Chapter 12

When Leo was eight, he saw the footage.

Not by accident.

By choice.

A therapist helped us decide when.

He had begun having nightmares about stairs after hearing a cousin mention “the incident.”

Secrets grow teeth when half-told.

So we showed him the edited clip.

No repeated viewing.

No sound.

Just enough.

Margaret placing the toy.

Maria running.

Maria saving him.

Leo sat very still.

Ava sat beside him, holding his hand.

When the clip ended, he whispered, “She waited.”

I closed my eyes.

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Claire answered.

“Because she wanted to blame Maria.”

Leo looked at Maria, who had come because he asked her to.

“You got in trouble for saving me?”

Maria smiled sadly.

“For about ten seconds.”

He stood and walked into her arms.

She hugged him tightly.

“I’m glad you ran,” he whispered.

“Me too,” she said.

Afterward, Leo avoided the staircase for two weeks.

Then one day, he walked up alone.

Slowly.

Holding the rail.

I stood at the bottom.

Not rushing.

Not warning.

Just watching.

At the top, he turned.

“I’m okay.”

I nodded.

“Yes, you are.”

That night, he placed his blue elephant on his shelf.

Not near the stairs.

May you like

In his room.

Where safe things belonged.
