Chapter 8: The Account My Father Hid

The words hung in the air.

*“Mark found the account.””*

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

It felt like the entire room had frozen around those four words.

My uncle.

The man who taught me how to ride a bike.

The man who called my daughters “his little princesses.””

The man who hugged me at my father’s funeral.

He had spent years searching for something my father hid.

And now he had found it.

I looked at Ethan.

“How?””

Ethan ended the call slowly.

His face was pale.

“He accessed old records.””

“What records?””

“The company archives.””

I shook my head.

“That’s impossible. The company has been closed for years.””

Ethan looked at Claire.

“Not everything disappeared.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“What does that mean?””

Claire answered quietly.

“Your father created backups.””

“Where?””

She hesitated.

Then:

“Online.””

I stared.

“My father barely knew how to use email.””

Ethan nodded.

“That’s why he needed help.””

I looked at him.

“You?””

“Yes.””

My mind raced.

Fifteen years of secrets.

Fifteen years of people knowing things I didn’t.

I looked at Claire.

“And you knew about this account?””

She nodded.

“I knew it existed.””

“Did you know what was inside?””

“No.””

“Then how did you know about it?””

She looked down.

“Your father told me.””

I felt my anger rise again.

“My father told you secrets he didn’t tell me?””

Claire closed her eyes.

“He was trying to protect you.””

“Everyone keeps saying that.””

I slammed my hand against the table.

“Everyone keeps protecting me from the truth, and somehow I’m the only person who ends up destroyed by it.””

Nobody spoke.

Because nobody could argue.

Maya looked at me.

“Dad…”

I turned toward her.

Her eyes were filled with tears.

“I don’t care about the money anymore.””

I looked at her.

“I just want us to stop finding out things from strangers.””

That sentence hurt.

Because she was right.

My daughter had discovered her college fund was gone by accident.

She discovered family secrets by watching adults whisper.

She had spent the entire day learning that the people who were supposed to protect her had been hiding things.

I walked over and held her hand.

“I’m sorry.””

She shook her head.

“You didn’t do this.””

But I wondered if I had.

I had been there.

For fifteen years.

Living comfortably inside a story that wasn’t real.

Believing everything was fine because nobody forced me to look closer.

Ethan cleared his throat.

“We don’t have much time.””

I turned.

“Why?””

“Because if Mark found the account, he knows what it contains.””

“What does it contain?””

Ethan looked at Claire.

“Proof.””

“Proof of what?””

“That he destroyed your father’s company.””

I waited.

“And?””

Ethan hesitated.

Then said:

“Proof that he was involved in your father’s death.””

The room went silent.

Brooke covered her mouth.

Maya grabbed the edge of the chair.

I felt like I had been hit.

“You’re accusing my uncle of murder?””

Ethan shook his head.

“No.””

“Then what are you saying?””

“I’m saying your father’s accident may not have been an accident.””

The words were too heavy.

Too impossible.

My father.

The man who taught me everything.

The man whose voice I still heard when I made difficult decisions.

Gone because someone wanted him gone?

“No.””

I backed away.

“No, I can’t believe that.””

Claire stood.

“Daniel.””

“No.””

I looked at her.

“You knew?””

She started crying.

“I suspected.””

My voice became quiet.

“You suspected my father was killed?””

“Yes.””

“And you stayed?””

Her face broke.

“I was scared.””

“Of who?””

She didn’t answer.

I already knew.

Mark.

The same person who had stolen from us.

The same person who had manipulated her.

The same person who had sat at my father’s funeral pretending to grieve.

My phone suddenly rang.

Everyone looked at me.

The screen showed an unknown number.

I almost ignored it.

Then Ethan said:

“Answer it.””

I looked at him.

“How do you know?””

“Because Mark always calls before he threatens.””

The room went cold.

I answered.

“Hello?””

For several seconds, there was only silence.

Then a familiar voice spoke.

“Daniel.””

My entire body stiffened.

“Uncle Mark.””

Nobody moved.

I turned away from the table.

“What do you want?””

A quiet laugh came through the phone.

“Still direct. Your father would have liked that.””

My hand tightened around the phone.

“Don’t talk about my father.””

“Why? Because you finally know what happened?””

My heart started racing.

“You killed him.””

Another pause.

Then:

“Careful.””

The calmness in his voice terrified me.

“You have no idea what you’re talking about.””

“I know enough.””

“No, Daniel.””

His voice became softer.

“You know what people have told you.””

I looked at Ethan.

Then Claire.

“Where are you?””

He laughed.

“You think this is a movie? You think I’m going to confess because you ask the right questions?””

“Why did you steal from my father?””

“I didn’t.””

“You stole from the company.””

“I saved it.””

My jaw tightened.

“By destroying him?””

“You don’t understand what your father was like.””

The anger inside me burned.

“Don’t.””

“What?””

“Don’t pretend you knew him better than me.””

Mark sighed.

“Your father was stubborn.””

I said nothing.

“He cared more about pride than his family.””

“That’s a lie.””

“Is it?””

His voice changed.

“Ask Claire.””

I looked at my wife.

Mark continued.

“Ask her how many times your father refused help.””

Claire’s face went pale.

“How do you know Claire is here?””

Silence.

Then:

“Because I know everything.””

A chill moved through me.

“You’re watching us?””

“No.””

Another pause.

“I’m warning you.””

“About what?””

“Stop digging.””

I laughed.

“You expect me to stop?””

“I expect you to think about your daughters.””

My blood turned cold.

“What does that mean?””

“It means some truths are expensive.””

The call went silent.

“Mark?””

No answer.

I pulled the phone away.

He had hung up.

Nobody spoke.

Then Maya whispered:

“He threatened us.””

I looked at her.

“Yes.””

Brooke started crying.

Claire immediately moved toward her.

But Brooke stepped back.

“Don’t.””

The word hurt Claire.

“I’m scared.””

“I know.””

“No, Mom.””

Brooke shook her head.

“I don’t know who to trust anymore.””

Claire froze.

And I saw the pain in her eyes.

Because that was the consequence of secrets.

Not just losing money.

Not just losing trust.

Losing the feeling of safety.

Ethan opened the folder again.

“There’s something else.””

I looked at him.

“What now?””

He pulled out a small key.

A simple metal key.

Old.

Worn.

Attached to a tag.

The tag had two words written on it.

*Lake House.*

My heart stopped.

“The account is there?””

Ethan nodded.

“Your father hid the access information inside the lake house.””

I looked at Claire.

“You knew?””

She nodded.

“I was supposed to get it after you found out.””

“After I found out what?””

She looked away.

“After you learned the truth.””

I stared at the key.

My father had planned this.

A message.

A warning.

A hidden account.

Everything led back to that house.

The house where my childhood memories lived.

The house where my father had hidden the truth.

My phone buzzed.

A text message appeared.

Unknown number.

I opened it.

One sentence.

One picture.

The picture showed the lake house.

May you like

And the message said:

*“You’re too late. I’m already inside.””*
