Chapter 18

Years passed.

Clear View helped thousands.

Leo became a lawyer.

Ava became a child therapist.

Maria became head of pediatric emergency nursing.

Claire became impossible to intimidate.

Denise became the aunt who apologized when wrong and meant it.

I became quieter.

Less certain.

Better.

One afternoon, Leo invited me to court.

His first major case.

A nanny accused of negligence after saving a child from a pool while the grandmother had walked away.

The pattern made my chest tighten.

Leo stood before the judge with calm fury.

“My client did not endanger this child,” he said. “She interrupted danger created by someone with more power.”

I looked at Maria beside me.

Her eyes filled.

The nanny won.

Outside court, Leo hugged Maria first.

Then me.

I did not mind.

Some debts are sacred.
