Chapter 19

On the twentieth anniversary of the staircase, we held no ceremony.

Leo insisted.

“No trauma anniversary party.”

Fair.

Instead, we had dinner.

Family only.

Claire.

Me.

Leo.

Maria.

Aaron.

Denise.

Ava.

Elena.

Kids running through the house.

Laughter.

Garlic bread burning.

Someone spilled juice near the stairs.

Nobody panicked.

That was how I knew we had healed.

Not because memory vanished.

Because life became larger than it.

After dinner, Leo stood under the hallway camera.

It had been replaced three times.

Still, a camera remained.

He looked up.

“Thank you,” he said.

Maria laughed.

“To the camera?”

“To evidence.”

Ava raised her glass.

“To evidence.”

We all did.

Then Leo turned to Maria.

“And to people who run.”

May you like

Maria wiped her eyes.

“Enough. Eat cake.”
