Chapter 6: The Man Who Was Supposed To Be Dead
I stared at the photograph until the faces blurred.
My grandfather.
Standing.
Alive.
The same man whose funeral I attended eight months earlier.
The same man whose cold hand I held before they closed the coffin.
The same man whose death had changed my entire life.
“No,” I whispered.
Detective Morgan placed the photograph on the table.
“I know how this looks.””
“It’s impossible.””
Daniel didn’t say anything.
That scared me more than the photograph.
Because if this was impossible, he should have laughed.
He should have told me it was fake.
Instead, he looked like a man watching a secret finally come back to destroy him.
I turned toward him.
“You knew.””
His eyes moved to mine.
“Rachel…”
“You knew he was alive.””
He looked away.
That was my answer.
My chest tightened.
The room suddenly felt too small.
“How long?””
Daniel swallowed.
“Since before our wedding.””
The words hit harder than any physical pain.
I felt like I had been kicked all over again.
“You married me knowing my grandfather was alive?””
“No.””
“You lied to me for years.””
“I was trying to protect you.””
I laughed, but there was no humor in it.
“Everyone keeps saying that.””
My voice broke.
“My father protected me. My sister protected herself. My mother-in-law protected your future. Everyone has a reason.””
Daniel stepped closer.
“I never wanted to hurt you.””
“But you did.””
He stopped.
Because he knew he had.
Detective Morgan cleared her throat.
“We need to focus. Your grandfather being alive changes everything.””
I looked at her.
“Why fake his death?””
She opened a folder.
“Because he believed someone wanted him gone.””
“Who?””
She looked at the documents.
“Your father.””
I closed my eyes.
I wanted to be shocked.
But somehow, I wasn’t.
My father had tried to destroy evidence.
He had hidden documents.
He had been connected to the trust.
But there was still one question.
“Why involve my sister?””
Detective Morgan answered quietly.
“Because your sister was desperate.””
She placed another document on the bed.
A debt report.
Claire’s name was at the top.
“She owed hundreds of thousands of dollars.””
I stared.
“From what?””
“Luxury purchases. Gambling debts. Loans.””
I remembered Claire’s expensive clothes.
The vacations she posted online.
The way she always complained that she deserved more.
“She thought the trust money would save her.””
Detective Morgan nodded.
“And your father convinced her that if your baby never survived, the inheritance could be redirected.””
My stomach turned.
My daughter.
They weren’t just trying to hurt me.
They were trying to erase her.
A knock came at the door.
Everyone turned.
A police officer entered.
“Detective, we found Robert Hayes.””
My heart jumped.
“Where?””
The officer looked uncomfortable.
“At the old family property.””
“And my grandfather?””
The officer hesitated.
“He’s there too.””
A few minutes later, I was watching my grandfather on a video call.
His face appeared on the screen.
Older.
Tired.
But alive.
“Rachel.””
Hearing his voice almost broke me.
“Why?””
His eyes filled with regret.
“I’m sorry.””
“That’s all you have?””
“I had to disappear.””
“You let me believe you died.””
“I thought it was the only way to keep you safe.””
I shook my head.
“No. You left me alone.””
He looked down.
“I made mistakes.””
“Everyone did.””
The silence hurt.
Finally, he said:
“Your father found out about the trust conditions.””
“So he planned everything?””
“Yes.””
“Did you know my baby was in danger?””
His expression changed.
That hesitation destroyed me.
“You suspected.””
“I suspected your father was becoming desperate.””
“But you didn’t tell me.””
“I was trying to gather proof.””
I looked away.
Proof.
Everyone wanted proof.
Nobody wanted to save me.
Then my grandfather said something that made me freeze.
“Rachel, there is one thing you need to know.””
I looked back.
“The trust was never about the money.””
“What?””
“The money was a test.””
My eyebrows pulled together.
“What are you talking about?””
He sighed.
“I knew someone in the family would eventually choose greed over love.””
The room went silent.
“The inheritance was designed to expose them.””
Detective Morgan leaned forward.
“How?””
My grandfather looked at her.
“There was another condition.””
“What condition?””
His eyes moved back to me.
“The child’s guardian would receive control only if they proved they were willing to protect the child above all else.””
I frowned.
“What does that mean?””
“It means the money was never supposed to go to someone who wanted it.””
A cold feeling spread through me.
“Then who was it supposed to go to?””
My grandfather looked at Daniel.
Nobody spoke.
Daniel went pale.
Because he knew.
I turned toward him.
“What?””
My grandfather answered.
“The person I trusted to protect you.””
Daniel looked at the floor.
And suddenly I understood.
The signature.
The secret meetings.
The lies.
The inheritance.
Everything.
My husband wasn’t just hiding the truth.
He was the person my grandfather had chosen.
But then why did he sign the transfer?
Why did his name appear on the documents?
Before I could ask, my grandfather said:
“Rachel, there is something Daniel never told you.””
Daniel closed his eyes.
My heart stopped.
“What?””
May you like
My grandfather’s voice became heavy.
“He was the one who helped me fake my death.””
