Chapter 7: The Person Who Stole From Us

The name on the document blurred.

I stared at it.

Then I blinked.

Then I looked again.

Because my brain refused to accept what my eyes were seeing.

*Mark Carter.*

My uncle.

My father’s younger brother.

The man who taught me how to throw a baseball.

The man who gave the toast at my wedding.

The man who held Maya the day she was born.

The man who sat beside me at my father’s funeral and told me, “We’re all you have left now.””

My hands went numb.

“No.””

Ethan watched me carefully.

“I know.””

I looked up.

“You’re saying my uncle stole from my father?””

Ethan didn’t answer immediately.

That hesitation made my stomach turn.

“You’re not sure.””

“I’m sure of what I saw.””

“What does that mean?””

Ethan pointed toward the report.

“Your father was tracking missing money from the company. At first, he thought it was a mistake. Accounting errors. Bad records.””

I looked back at the paper.

“But?””

“But the transfers kept happening.””

Claire spoke quietly.

“Mark knew the company better than anyone.””

I turned toward her.

“You knew?””

She looked down.

“I suspected.””

My anger returned.

“You suspected?””

Her eyes filled.

“I didn’t know the whole story.””

“But you knew something.””

She nodded.

“Yes.””

I stood there, feeling like every person in the room had been handed a map to my life while I was the only one lost.

“My father died thinking his company failed.””

Ethan nodded.

“He died believing he made mistakes.””

My jaw tightened.

“And he didn’t?””

“No.””

The word was simple.

But it carried years of pain.

“He was betrayed.””

I looked at Claire.

“And you helped hide it.””

She flinched.

“I was trying to protect you.””

“Everyone keeps saying that.””

My voice broke.

“Protect me from what?””

Nobody answered.

I walked away from the table.

I couldn’t sit.

I couldn’t breathe.

The kitchen walls felt too close.

All those years.

All those memories.

My uncle coming over every Sunday.

His jokes.

His advice.

The way he acted like he was my father’s closest friend.

I remembered him standing beside me after the funeral.

I remembered him putting his hand on my shoulder.

“You’re going to be okay, Danny.””

I believed him.

I believed the person who helped destroy us.

Maya quietly spoke.

“Dad?””

I turned.

She looked scared.

Not because of the money anymore.

Because she was watching me lose pieces of my past.

“Are we okay?””

That question destroyed me.

Because she wasn’t asking about the family.

She was asking if she still had a father who could hold everything together.

I walked over and hugged her.

“We’re okay.””

But even as I said it, I wondered if I was lying.

Because I had spent years believing I knew my family.

Now I wasn’t sure I knew anyone.

Brooke wiped her eyes.

“So… Mom didn’t steal the money?””

Everyone looked at Claire.

She swallowed.

“I made mistakes.””

“That’s not what I asked.””

Brooke’s voice was sharper than usual.

“Did you steal Maya’s money?””

Claire looked at her daughter.

“No.””

“Then where did it go?””

Claire looked at Ethan.

He answered.

“Someone used Claire’s account to move money.””

I frowned.

“What?””

Ethan nodded.

“Years ago, your father created safeguards around the company finances. He knew something was wrong.””

“So?””

“So he created a private account only three people knew existed.””

I looked at Claire.

“My father.””

“Yes.””

“Me?””

“No.””

The answer surprised me.

“Then who?””

Ethan looked uncomfortable.

“Claire.””

My wife nodded slowly.

“And Mark.””

The room went silent.

I understood.

My uncle.

My wife.

The two people my father trusted.

“What did Mark do?””

Claire sat down.

Finally.

After hours of hiding.

She looked exhausted.

“He convinced me he was helping.””

“With what?””

“With the company.””

She rubbed her hands together.

“He told me your father was too proud to admit he was losing control. He said if we moved money temporarily, we could fix everything before you found out.””

I stared at her.

“You believed him?””

“I was young.””

“You were thirty.””

“I was scared.””

I wanted to argue.

But I stopped.

Because I remembered that time.

I remembered my father struggling.

I remembered bills piling up.

I remembered Claire crying at night when she thought I was asleep.

Fear could make people do terrible things.

But fear didn’t erase consequences.

“So you helped him.””

Claire nodded.

“Yes.””

“How much?””

She looked away.

“I don’t know.””

That answer made me angry.

“You don’t know?””

“I stopped counting.””

The room went quiet.

Ethan stepped forward.

“Mark used multiple accounts. Claire thought she was moving money to save the company.””

“But?””

“But Mark was moving it somewhere else.””

I looked at the report.

“And nobody caught him?””

Ethan shook his head.

“Your father did.””

“What happened?””

Ethan’s expression changed.

“He confronted Mark.””

My heart slowed.

“When?””

“Two days before the accident.””

The room became silent.

I looked at Ethan.

“Accident?””

Nobody spoke.

I felt cold.

“What accident?””

Claire’s eyes filled with tears.

“Daniel…”

“No.””

I stepped closer.

“What accident?””

Ethan looked at me.

“The one that killed your father.””

The words hit me harder than anything else.

I felt the room disappear.

My father’s death.

The thing I had mourned for fifteen years.

The thing I thought was just a tragic accident.

“You think Mark killed him?””

Ethan didn’t answer.

That scared me.

“I didn’t ask what you think.””

Ethan lowered his voice.

“I think your father knew he was in danger.””

I looked at Claire.

“And you?””

She started crying.

“I should have told you.””

“Yes.””

“I was scared.””

“Yes.””

“I thought if I stayed quiet, I could protect you and the girls.””

I shook my head.

“You protected the wrong person.””

She closed her eyes.

“I know.””

For the first time all day, I believed her.

Not because I forgave her.

Because I could see she had been carrying this weight for years.

But that didn’t answer the most important question.

“If Mark stole from the company…”

I looked at Maya.

“Why did her college fund disappear?””

Ethan answered.

“Because Mark found out your father left evidence.””

My stomach dropped.

“What evidence?””

“Your father hid records proving what Mark did.””

“Where?””

Ethan looked at the folder.

“In the trust.””

I frowned.

“What trust?””

“The same trust that protected the lake house.””

I understood.

The lake house.

The one I thought was just a childhood memory.

It wasn’t.

It was a vault.

My father had hidden something there.

“Where are the records now?””

Nobody spoke.

Then Claire whispered:

“They’re gone.””

I looked at her.

“What?””

“Someone broke into the lake house three years ago.””

My chest tightened.

“Three years ago?””

She nodded.

“That’s when I contacted Robert.””

“And the money?””

Her eyes filled.

“I needed to find the records before Mark did.””

I stared.

“You took Maya’s college money because you were searching for evidence?””

Claire looked devastated.

“I thought I could fix everything.””

I almost believed her.

Almost.

Then Ethan spoke.

“She wasn’t only searching for evidence.””

I turned.

“What do you mean?””

Ethan looked at Claire.

And the guilt on her face returned.

“Daniel…”

My voice became cold.

“What else?””

Claire whispered:

“There’s one more thing your father left behind.””

I waited.

“A second account.””

I frowned.

“What second account?””

Her eyes moved toward Maya.

And my blood went cold.

“An account created for Maya.””

I stared.

“My daughter?””

Claire nodded.

“And it contains the evidence your father was protecting.””

I looked at Ethan.

“Where is it?””

He slowly reached into the folder.

But before he pulled anything out, his phone rang.

He looked at the screen.

The color disappeared from his face.

“What?””

I watched him answer.

A few seconds passed.

Then his expression changed.

“What do you mean he knows?””

Everyone froze.

Ethan looked directly at me.

May you like

Then he whispered the words that made my blood turn cold.

“Mark found the account.””
