Chapter 12: The Secret Behind Maya’s Birth
I stared at Mark.
For a moment, I forgot how to breathe.
The words didn’t make sense.
They couldn’t.
My father.
Claire.
Maya.
Everything I believed about my family was being pulled apart piece by piece.
“You’re lying.””
Mark’s expression didn’t change.
“I expected you to say that.””
“Because it’s not true.””
“Then ask Claire.””
I turned.
I didn’t want to.
I didn’t want to see her reaction.
Because after everything that happened that day, I had learned one painful truth.
Claire’s silence was always an answer.
Her face was pale.
Her eyes were full of tears.
And she looked like someone who had finally run out of places to hide.
“Maya.””
My daughter looked at her.
“Mom?””
Claire took a shaky breath.
“I’m sorry.””
Maya stepped back.
“No.””
Her voice cracked.
“Not again.””
The pain in her voice hit me harder than anger.
Because this wasn’t about money anymore.
It wasn’t about my father.
It wasn’t about Mark.
It was about a daughter realizing her mother had spent her entire life keeping secrets from her.
“I want the truth,” Maya whispered.
Claire closed her eyes.
“I know.””
“No.””
Maya shook her head.
“I don’t think you do.””
The room became silent.
“You keep saying you were protecting me.””
Her voice trembled.
“But every time you protect me, I’m the last person to know anything.””
Claire started crying.
“Maya…”
“What happened before I was born?””
Nobody answered.
Then Ethan spoke.
“Claire needs to tell you.””
I looked at him.
“You knew?””
He nodded.
“Yes.””
“How much?””
“Everything.””
The anger came back instantly.
“You knew everything about my daughter’s life and said nothing?””
Ethan looked down.
“I promised your father.””
I laughed bitterly.
“Everyone promised my father.””
My voice echoed through the old house.
“Everyone except me.””
Claire sat down.
She looked exhausted.
Like she had been carrying a weight too heavy for too long.
“I met Mark before I met you.””
I stared.
“What?””
She looked at me.
“It wasn’t what you think.””
“That’s exactly what everyone says before telling me something terrible.””
She nodded.
“I know.””
She wiped her eyes.
“Mark worked with your father. He introduced me to the family.””
I looked at Mark.
He said nothing.
Claire continued.
“At first, he seemed like a good person. Your father trusted him. Everyone did.””
I listened.
“Then I met you.””
Her voice softened.
“You were different.””
I almost looked away.
Because remembering the beginning hurt.
The early years.
Before secrets.
Before money.
Before everything broke.
“You made me feel safe,” she whispered.
“Then why?””
The question came out before I could stop it.
“Why did you keep doing this?””
She looked down.
“Because I made one mistake when I was afraid.””
“What mistake?””
Claire looked at Maya.
“The truth about her birth.””
Maya’s face tightened.
“Tell me.””
Claire took a deep breath.
“When I was pregnant with you, I was scared.””
Maya looked confused.
“Why?””
“Because Mark found out something about the company.””
I frowned.
“What does that have to do with Maya?””
Claire continued.
“Your grandfather was investigating Mark. He knew money was missing.””
Mark scoffed.
“You’re leaving out your part.””
Claire looked at him.
“I know.””
Then she looked back at us.
“Your grandfather asked me for help.””
“Why you?””
“Because he trusted me.””
Her voice broke.
“And because he knew I was close enough to Mark to find out what he was doing.””
I understood.
Slowly.
“You were working against him.””
Claire nodded.
“Yes.””
I looked at Mark.
“And you knew?””
“Yes.””
The answer shocked me.
Claire continued.
“When Mark realized I was helping your father, he threatened me.””
Maya whispered:
“He threatened you?””
“Yes.””
“With what?””
Claire looked at me.
“With you.””
My chest tightened.
“He said he would destroy your father. He said he would make sure you lost everything.””
She looked at Maya.
“And then I found out I was pregnant.””
The room became quiet.
“I wanted to tell you everything.””
Claire looked at me.
“I wanted to tell you about Mark. About the money. About everything.””
“But you didn’t.””
“No.””
“Why?””
Her voice became barely audible.
“Because someone tried to hurt me.””
My expression changed.
“Who?””
She looked at Mark.
He shook his head.
“Don’t blame me for everything.””
Claire ignored him.
“I received a message.””
“What kind of message?””
She swallowed.
“A picture.””
“Of what?””
“Of the hospital.””
I felt cold.
“The hospital where Maya was born.””
Claire nodded.
“And a warning.””
“What did it say?””
She closed her eyes.
“‘If you tell Daniel the truth, he loses everything.’”
Nobody spoke.
Maya looked terrified.
“So what did you do?””
Claire looked at her.
“I stayed quiet.””
Maya’s eyes filled.
“And my whole life?””
Claire started crying.
“I loved you.””
“That’s not the same thing.””
The sentence destroyed Claire.
Because it was true.
Love and honesty weren’t always the same.
I looked at Ethan.
“What was changed in the records?””
He answered quietly.
“Someone changed the information about Maya’s birth date and medical history.””
“Why?””
“To make it look like something was wrong.””
I frowned.
“What kind of something?””
He hesitated.
Then:
“To make Daniel question whether Maya was his.””
I felt sick.
The cruelty of it was almost impossible to understand.
Someone had spent years planting doubt.
Not because it was true.
Because they wanted to hurt us.
I looked at Mark.
“You did this.””
He shook his head.
“No.””
“Then who?””
Nobody answered.
And that terrified me.
Because there was always another secret.
Another person.
Another layer.
Mark stepped closer.
“You’re finally asking the right questions.””
I stared.
“What does that mean?””
“It means you’re finally realizing I wasn’t the only person playing a game.””
I looked at Claire.
She looked away.
“Claire.””
She didn’t answer.
“Who else?””
Her face changed.
And I knew.
There was another name.
“Tell me.””
Claire whispered:
“Your father.””
I froze.
“What?””
She shook her head quickly.
“Not like that.””
“Then explain.””
She looked at Maya.
“Your father discovered something about your grandfather.””
I frowned.
“My grandfather?””
Claire nodded.
“Your father found out your grandfather wasn’t only investigating Mark.””
“What was he investigating?””
She took a deep breath.
“Your grandfather discovered that someone had been watching our family for years.””
The room went silent.
“Watching?””
“Yes.””
“Who?””
Claire looked at Ethan.
Then at the floor.
“I don’t know.””
I stared.
“You don’t know?””
“No.””
“Then why are you telling me?””
“Because your father found out.””
“And?””
Claire’s voice shook.
“And he was scared.””
The old house suddenly felt different.
Not like a place hiding secrets.
Like a place hiding danger.
I looked at the folder Mark was holding.
“What else is in there?””
Mark smiled faintly.
“You really want to know?””
“Yes.””
He opened it.
Inside was a final document.
A handwritten note.
But this time, the handwriting wasn’t my father’s.
I recognized it immediately.
It was Claire’s.
The date was from eighteen years ago.
Before Maya was born.
I read the first sentence.
And my entire body went cold.
*“If anything happens to me, Daniel can never know that Maya was never the reason we almost lost everything.””*
I looked up.
“What does that mean?””
Claire started crying.
Because she knew exactly what it meant.
Mark answered for her.
“It means Maya wasn’t the secret.””
He looked at Claire.
“She was the distraction.””
I stared.
“From what?””
Mark slowly turned the paper around.
The bottom of the page had one name.
A name that made Claire cover her mouth.
A name that made Ethan step back.
May you like
A name I had never expected.
*“The child Claire gave away before Maya.””*
