Chapter 5: The Truth My Husband Hid
I didn’t sleep that night.
Not because of the poison.
Not because of my sister.
Not even because my own family wanted my baby gone.
I couldn’t sleep because the one person I trusted most was hiding something.
Daniel sat beside the hospital bed until sunrise.
Neither of us spoke.
Finally, I whispered:
“Tell me.””
He closed his eyes.
“I met your grandfather before you knew me.””
I stared.
“What?””
“He contacted me.””
“Why?””
Daniel looked ashamed.
“He knew people were after the trust.””
My heart pounded.
“You knew?””
“Not everything.””
“Then what did you know?””
He took a deep breath.
“Your grandfather suspected your father.””
I felt sick.
“My father?””
“Yes.””
Daniel explained that my grandfather had discovered financial problems.
My father had been secretly borrowing money.
Using family assets.
Waiting for access to the trust.
“He wanted someone outside the family to protect you,” Daniel said.
I shook my head.
“So you married me because of the trust?””
His face broke.
“No.””
“Then why?””
“Because I loved you.””
I wanted to believe him.
I needed to.
But too many secrets surrounded me.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
“Because your grandfather asked me not to.””
“Why?””
“Because he believed someone close to you was dangerous.””
A nurse entered the room before I could answer.
She looked nervous.
“Rachel?””
“Yes?””
“We found something else in your medical records.””
My blood turned cold.
“What?””
She handed me a file.
“The poisoning started earlier than the day of the attack.””
I looked at Daniel.
The nurse continued.
“You were exposed weeks ago.””
Weeks.
Before Claire kicked me.
Before the backyard.
Before the hospital.
Someone had been slowly poisoning me.
The kick was just a final attempt.
A cover.
Detective Morgan rushed into the room moments later.
“We have a problem.””
Daniel stood.
“What happened?””
She held up a folder.
“Your father disappeared.””
My heart stopped.
“What?””
“He left his house before we arrived.””
“Did he run?””
“Yes.””
Then she handed me another piece of paper.
A bank transfer.
The amount made me dizzy.
Millions.
Transferred from an account connected to the trust.
My father had already tried to steal the money.
But there was one more thing.
At the bottom of the document was a signature.
Not my father’s.
Not my mother’s.
Not Claire’s.
It belonged to Daniel.
I looked at my husband.
He went completely still.
“Rachel…”
My voice shook.
“What did you sign?””
He didn’t answer.
And in that moment, I realized the most terrifying possibility.
Maybe my family wasn’t the only one who betrayed me.
Maybe the man who promised to protect me had been part of the plan from the beginning.
Then Detective Morgan’s phone rang.
She answered.
Her face turned pale.
“Rachel…”
I looked at her.
“What?””
She slowly lowered the phone.
“We found your father.””
“Where?””
She hesitated.
“In the old Hayes family property.””
My heart raced.
“Is he alive?””
Detective Morgan looked at Daniel.
Then back at me.
“He is.””
A pause.
“But he wasn’t alone.””
I whispered:
“Who was with him?””
Detective Morgan opened the folder.
Inside was a photograph.
A photograph taken minutes earlier.
My father.
My mother-in-law.
And someone else standing beside them.
May you like
Someone who was supposed to be dead.
My grandfather.
