Chapter 17

Margaret sent Lily a birthday card when Lily turned three.
It never reached her.
Mara received it first because prison mail was monitored.
Inside, Margaret had written:
Grandma loves you. One day you will know your mother lied.
My hands did not shake when I read it.
That was how I knew I had healed more than I realized.
I handed it back.
“She gets nothing.”
Mara nodded.
“Agreed.”
We filed to block all future contact.
Granted.
Daniel supported it.
That mattered.
Not enough to erase the past.
Enough to mark the present.
He messaged me afterward.
I told the court Lily should never receive anything from her.
Thank you, I wrote.
Two words.
No warmth.
No cruelty.
Just truth.
Robert attended Lily’s birthday party.
Daniel came for one hour with approval.
It was strange.
But not explosive.
He brought a wooden puzzle.
Lily hugged his leg.
Then ran back to me.
Daniel watched with wet eyes but did not make it about himself.
Progress can look like silence.
After the party, Robert stayed to help clean.
He picked up wrapping paper and paused near me.
“I never thought I’d see Daniel become better than I was.”
I looked at him.
“You became better too.”
He shook his head.
“Late.”
“Yes,” I said.
“But not never.”
He cried quietly.
This time, I hugged him.
May you like
Not as forgiveness for everything.
As recognition for what he had chosen after.
