Chapter 8: The Last Person I Trusted
My mother stood in the hospital hallway wearing a nurse’s uniform that wasn’t hers.
That image destroyed something inside me.
Not because she had betrayed me.
I already knew she had.
But because a small part of me still hoped she hadn’t.
A small part of me still wanted one person in my family to choose me.
That hope died when Detective Morgan arrested her.
My mother didn’t fight.
She didn’t cry.
She just looked at me.
“Rachel, please listen.””
I stared at her.
“Why?””
Her face crumbled.
“Because I was trying to fix it.””
“Fix what?””
“This family.””
I laughed.
“You poisoned me.””
“I didn’t mean for you to get hurt.””
The sentence made my blood run cold.
“You didn’t mean for me to get hurt?””
She looked down.
“I only gave them information.””
“What information?””
She said nothing.
Detective Morgan answered.
“Your schedule. Your meals. Your doctor appointments.””
I felt sick.
My own mother had handed me over.
My mother stepped forward.
“Rachel, I thought it would only affect the trust.””
I stared.
“The trust?””
Her voice became desperate.
“Your father promised everything would be divided fairly.””
“Fairly?””
I touched my stomach.
“My daughter almost died.””
Tears filled my mother’s eyes.
“I know.””
“No.””
My voice broke.
“You don’t know.””
For the first time, she looked ashamed.
Then Detective Morgan found something in her bag.
A small notebook.
Inside were dates.
Times.
Amounts.
Names.
Everything.
My mother wasn’t just involved.
She was keeping records.
She had been documenting the entire plan.
“Why?”” I whispered.
She looked at me.
“Because I knew they would turn on each other.””
Everyone froze.
“What?””
My mother swallowed.
“I knew Robert. I knew Claire. I knew Daniel’s mother.””
She looked exhausted.
“They would betray anyone to get that money.””
Detective Morgan narrowed her eyes.
“Then why help them?””
My mother looked at me.
“Because I thought I could control it.””
I almost couldn’t believe her.
Everyone believed they were smarter than the others.
Everyone thought they could use the situation.
Nobody thought about me.
Or my baby.
The next morning, Detective Morgan gathered everyone.
My father.
My sister.
My mother-in-law.
My mother.
And Daniel.
All in one room.
It felt unreal.
A family meeting.
Except nobody was family anymore.
Detective Morgan placed the evidence on the table.
“You all had different motives.””
Claire looked away.
My father looked angry.
My mother-in-law looked cold.
Daniel looked broken.
But then Detective Morgan placed one final document down.
“This changes everything.””
My father frowned.
“What is that?””
“The original trust agreement.””
My grandfather’s attorney had found it hidden in a safe.
Detective Morgan opened it.
“The trust was not activated by the baby’s birth.””
Everyone became still.
“What?””
She continued.
“It was activated when the baby’s guardian was proven trustworthy.””
My father laughed.
“That’s impossible.””
“No.””
Detective Morgan looked at him.
“That’s why your plan failed.””
She turned the page.
“Because the trust was never supposed to go to Rachel.””
Everyone looked confused.
Then she said:
“It was supposed to go to the person who protected Rachel from this family.””
My eyes moved to Daniel.
But Detective Morgan shook her head.
“No.””
My heart stopped.
“Then who?””
She placed a photograph on the table.
A photograph of a person I didn’t recognize.
Someone my grandfather had secretly chosen.
Someone who had been watching everything.
Someone who had saved evidence before it disappeared.
The name on the document made everyone silent.
Because it was a name I had never heard before.
My grandfather’s first daughter.
May you like
My father’s older sister.
A woman everyone believed died thirty years ago.
