Chapter 5

Daniel came to Claire’s house the next morning.

He did not knock softly.

He pounded on the door until Lily startled awake and screamed.

That was his first mistake.

Claire grabbed her phone.

I picked up Lily and moved away from the windows.

“Amelia!” Daniel shouted.

“Open the door!”

Claire looked through the peephole.

“He’s not alone.”

My blood froze.

“Who is with him?”

“A woman. Blonde. Expensive coat. Lawyer face.”

I knew before she said the name.

Vanessa Pike.

Daniel’s ex-girlfriend.

A family attorney who had hated me since the engagement party, when Margaret introduced me as “the temporary girl.”

Daniel shouted again.

“I know you’re in there!”

Claire opened the door with the chain still locked.

“Lower your voice.”

Daniel tried to push forward.

The chain caught.

Vanessa stepped beside him.

“Mrs. Hale, withholding a child from her father can be viewed unfavorably by the court.”

I came into view with Lily in my arms.

Vanessa’s eyes flicked to the baby.

No tenderness.

Only calculation.

I said, “His mother put my baby in a trash can.”

Vanessa smiled thinly.

“Allegedly.”

Something inside me went cold.

Daniel looked away.

That hurt more than I wanted it to.

“You brought her here to threaten me?”

“I came to see my daughter,” he said.

“Then why did you bring a weapon?”

Vanessa’s smile vanished.

“I beg your pardon?”

I looked at Daniel.

“You’re not here as a father. You’re here as Margaret’s son.”

Daniel’s jaw tightened.

“My mother made a terrible mistake.”

“No. She committed a crime.”

“She panicked.”

“She lied about a kidnapping.”

Vanessa cut in.

“Your history of postpartum exhaustion will be relevant.”

Claire opened the door as far as the chain allowed.

“Say one more word like that and I’ll make sure the recording of this conversation joins the others.”

Vanessa’s eyes sharpened.

“What recordings?”

I almost smiled.

Daniel looked at me too quickly.

There it was.

Fear.

He knew Robert had recorded him.

Or suspected it.

I stepped closer.

“Your father gave me everything.”

Daniel’s face fell.

“He wouldn’t.”

“He did.”

For a moment, my husband looked like a boy caught stealing.

Then anger replaced shame.

“You turned him against us.”

“No,” I said.

“You asked him to help bury the truth.”

Vanessa grabbed Daniel’s arm.

“We’re leaving.”

Daniel pointed at me.

“This is not over.”

I held Lily tighter.

“It is for today.”

Claire shut the door.

My knees buckled.

She caught my elbow.

“You did good.”

“I’m shaking.”

“You can shake and still win.”

By afternoon, Mara Ellis, my attorney, had filed for an emergency protective order for Lily and me.

By evening, a judge granted temporary restrictions.

Margaret could not come near us.

Daniel’s visits would be supervised until the custody hearing.

Vanessa filed a response claiming I was unstable.

Then Robert’s recording reached the court.

Daniel’s voice played in a legal transcript.

If Amelia keeps Lily from me, I’ll say she fell asleep and caused all of this.

Those words became a blade.

Only this time, the blade was not pointed at me.
