Chapter 4

Robert arrived at Claire’s house that evening with a manila envelope and eyes full of regret.

He stood on the porch like he was waiting to be judged.

Maybe he was.

I opened the door but did not invite him in.

Lily slept in a bassinet behind me.

Claire stood nearby.

Robert looked past us, saw his granddaughter, and covered his mouth.

“I failed her,” he whispered.

I wanted to hate him completely.

It would have been easier.

But grief had aged him overnight.

“You failed me first,” I said.

He nodded.

“Yes.”

That surprised me.

No defense.

No excuse.

Just yes.

He handed me the envelope.

“Inside is the recording. Also copies of Margaret’s prior medical evaluations.”

My stomach tightened.

“Medical evaluations?”

“She is not confused, Amelia.”

I knew that.

Still, hearing it felt like a door slamming.

Robert continued.

“She was evaluated last year after she accused a neighbor of poisoning her roses. The doctor found no dementia. No cognitive impairment. She understands her actions.”

Claire took the envelope.

“And you kept that from us?”

Robert lowered his eyes.

“I thought it was embarrassing.”

I almost laughed.

“Embarrassing.”

He flinched.

“My wife nearly killed my child, and you call the warning signs embarrassing?”

“I know.”

“No, you don’t.”

My voice shook.

“You lived with a cruel woman and called it difficult. Daniel learned from you. He watched her hurt people and learned silence was love.”

Robert’s eyes filled.

“You’re right.”

Again, no defense.

It made my anger stagger.

He looked toward Lily.

“I want to help.”

“Why now?”

“Because when Daniel asked me to protect Margaret, I realized I had raised a son who thinks family means shielding the guilty.”

That sentence stayed in the air.

Claire unfolded the papers.

Her face darkened.

“Amelia.”

I turned.

She handed me a copy of a handwritten note.

Margaret’s handwriting.

I recognized the sharp loops.

Daniel needs a clean start. Amelia is unstable. If something happens, the baby must stay with us.

My hands went numb.

“What is this?”

Robert said quietly, “I found it in her desk two weeks ago.”

“Two weeks ago?”

“I confronted her. She said she was venting.”

I stepped back.

“She planned this.”

“I fear so.”

Claire swore under her breath.

Robert removed a small drive from his pocket.

“This has Daniel’s threat. It also has footage from my home cameras. Margaret told him last month that you were becoming dangerous. She said he needed to document your exhaustion.”

I whispered, “She was building a case.”

“Yes.”

Lily stirred.

I rushed to her and lifted her into my arms.

Her tiny body warmed my chest.

I kissed her forehead again and again.

Robert’s voice broke.

“I will testify.”

I looked at him.

“You’ll testify against your wife?”

“Yes.”

“And your son?”

His eyes closed.

“If he chooses to protect her, yes.”

For the first time since the nightmare began, I felt something other than terror.

Not peace.

Not yet.

But a small, fierce spark.

Evidence.

Truth.

A witness from inside their own house.

Margaret had tried to throw away my baby.

Now her own secrets were coming back wrapped in paper.
