the small things.
The way she rubbed her wrist when she was stressed.
The way she checked the baby monitor twice before leaving the room.
The way she smiled even when she was exhausted.
"I was thinking," he said.
Camila handed him a coffee.
"That's dangerous.""
He smiled slightly.
"I deserve that.""
She sat beside him.
For a while, they watched their daughter sleep.
Then Camila spoke.
"Are you happy?""
The question surprised him.
Mateo looked at her.
"Why are you asking?""
"Because you lost the mansion, the company, the cars, the people who called you their friend.""
She looked toward the window.
"And I wonder if you miss that life.""
Mateo thought about it.
The parties.
The power.
The applause.
Then he thought about the night she called him seventeen times.
"No.""
Camila studied him.
"No?""
"I miss who I thought I was.""
He looked at his daughter.
"But I don't miss who I became.""
The honesty made Camila quiet.
For months, she had been waiting for Mateo to say that.
Not because she wanted him punished.
Because she wanted to know if there was anything left to save.
But the past was not finished with Mateo.
That afternoon, he received a visit.
Sebastián.
His older brother.
The man who had manipulated him.
The man who had destroyed Alejandro.
The man who had nearly destroyed him too.
Mateo opened the door but didn't invite him inside.
"What do you want?""
Sebastián looked different.
The confidence was gone.
The expensive suit remained, but it no longer carried power.
"You look comfortable.""
Mateo's expression hardened.
"Don't pretend you came here to talk about my apartment.""
Sebastián sighed.
"I need your help.""
Mateo almost laughed.
"You need my help?""
"Yes.""
"After everything?""
Sebastián looked away.
"Things changed.""
"No.""
Mateo stepped closer.
"You changed.""
Silence.
Then Sebastián said:
"The investigation is getting closer.""
Mateo froze.
"What investigation?""
Sebastián looked at him.
"The financial crimes from five years ago.""
Mateo felt his stomach tighten.
"But you said everything was covered.""
"I was wrong.""
The words sounded impossible coming from him.
Mateo stared.
"Why should I care?""
Sebastián swallowed.
"Because if they find everything, they won't just come after me.""
Mateo understood.
"They'll come after me too.""
Sebastián didn't answer.
He didn't need to.
That night, Mateo told Camila everything.
She listened quietly.
When he finished, she asked:
"Are you afraid?""
He looked at her.
"Yes.""
She nodded.
"Good.""
Mateo frowned.
"Good?""
"Fear means you finally understand consequences.""
He sat down.
"I spent years thinking I could control everything.""
Camila reached for his hand.
"You can't control what happens next.""
She looked at him.
"But you can control what kind of person you are when it happens.""
The next morning, Mateo went to see Alejandro.
The meeting took place at Alejandro's new company.
Unlike Mateo's old office, it wasn't designed to intimidate.
It was bright.
Open.
Full of employees actually working.
Alejandro looked up when Mateo entered.
"I didn't expect you.""
"I need your help.""
Alejandro leaned back.
"That sentence sounds familiar.""
Mateo accepted the insult.
"I know.""
A long silence followed.
Then Alejandro asked:
"Why should I help you?""
Mateo looked down.
Because once, he would have answered with pride.
With excuses.
With manipulation.
Instead, he said:
"You shouldn't.""
Alejandro raised an eyebrow.
"But?""
"But I'm asking anyway.""
Alejandro studied him.
"What changed?""
Mateo looked around the office.
"You.""
Alejandro frowned.
"What?""
"You saved my wife when I abandoned her.""
The words were difficult.
"But you didn't do it because you wanted something from me.""
Mateo looked at him.
"You did it because it was right.""
Alejandro said nothing.
Then slowly opened a drawer.
Inside was a file.
"I've been waiting for this day.""
Mateo looked at it.
"What is that?""
"Evidence.""
"Against Sebastián?""
Alejandro nodded.
"But there's something you need to know.""
Mateo opened the file.
The first page made him stop breathing.
A photograph.
Sebastián.
And someone else.
Someone Mateo thought was impossible.
His own father.
Mateo stared at the picture for several seconds.
Then he whispered:
"My father died ten years ago.""
Alejandro's voice was quiet.
"I know.""
"Then explain this.""
Alejandro looked at the photograph.
"Your father wasn't the victim you thought he was.""
Mateo looked up.
"What are you saying?""
Alejandro slid another document across the desk.
"He started this.""
Mateo read the page.

And for the first time in years…
he wondered if the betrayal he suffered was much older than he ever imagined.
