Chapter 14: The Daughter Who Came Back
I stared at the message on my phone.
My hands went cold.
*“Stop looking for me, Dad.””*
Four words.
But they changed everything.
Because there was only one person who could have written them.
Lily.
The daughter Claire had lost.
The daughter my family never knew existed.
The daughter who somehow knew I was searching for her.
I looked up slowly.
Everyone was watching me.
Claire saw my expression.
“What happened?””
I didn’t answer immediately.
I turned the phone around.
She read the message.
And all the color drained from her face.
“No.””
Her voice was barely a whisper.
“No, she wouldn’t.””
Maya looked confused.
“Mom?””
Claire covered her mouth.
“It’s Lily.””
The room became silent.
Brooke looked between us.
“Who is Lily?””
Nobody answered.
Because suddenly, saying her name made everything real.
A missing daughter.
A hidden sister.
A person who had been carrying a secret nobody should have carried alone.
I looked at Claire.
“She knows.””
Claire shook her head.
“She can’t.””
“She just contacted me.””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“After all these years…”
Maya stood.
“Dad.””
I looked at her.
“What?””
She hesitated.
“Are you going to find her?””
I didn’t know how to answer.
Because the truth was, I didn’t know what I was feeling.
Anger.
Confusion.
Sadness.
But underneath all of it was something else.
A responsibility.
Lily had spent seventeen years without her mother.
Without her family.
Without knowing the truth.
I couldn’t ignore that.
“Yes.””
Claire looked at me.
“Daniel.””
I turned.
“I’m going to find her.””
She looked terrified.
Not because she didn’t want Lily found.
Because she was afraid of what Lily would say.
“What if she hates me?””
The question surprised me.
Because for the first time all day, Claire wasn’t worried about herself.
She was worried about the damage she caused.
“I don’t know.””
She nodded slowly.
“I deserve that.””
Nobody spoke.
Then Ethan stepped forward.
“There’s something you need to know.””
I looked at him.
“What now?””
He looked uncomfortable.
“Lily wasn’t just hidden.””
“What does that mean?””
“She was protected.””
“By who?””
He looked at Mark.
My stomach tightened.
“Mark?””
Ethan nodded.
“But not in the way you think.””
Mark laughed bitterly.
“You have no idea what you’re talking about.””
Ethan ignored him.
“After Andrew died, Lily became a target.””
Claire’s face changed.
“Target?””
“Yes.””
“From who?””
Ethan looked at the papers.
“From the same people who wanted your father silent.””
I felt the familiar anger returning.
More secrets.
More danger.
“Who?””
Nobody answered.
Mark finally spoke.
“You’re asking the wrong question.””
I looked at him.
“Then what’s the right one?””
“Why did your father trust Lily?””
I frowned.
“What?””
Mark’s expression was serious.
“Your father didn’t just create an account for Maya.””
He looked at the folder.
“He created a trail.””
“A trail to what?””
“The person who started all of this.””
I looked at the documents.
“The person who stole the money?””
“No.””
“The person who killed my father?””
Mark didn’t answer.
That was answer enough.
I stepped closer.
“Tell me.””
Mark looked away.
For the first time, he looked tired.
Not powerful.
Not confident.
Just tired.
“Your father discovered someone inside the family was feeding information to outsiders.””
I froze.
“Someone inside?””
“Yes.””
“Who?””
Mark looked at Claire.
Then at Ethan.
Then at me.
“That’s what Lily knows.””
My phone buzzed again.
Everyone looked.
Another message.
This time, an address.
And a sentence.
*“Come alone if you want the truth.””*
I stared.
Claire immediately shook her head.
“No.””
I looked at her.
“You know where this is?””
Her face changed.
“Yes.””
“Where?””
She swallowed.
“The old church.””
I frowned.
“What church?””
“The one near the lake.””
My heart stopped.
The church where my father’s funeral was held.
The church where Mark gave the speech about family.
The church where Claire cried beside me.
The church where everyone pretended nothing was wrong.
“I’m going.””
“No.””
Claire grabbed my arm.
“Daniel, please.””
I looked at her hand.
Then at her.
“I need to know.””
“She wants you alone.””
“I know.””
“That could be dangerous.””
I gave a tired smile.
“Dangerous stopped being a surprise today.””
Maya stood.
“I’m coming.””
“No.””
“Dad.””
“No.””
She looked angry.
“I’m not a child.””
“I know.””
“Then stop treating me like one.””
I paused.
Because she sounded exactly like me.
Stubborn.
Determined.
Wanting answers.
I looked at Claire.
Then Ethan.
Then my daughters.
“I’ll go alone.””
Nobody liked it.
But nobody argued.
The drive to the church felt unreal.
The same roads.
The same town.
The same places I had driven past thousands of times.
But everything looked different.
Because once you know a secret exists, the world changes.
The church sat at the edge of the lake.
Old.
Quiet.
Empty.
I parked outside.
For a moment, I didn’t move.
I thought about turning around.
Not because I was afraid.
Because I wondered if some truths were impossible to recover from.
Then I opened the door.
Inside, the church was dark.
The wooden benches were exactly how I remembered them.
I walked toward the front.
“Hello?””
My voice echoed.
No answer.
Then I heard footsteps.
Behind me.
I turned.
A woman stood near the entrance.
She looked younger than I expected.
Maybe because I expected someone broken.
Someone angry.
Instead, I saw someone calm.
Someone who looked like she had spent years preparing for this moment.
She had Claire’s eyes.
My heart stopped.
“You’re Daniel.””
It wasn’t a question.
I nodded.
“Yes.””
She looked at me.
“I wondered what you would look like.””
I couldn’t speak.
She stepped closer.
“My name is Lily.””
The words hit me.
I had spent years with two daughters.
Now I was standing in front of another.
My daughter.
“I’m sorry.””
The words came out before I could stop them.
Her expression changed slightly.
“For what?””
I swallowed.
“For everything.””
She looked away.
“That’s an interesting answer.””
“What do you mean?””
“Because you don’t know what happened.””
I didn’t respond.
She walked toward the front pew.
“My mother told you?””
“Some things.””
She smiled sadly.
“That sounds like her.””
I sat across from her.
“Why did you tell me to stop looking for you?””
She looked down.
“Because I didn’t want to become another secret that destroyed your family.””
I felt pain in my chest.
“You’re not a secret.””
She looked at me.
“That’s easy for you to say.””
The words hurt.
But I deserved them.
“I should have known.””
“Yes.””
The honesty surprised me.
She continued.
“Your father knew.””
I froze.
“My father?””
“He found me years ago.””
I stared.
“What?””
Lily nodded.
“He knew where I was.””
“Why didn’t he tell me?””
Her eyes filled.
“Because he was trying to protect me.””
I closed my eyes.
Another protection.
Another secret.
“When did he find you?””
“Before he died.””
The room went silent.
“What did he tell you?””
She looked at me.
“He told me Mark wasn’t the only person who betrayed him.””
My heart stopped.
“Who was?””
She reached into her bag.
Pulled out an envelope.
And placed it on the bench between us.
“My father gave me this.””
I looked at the handwriting.
I recognized it.
My father.
Again.
But this time, the envelope had my name on it.
“Why didn’t you give this to me sooner?””
She looked at me.
“Because I was waiting for you to find the truth yourself.””
I stared.
“Why?””
Her voice softened.
“Because my father told me something.””
“What?””
She looked directly into my eyes.
“He said if Daniel Carter ever finds this letter, it means he finally knows who really betrayed him.””
My hands shook as I opened the envelope.
Inside was one page.
One final message.
The first line made my heart stop.
*“Daniel, I’m sorry. The person who betrayed us was never outside the family.””*
I read the next sentence.
May you like
And everything changed.
*“The person who destroyed our family was the person I asked to protect it.””*
