Chapter 3: The Hidden Betrayal
Mateo stared at the document.
His hands became cold.
"No.""
Alejandro watched him carefully.
"You know that signature.""
Mateo looked up.
"Where did you get this?""
"From the company archives.""
Mateo shook his head.
"That's impossible.""
The paper trembled slightly.
Five years earlier.
Before the money.
Before the mansion.
Before the arrogance.
Mateo and Alejandro had been partners.
Two young men trying to build something.
They had promised each other they would never become enemies.
Then success arrived.
And success revealed who they really were.
Mateo became obsessed with being admired.
Alejandro became obsessed with building something lasting.
The difference destroyed them.
"You forged this," Mateo said.
Alejandro's jaw tightened.
"No.""
"You expect me to believe I signed over control?""
"I expect you to remember.""
Mateo looked at Camila.
She was watching them.
Confused.
"Remember what?""
Neither man answered.
The silence told her enough.
Camila looked at Mateo.
"What aren't you telling me?""
Mateo hated that question.
Because he had spent years hiding answers.
"I can explain.""
Alejandro gave a humorless laugh.
"That sentence should be printed on his business cards.""
"Enough," Mateo snapped.
Alejandro stepped closer.
"Do you want to know what happened the night you betrayed me?""
Camila looked between them.
"Mateo?""
He couldn't speak.
Because he remembered.
Five years earlier.
The company was failing.
Mateo had discovered a secret investment opportunity.
One that could save everything.
But Alejandro refused.
"It's too risky," Alejandro had said.
Mateo had slammed his hand on the desk.
"You always think you're smarter than me.""
"I'm trying to protect what we built.""
"No. You're afraid.""
Alejandro had looked disappointed.
"Mateo, ambition without control destroys people.""
Mateo had walked away.
The next morning, Alejandro discovered contracts had been changed.
Money had been moved.
And Mateo had taken credit.
He claimed Alejandro had made mistakes.
The board believed Mateo.
Alejandro lost his position.
Mateo gained everything.
But there was one person who knew the truth.
Camila.
Because she had seen the original documents.
And she had protected Mateo anyway.
Now, in the hospital room, Camila whispered:
"You lied to him.""
Mateo looked at her.
"What?""
She closed her eyes.
"I knew something happened.""
"You knew?""
"I knew you weren't telling the truth.""
Mateo felt exposed.
"Why didn't you say anything?""
"Because I loved you.""
That hurt more than anger.
Camila turned away.
"That was my mistake.""
Days passed.
Camila recovered slowly.
Mateo tried to return home.
But nothing felt the same.
The mansion felt empty.
The walls felt like they were judging him.
One evening, he entered the nursery.
The room he had designed.
The room he had barely helped create.
A small crib sat near the window.
A folded blanket rested inside.
Then his phone rang.
Unknown number.
He answered.
"Hello?""
A woman's voice spoke.
"Mr. Valdés, you need to know something about your wife.""
Mateo frowned.
"Who is this?""
"I worked for your family five years ago.""
His expression changed.
"Say your name.""
A pause.
Then:
"Elena.""
Mateo froze.
Elena.
The former accountant.
The woman who disappeared after Alejandro's downfall.
"Why are you calling me?""
Her voice lowered.
"Because Alejandro isn't the only one who has evidence.""
Mateo gripped the phone.
"What evidence?""
The woman whispered:
"The night you destroyed him… you weren't alone.""
The call ended.
Mateo stood in silence.
Then he heard footsteps behind him.
Camila.
May you like
She was standing at the nursery door.
And she had heard everything.
