Chapter 2

Claire made a sound I had never heard from her before.

Not a cry.

Not a scream.

Something deeper.

She took Leo from my arms and backed away from Margaret like my mother had become a stranger wearing a familiar face.

“Claire,” Margaret whispered. “It isn’t what it looks like.”

My wife stared at the frozen image on the screen.

Leo reaching.

Maria running.

Margaret watching.

“It looks like you tried to hurt my son.”

“No,” Margaret said quickly. “I was testing Maria.”

I turned slowly.

“Testing her?”

“She’s careless,” Margaret snapped. “I needed proof.”

Maria laughed once.

It was quiet.

Broken.

“You used a baby as bait.”

Margaret glared at her.

“You stay out of this.”

“No,” I said.

My voice came out colder than I expected.

“You don’t speak to her again.”

Margaret’s eyes widened.

I had never spoken to her that way.

That was part of the problem.

My whole life, Margaret had ruled rooms by making everyone afraid of being ungrateful.

She cried when challenged.

She punished with silence.

She called cruelty concern.

And I had translated for her.

She means well.

She’s protective.

She worries too much.

But there was no translating this.

My son could have died.

Claire clutched Leo against her chest.

“He was at the stairs,” she whispered. “You saw him.”

Margaret’s face hardened.

“He was never going to fall.”

“You don’t know that,” I said.

“I know children.”

“You know control.”

The words shocked both of us.

Margaret’s eyes filled with fury.

“After everything I’ve done for this family?”

Claire looked at her.

“What have you done? Besides criticize Maria, criticize me, and treat this house like it belongs to you?”

Margaret stepped toward Claire.

I moved between them.

“Stop.”

She looked at me like I had betrayed her.

“You’re choosing the maid over your mother?”

I pointed at the screen.

“I’m choosing the woman who saved my child over the woman who endangered him.”

Maria’s eyes filled.

She looked away.

Security footage was copied immediately.

I called our attorney.

Then the police.

Margaret screamed when she realized I was serious.

“You would report your own mother?”

“Yes.”

Her face collapsed.

But this time, I did not rescue her from consequences.

Police arrived within twenty minutes.

Maria gave her statement.

Claire gave hers.

I gave mine.

Margaret claimed confusion.

She said she had tripped.

She said the toy fell.

Then the officer watched the footage.

His expression changed.

“Mrs. Whitman,” he said, “please step outside with me.”

Margaret looked at me one last time.

“You’ll regret this.”

I looked down at Leo.

May you like

He was asleep in Claire’s arms, one fist wrapped around her necklace.

“No,” I said. “I regret waiting this long.”
