Chapter 4: The Woman Behind The Poison

I spent the next hour trying to understand the impossible.

My mother.

My sister.

My father.

And now my mother-in-law.

All connected.

All somehow involved.

Daniel refused to sit down.

“That’s impossible.””

Detective Morgan looked at him.

“The camera footage doesn’t lie.””

“My mother loves Rachel.””

I looked at him.

“Does she?””

He froze.

Because suddenly, neither of us knew.

Three days later, Detective Morgan brought us evidence from my house.

A small container.

A prescription bottle.

And a handwritten note.

“The medication was mixed into food,” she explained.

My stomach turned.

“The casserole.””

Daniel looked sick.

“My mother brought that.””

Detective Morgan nodded.

“We need to question her.””

Before she could leave, Daniel’s phone rang.

He looked at the screen.

His face changed.

“It’s my mom.””

Everyone became silent.

“Answer it,” Detective Morgan said.

Daniel pressed the speaker.

“Mom?””

Her voice came through.

“Daniel, please don’t listen to them.””

His expression hardened.

“Listen to who?””

A pause.

Then she whispered:

“The police.””

My heart sank.

“Why would the police be after you?””

Silence.

Then she said something that made Daniel step backward.

“Because I did what had to be done.””

Nobody spoke.

Daniel’s face went pale.

“What did you do?””

“I protected you.””

“Protected me from what?””

“From losing everything.””

I felt a cold wave pass through me.

Daniel looked at me.

His eyes filled with horror.

“You knew about the trust.””

His mother started crying.

“I knew your grandfather hated outsiders controlling the money.””

“The money belongs to Rachel’s baby.””

“No,” she snapped.

Her voice changed.

“The money belongs to this family.””

Detective Morgan immediately signaled for recording.

“Keep her talking.””

Daniel swallowed.

“Mom, did you poison Rachel?””

A long silence.

Then:

“I didn’t know Claire would be so reckless.””

My knees weakened.

She admitted it.

She knew.

She planned it.

Daniel ended the call.

He looked broken.

Not angry.

Broken.

“My whole family…”

I reached for his hand.

“Daniel.””

He shook his head.

“I brought you into this.””

“No.””

“I trusted them.””

“So did I.””

Detective Morgan took the phone.

“We have enough for a warrant.””

But before she left, my phone received a message.

Unknown number.

One sentence.

*You think you know the truth. Ask your husband what happened the night your grandfather died.*

I stared at the screen.

Daniel saw it.

His face changed.

Not confusion.

Fear.

“Rachel…”

I looked at him.

“What?””

He didn’t answer.

That scared me more.

“Daniel.””

He sat down slowly.

“There’s something I never told you.””

My heart started racing.

“What?””

He looked toward the floor.

“The night your grandfather died…”

May you like

He swallowed.

“I wasn’t supposed to be there.””
