Chapter 5: The Enemy Who Saved Her

The name on the document stayed in Mateo's mind all night.

His older brother.

Sebastián Valdés.

The man who had taught him how to negotiate.

The man who had congratulated him when Alejandro lost everything.

The man who had always said:

"Family comes first.""

Mateo sat alone in the study until sunrise.

The empty whiskey glass in front of him reflected his face.

A face he barely recognized.

Camila entered quietly.

"You didn't sleep.""

Mateo looked up.

"No.""

She sat across from him.

For the first time in weeks, they sat in silence without pretending everything was fine.

"I don't know who I am anymore," Mateo admitted.

Camila looked at him.

"Maybe that's the first honest thing you've said.""

He swallowed.

"I lost everything.""

She shook her head.

"No.""

Her voice softened.

"You lost the version of yourself that you created.""

That hurt.

Because it was true.

Mateo confronted Sebastián that afternoon.

His brother was sitting in the family office, reviewing documents like nothing had happened.

"You knew I would come eventually.""

Mateo stopped.

"You knew?""

Sebastián smiled.

"Of course.""

Mateo threw the documents onto the desk.

"You ruined Alejandro.""

Sebastián leaned back.

"No.""

"I watched him lose everything.""

"And you took everything.""

The room went silent.

Mateo stared.

Sebastián continued.

"Do you know what your problem was, Mateo?""

Mateo said nothing.

"You always wanted to be the winner.""

Sebastián smiled.

"So I gave you a way to win.""

The words were disgusting.

Because they sounded familiar.

Because Mateo had once believed the same thing.

"Why?""

Sebastián shrugged.

"Because you were easy to manipulate.""

Mateo stepped closer.

"You used me.""

"Yes.""

No hesitation.

No regret.

That was worse.

Sebastián opened a drawer.

Inside were copies of documents.

Photos.

Recordings.

"I kept everything.""

Mateo froze.

"You planned this?""

"I planned for the day you became inconvenient.""

Two days later, the truth began spreading.

Not through rumors.

Through evidence.

Alejandro released documents proving the betrayal.

Camila gave her testimony.

And Mateo finally admitted his own actions publicly.

The media destroyed him.

The company board removed him.

The friends who once cheered for him disappeared.

The same people who had raised their glasses with him now avoided his name.

But strangely…

Mateo felt lighter.

Because for the first time, he wasn't pretending.

Months later, Camila held their daughter in her arms.

Mateo stood beside the hospital bed.

A different man.

Not perfect.

But different.

Alejandro visited that morning.

He looked at the baby and smiled.

"She looks like her mother.""

Mateo nodded.

"She does.""

A quiet moment passed.

Then Mateo said:

"I'm sorry.""

Alejandro looked at him.

"I know.""

"No, you don't.""

Mateo took a breath.

"I'm sorry for the person I became.""

Alejandro studied him.

Then nodded.

"That's the first apology I believe.""

Camila smiled faintly.

The three of them stood there.

Three people connected by betrayal.

But also survival.

A year later, Mateo sat in a small office.

Not a mansion.

Not a luxury tower.

Just a simple room where he worked honestly.

His phone rang.

He looked at the screen.

For a second, fear crossed his face.

Then he smiled.

It was Camila.

He answered immediately.

"Hey.""

Her voice came through.

"Can you pick up some milk on your way home?""

Mateo laughed.

"Of course.""

A normal call.

A simple request.

A chance he almost lost forever.

After hanging up, he looked at an old photo on his desk.

The night of his greatest mistake.

The night he ignored seventeen calls.

The night he thought he was choosing freedom.

He had been wrong.

He wasn't losing his freedom.

He was losing the people who loved him.

And the man he hated most?

The man he once believed destroyed his life?

Alejandro was the reason his wife and daughter were alive.

The reason the truth came out.

The reason Mateo finally became someone worth forgiving.

Because sometimes the person standing against you isn't your enemy.

May you like

Sometimes…

they are the only person willing to save you from yourself.
