Chapter 4: The Letter My Father Left Behind
I read the sentence three times.
My eyes moved over the words again and again, but my mind refused to accept them.
*“If anything happens to me, my son needs to know the truth about Claire.””*
My father’s handwriting.
My father’s signature.
A warning written before he died.
I looked up slowly.
Everyone was watching me.
Claire looked like she had seen a ghost.
Ethan looked like he had been waiting fifteen years for this exact moment.
And my daughters…
My daughters were standing there, watching their parents’ marriage break apart in front of them.
I folded the paper slightly.
Not because I wanted to hide it.
Because my hands were shaking too much.
“Where did you get this?””
My voice sounded unfamiliar.
Ethan answered quietly.
“Your father gave it to me.””
The backyard went completely silent.
“No.””
The word escaped before I could stop it.
“My father hated you.””
Ethan nodded.
“I know.””
“He never trusted you.””
“I know.””
“Then why would he give you anything?””
Ethan looked down.
“Because he realized too late that he trusted the wrong person.””
My eyes moved toward Claire.
She immediately shook her head.
“Don’t.””
That single word carried years of fear.
Not anger.
Fear.
“Claire.””
She looked at me.
“Please don’t do this here.””
I laughed softly.
Not because anything was funny.
Because I couldn’t believe she still cared about appearances.
“Where should we do it?””
She didn’t answer.
“Where should I ask why my father left me a note warning me about my wife?””
Her face crumpled slightly.
Maya covered her mouth.
Brooke looked between us, completely lost.
“Mom?””
Claire looked at our daughters.
And for a second, I saw regret.
Real regret.
But it disappeared quickly.
“I never wanted them involved.””
I stared at her.
“They’re involved because you made them involved.””
Maya looked at me.
“Dad…”
I softened immediately.
Not because Claire deserved it.
Because my daughter did.
I walked toward Maya and lowered my voice.
“I’m sorry you had to hear this.””
She shook her head.
“I just want the truth.””
Those words broke something in me.
Because that was all I wanted too.
The truth.
No more excuses.
No more missing pieces.
No more pretending everything was fine.
I turned back to Ethan.
“Tell me what happened.””
Claire stepped forward.
“No.””
I looked at her.
“No?””
She wiped her eyes.
“You don’t understand what you’re asking.””
“I’m asking what happened to my father.””
Her face changed.
Because she knew exactly what I meant.
Ethan looked at the document in my hand.
“Your father discovered financial records before his company collapsed.””
I frowned.
“What records?””
“Transfers.””
“From where?””
Ethan hesitated.
Then looked directly at Claire.
“From accounts connected to Claire.””
My stomach tightened.
“That’s impossible.””
Claire whispered.
“I can explain.””
I turned toward her.
“Then explain.””
She said nothing.
That silence was becoming unbearable.
“Claire.””
She looked down.
“Fifteen years ago, things were complicated.””
I stared at her.
“That’s your explanation?””
“No.””
“Because it sounds exactly like every other time you avoided telling me something.””
Her eyes filled.
“I was trying to protect you.””
“By lying?””
“No.””
“By hiding my father’s death?””
Her expression collapsed.
The words hung in the air.
Even Ethan looked uncomfortable.
My father had died believing his business had failed because of bad luck.
At least, that was what I believed.
He spent his final years blaming himself.
I remembered sitting beside him in the hospital.
He was weaker than he wanted anyone to know.
He squeezed my hand and said something I never forgot.
“Take care of your family.””
I thought he meant my wife and children.
I thought he meant protect them.
Now I wondered if he meant protect myself from them.
I looked down at the letter again.
There was more writing below the first line.
A second paragraph.
I hadn’t read it.
My fingers moved slowly.
*“I don’t know if I have enough time to fix what happened. I trusted someone I loved, and that mistake may cost my family everything.””*
My breath caught.
Someone he loved.
I looked at Claire.
She looked away.
Ethan spoke quietly.
“Your father didn’t hate Claire.””
I looked at him.
“What?””
“He loved her.””
That made no sense.
“My father loved Claire?””
Ethan nodded.
“He saw her like a daughter.””
Claire closed her eyes.
And suddenly, the anger on her face disappeared.
Only sadness remained.
“I made a mistake,” she whispered.
Everyone looked at her.
She wiped away a tear.
“One mistake.””
I almost couldn’t believe it.
“One mistake?””
She nodded.
“I thought I could fix it.””
“Fix what?””
She looked at the ground.
“Your father’s business.””
I waited.
Finally.
An answer.
A real answer.
“Your father was going to lose everything,” Claire said.
Her voice was barely above a whisper.
“He had debts he didn’t tell anyone about. He was trying to keep the company alive, but he was drowning.””
I listened.
Part of me wanted to believe her.
Another part remembered the letter.
“So what did you do?””
Claire looked at Ethan.
“I asked for help.””
Ethan nodded.
“I gave her the money.””
“How much?””
Claire didn’t answer.
Ethan did.
“Fifty thousand dollars.””
My heart stopped.
The exact amount.
The missing money.
The amount from Maya’s account.
I looked at Claire.
“No.””
She started crying.
“I was going to pay it back.””
“You used Maya’s money to repay Ethan?””
“No.””
“Then where did the fifty-one thousand go?””
She looked terrified again.
And this time, I knew why.
Because Ethan wasn’t the only secret.
“There’s more,” I whispered.
Claire said nothing.
I stepped closer.
“Isn’t there?””
Her silence answered me.
Maya looked at her mother.
“Mom…”
Claire covered her face.
“I never wanted this.””
I felt exhausted.
“You never wanted what?””
“The truth coming out.””
Those words hurt more than anything.
Because she wasn’t saying she never wanted to hurt us.
She was saying she never wanted us to know.
I looked at Ethan.
“What happened after you gave her the money?””
Ethan looked uncomfortable.
“She promised she would return it.””
“Did she?””
“No.””
Claire whispered.
“I couldn’t.””
“Why?””
She looked at me.
And I saw something I had never seen in twenty years.
Shame.
“Because the money wasn’t used the way I planned.””
I stared.
“What does that mean?””
She didn’t answer.
Ethan opened his mouth.
But before he could speak, a loud crash came from the driveway.
Everyone turned.
A man was standing beside the Mustang.
One of Brooke’s party guests.
But he wasn’t looking at the car.
He was looking at me.
He held a small envelope in his hand.
“Are you Daniel Carter?””
I stepped forward.
“Yes.””
He walked closer.
“I was told to give this to you if Ethan ever came back.””
My entire body went cold.
“Who told you that?””
The man looked uncomfortable.
“Your wife.””
Claire froze.
“What?””
The man handed me the envelope.
“She gave it to me three years ago.””
I stared at the envelope.
My name was written across the front.
Not printed.
Handwritten.
Just like my father’s letter.
I slowly opened it.
Inside was a single piece of paper.
Only one sentence was written.
May you like
And when I read it, I felt the ground disappear beneath me.
*“Daniel, if you are reading this, it means Claire failed to keep our secret.””*
