Chapter 19

Margaret died in prison when Lily was six.
A heart attack.
No dramatic last words.
No apology.
No final confession.
Just a phone call from Mara and a strange silence afterward.
I waited for relief.
It did not come immediately.
Neither did grief.
What came was exhaustion.
The final thread had snapped.
Daniel called that evening.
“I heard,” he said.
“Yes.”
“I don’t know what I feel.”
“That makes sense.”
A pause.
Then he said, “I’m sorry she never apologized.”
I looked through the window at Lily chasing fireflies in the yard.
“I stopped needing it.”
He was quiet.
“I hope I can get there.”
“That’s your work.”
“I know.”
Before hanging up, he said, “Thank you for letting me be Lily’s father.”
I answered honestly.
“I didn’t do that for you.”
“I know.”
Good.
He had learned.
Lily asked why her father sounded sad at pickup the next day.
I told her his mother had died.
Lily thought for a moment.
“The grandma who hurt me?”
“Yes.”
She leaned against me.
“Are we safe?”
I smiled.
“Yes.”
“Then can we make pancakes?”
I laughed.
“Yes.”
So we did.
Blueberry pancakes for dinner.
Claire came over.
Robert too.
Daniel dropped off Lily’s favorite jacket and left quietly.
No one shouted.
No one blamed.
No one tried to turn death into theater.
That was how I knew the curse had ended.
May you like
Not with revenge.
With peace no one could interrupt.
