Chapter 3: The Family That Wanted My Silence

I watched the video again.

Then again.

Each time, I hoped I had misunderstood.

I hoped the angle was wrong.

I hoped my father’s nod meant something else.

Anything else.

But it didn’t.

My father had given my sister permission.

Daniel paced across the hospital room.

“I’m going to find him.””

I grabbed his arm.

“No.””

“Rachel—”

“No. We need to know everything first.””

Because a part of me was still fighting reality.

Robert Hayes was my father.

The man who taught me to ride a bicycle.

The man who stayed awake when I had pneumonia at ten years old.

The man who told me family protected family.

Except now I was realizing he meant something different.

Family protected itself.

Even when it was guilty.

Detective Morgan returned the next morning.

She placed several photographs on the table.

“Your mother’s folder was recovered.””

My heart sank.

“What was inside?””

“Documents related to the trust.””

Daniel looked angry.

“She hid them during a police investigation?””

“Yes.””

“What does that mean?””

Detective Morgan looked at me.

“It means your family knew the trust conditions had changed.””

I picked up the document.

The words blurred.

“What changed?””

She pointed.

“Your grandfather added an amendment.””

I read the line slowly.

The beneficiary would be the child, not the parents.

The money could not be controlled by anyone except the child’s legal guardian.

My hands trembled.

“So they couldn’t access it.””

“Correct.””

Daniel stared.

“They needed the baby gone.””

Detective Morgan nodded.

“That appears to be one possibility.””

My phone suddenly rang.

I looked down.

Claire.

For a moment, I couldn’t breathe.

Detective Morgan gestured.

“Answer it.””

I pressed the button.

“Hello?””

Silence.

Then my sister’s voice.

“Rachel.””

I closed my eyes.

“What do you want?””

“I need to explain.””

I laughed softly.

“Explain why you kicked me?””

“I didn’t mean to hurt you.””

“You kicked a six-month pregnant woman.””

“I was angry.””

“Why?””

Silence.

Then she whispered.

“Because you took everything.””

My fingers tightened around the phone.

“I took nothing from you.””

“Yes, you did.””

Her voice cracked.

“You always got chosen.””

I looked toward Daniel.

“What are you talking about?””

“You got Grandpa’s attention. You got the good marriage. You got the trust.””

“That trust is for my daughter.””

“She doesn’t even exist yet!””

The words froze me.

Claire realized what she said.

She went quiet.

I whispered, “What did you mean by that?””

“No.””

“Claire.””

“I have to go.””

“Wait!””

The call ended.

Detective Morgan immediately stood.

“That was important.””

Daniel looked at her.

“She admitted something.””

“Yes.””

The detective’s phone rang.

She answered.

A few seconds later, her expression changed.

“Understood.””

She hung up.

“What happened?”” I asked.

“We found the person who supplied the medication.””

My heartbeat increased.

“Who?””

Detective Morgan looked directly at me.

“A pharmacist who works with your mother.””

The room went silent.

“My mother?””

“Yes.””

Daniel clenched his fists.

“Arrest her.””

“We need more evidence.””

Then Detective Morgan’s phone received a message.

She read it.

And her face changed.

“What?””

She turned the screen toward us.

It was a photograph.

A security camera image.

A person entering my house two days before the attack.

I recognized the jacket.

The hairstyle.

The face.

It was someone I trusted.

Someone who had hugged me and told me she loved me.

Someone who had brought me dinner.

Detective Morgan whispered:

“Rachel…”

I stared at the picture.

Because the person carrying the bag into my home was not my mother.

May you like

It was my husband’s mother.

My mother-in-law.
