Chapter 4

Maria finally told us the truth.

Not all at once.

Fear does not leave easily.

It comes out in pieces.

Margaret had been threatening her for weeks.

“If you tell Claire what I say, I’ll have you deported.”

“If Leo cries, I’ll say you shook him.”

“If anything happens in this house, they’ll believe me before they believe you.”

Maria had saved every message.

Every note.

Every voice memo.

She had been too afraid to use them.

Until Leo almost fell.

Claire held her hand while she showed us the folder on her phone.

My chest tightened with every file.

Margaret ordering Maria to skip meals.

Margaret calling her “hired blood.”

Margaret saying, “Women like you know how to look innocent.”

Then one recording made Claire go still.

Margaret’s voice.

“If I get rid of you, I can finally bring in someone loyal. Someone who understands I am Leo’s real protector.”

Claire whispered, “Real protector?”

I remembered Margaret’s obsession.

She corrected how Claire held Leo.

How she fed him.

How often she let him nap.

She told friends, “My poor grandson would be lost without me.”

She called him “my baby” too often.

I used to think it was grandmotherly love.

Now it sounded like ownership.

Our attorney, Dana Price, arrived that afternoon.

She reviewed everything.

Then she looked at me.

“Your mother may claim mental confusion.”

“She wasn’t confused.”

“No. But people with money often buy softer words.”

Claire lifted her head.

“Then we make sure the hard words are documented.”

Dana nodded.

“Exactly.”

We filed for a protective order.

Against Margaret.

For Leo.

For Maria.

For Claire.

The hearing was scheduled for the next morning.

Denise came to the house that evening.

She was furious when she arrived.

Then I showed her the video.

She sat down halfway through.

By the end, she was crying.

“She watched him crawl,” Denise whispered.

“Yes.”

She covered her face.

“I left my daughter with her last month.”

Claire and I stared at her.

“What?”

Denise looked sick.

“Mom said Ava fell off the sofa. She had a bruise.”

The room went silent.

Dana leaned forward.

“Tell me everything.”
