Chapter 6

Margaret made bail three days later.

The first thing she did was drive to our house.

She knew she was not allowed near me.

But she believed rules were for women without connections.

The police called before I knew she had arrived.

“Mrs. Hale, your mother-in-law was found attempting to enter your residence.”

My hands tightened around the phone.

“With what?”

“A spare key.”

I laughed once.

Sharp and empty.

“Of course.”

“She claims she needed medication from inside.”

“She doesn’t live there.”

“We’re aware.”

They arrested her for violating the protective order.

Again.

This time, the local news picked it up.

Retired Judge’s Wife Arrested After Infant Endangerment Charge.

Margaret’s church friends stopped calling me to say I should forgive.

Daniel called anyway.

I let it go to voicemail.

His voice sounded different now.

Less powerful.

More desperate.

“Amelia, please. Mom is falling apart. She can’t handle jail. You know she didn’t mean to hurt Lily.”

I deleted it.

Then another.

“You’re punishing the whole family.”

Delete.

Another.

“I miss my daughter.”

I did not delete that one.

I saved it for Mara.

The custody hearing was set for Friday.

Until then, I lived in Claire’s guest room and counted Lily’s breaths.

At night, when the house was quiet, I replayed every moment I had ignored.

Margaret insisting Lily cried too much.

Margaret saying I held her wrong.

Margaret whispering that Daniel should have married Vanessa.

Daniel laughing it off.

Daniel telling me not to be sensitive.

Daniel sleeping through nights while I fed Lily alone.

A marriage does not become unsafe in one night.

It becomes unsafe in tiny permissions.

One insult forgiven.

One boundary mocked.

One lie explained away.

One mother-in-law allowed to rule the house because “that’s just how she is.”

On Thursday, Robert called.

“Amelia, I found something else.”

My heart sank.

“What now?”

“A life insurance policy.”

I went still.

“On Lily?”

“No. On you.”

The room blurred.

“I don’t have life insurance.”

“You do. Daniel took it out after Lily was born.”

My mouth went dry.

“How much?”

“One million dollars.”

I sat down slowly.

“Who is the beneficiary?”

Robert’s voice cracked.

“Daniel.”

I could not speak.

He continued.

“There are emails between Margaret and Daniel. She pushed him to buy it. She said motherhood had made you fragile.”

Fragile.

That word again.

A pretty word people used when they wanted to break you and blame your softness.

Robert whispered, “I am sending everything to Mara.”

“Thank you.”

“Amelia?”

“Yes?”

“I should have protected you sooner.”

I stared at Lily sleeping beside me.

“Yes,” I said.

“You should have.”

He did not argue.

After I hung up, Claire sat beside me.

“A life insurance policy?”

I nodded.

She went pale.

“Do you think they would have—”

“I don’t know.”

But I did know one thing.

Margaret had not only wanted Lily gone.

She wanted me discredited.

May you like

Maybe destroyed.

And Daniel had been willing to stand close enough to benefit.
