Chapter 10: The Man Who Finally Answered
Ten years later, Mateo still remembered the sound.
The ringing.
Seventeen times.
Sometimes, in the quiet hours before sunrise, he could still hear it.
Not the actual phone.
The memory.
The warning.
The moment before everything changed.
But now, when his phone rang at night, he never ignored it.
Never.
Even if it was a wrong number.
Even if it was a sales call.
Even if it was nothing important.
He answered.
Because once, someone important called.
And he didn't.
Mateo stood outside the hospital room.
The same hospital where Camila almost died.
The same hallway where Alejandro had waited.
The same place where Mateo learned that love was not proven by promises.
It was proven by presence.
But this time, he wasn't there because someone was dying.
He was there because someone was being born.
His son.
Camila held the newborn in her arms.
Mateo stood beside her, overwhelmed.
Another child.
Another chance.
Another reminder of what he almost lost.
"He has your eyes," Camila whispered.
Mateo smiled.
"I hope he gets your patience.""
She laughed.
"Then he'll survive you.""
Years ago, that joke would have offended him.
Now, he laughed too.
Later that day, Alejandro visited.
He walked into the room carrying a small gift.
Mateo smiled.
"You still bring gifts?""
Alejandro shrugged.
"I learned from your daughter. She expects them.""
Mateo laughed.
The friendship between them had returned slowly.
Not like before.
Better.
Because before, their friendship was built on ambition.
Now it was built on truth.
Alejandro looked at the baby.
"Congratulations.""
"Thank you.""
A quiet moment passed.
Then Mateo said:
"I used to think you wanted my life.""
Alejandro looked at him.
"I know.""
"I was wrong.""
Alejandro smiled slightly.
"Yes.""
Mateo laughed.
"You're still impossible.""
"And you're still annoying.""
For the first time, they both laughed like brothers again.
That evening, Mateo returned home with his family.
The mansion was gone.
The expensive cars were gone.
The parties were gone.
But the house was full.
Full of noise.
Full of toys.
Full of life.
Camila watched their children playing.
Then she looked at Mateo.
"Do you ever miss it?""
He knew what she meant.
The old life.
The power.
The attention.
The illusion.
Mateo thought carefully.
"No.""
She smiled.
"Not even a little?""
He shook his head.
"The old me would.""
Camila looked at him.
"And the new you?""
Mateo looked around.
At his children.
At her.
At the life he almost destroyed.
"The new me knows I already had everything.""
Years later, when people asked Mateo about the biggest mistake he ever made, they expected him to talk about business.
The failed investments.
The lost company.
The betrayal.
But he always gave the same answer.
"I ignored a phone call.""
People laughed.
They thought he was joking.
They didn't understand.
Because they didn't know what was on the other side of that call.
A woman who loved him.
A child who needed him.
A life waiting for him to choose it.
On the anniversary of that night, Mateo returned to the old club.
It was different now.
Renovated.
Modern.
The VIP room where he once celebrated his selfishness was gone.
In its place was a small restaurant.
Families ate there.
Children laughed.
People celebrated ordinary moments.
Mateo sat by the window.
He placed his phone on the table.
It rang.
He looked down.
Camila.
He smiled immediately.
He answered before the first ring finished.
"Hey.""
Her voice came through.
"Where are you?""
"Somewhere I needed to visit.""
"Are you okay?""
Mateo looked around the room.
At the place where he almost lost everything.
"Yeah.""
A pause.
Then he said:
"Actually, I think I'm finally okay.""
When Mateo returned home, Camila was waiting.
Their children were asleep.
The house was quiet.
She looked at him.
"You went there.""
He nodded.
"You knew?""
"I always know.""
He smiled.
After everything, that was still true.
Camila stepped closer.
"Do you regret anything?""
Mateo thought about the question.
The old Mateo would have said no.
Because admitting regret felt like weakness.
The new Mateo answered differently.
"Yes.""
Camila waited.
"I regret becoming someone who needed to lose everything before understanding what mattered.""
She touched his face.
"But you understood.""
He nodded.
"Because someone saved me.""
She smiled.
"Who?""
Mateo looked toward the room where their children slept.
Then back at her.
"The people I almost lost.""
The world remembered Mateo Valdés as the businessman who fell.
The man who lost his fortune.
The man whose own family exposed him.
But those who truly knew him remembered something else.
They remembered the man who changed.
The man who admitted he was wrong.
The man who learned that power without love was empty.
And the man who never ignored another call again.
Because sometimes life gives you a warning.
Sometimes it gives you a second chance.
And sometimes…
the person you think is your worst enemy is the one who arrives in the darkness carrying the light.
The night Camila called seventeen times, Mateo thought he was choosing his freedom.
He didn't know he was choosing the moment that would destroy him.
May you like
And rebuild him.
Forever.
