Chapter 17

Leo left for college at eighteen.
He chose social policy and child welfare.
Of course he did.
Claire cried for three days.
I pretended I was fine until I found one of his baby socks in a drawer and had to sit down.
Maria came over with soup.
“He is not disappearing,” she said.
“I know.”
“You look like you don’t.”
I laughed weakly.
The night before he left, Leo stood at the top of the staircase.
The same staircase.
Now carpeted.
Gated no longer.
Just stairs.
“I used to be scared of this spot,” he said.
I stood beside him.
“Me too.”
He looked at me.
“You?”
“Yes.”
“Because of me?”
“Because I almost lost you.”
He slipped his arm around me.
“You didn’t.”
No.
I didn’t.
Because Maria ran.
May you like
Because the camera recorded.
Because we finally chose truth.
