Chapter 13: The Child Nobody Knew Existed

I stared at the name.

But my mind refused to understand it.

The words on the paper were simple.

Clear.

Impossible.

*“The child Claire gave away before Maya.””*

I looked at Claire.

She looked like she had been waiting fifteen years for this moment.

Not because she wanted it.

Because she knew she couldn’t escape it forever.

“Daniel…”

I raised the paper.

“What is this?””

Her lips trembled.

“I can explain.””

I closed my eyes briefly.

That sentence.

The same sentence.

Always the same sentence.

Every secret.

Every lie.

Every impossible discovery.

“I don’t want an explanation.””

My voice was quiet.

“I want the truth.””

Claire covered her mouth.

Maya looked at her mother.

“Mom…”

The pain in my daughter’s voice was unbearable.

Not anger.

Not hatred.

Just confusion.

Like she was trying to figure out whether the person who raised her was still the person she knew.

I looked back at the paper.

“Who is this child?””

Claire sat down slowly.

For the first time all day, she looked completely defeated.

“Her name was Lily.””

The room became silent.

“Lily?””

Claire nodded.

“She was born before you.””

I looked at her.

“Before me?””

“Yes.””

“How much before?””

She swallowed.

“Two years.””

I felt something inside me shift.

Two years.

A whole life.

A person who existed before I ever knew Claire.

A person nobody had ever mentioned.

“You had a daughter?””

Claire’s eyes filled.

“Yes.””

Maya whispered:

“I had a sister?””

Claire looked at her.

“Yes.””

Nobody spoke.

The word hung there.

Sister.

A relationship that had existed somewhere in the world without any of us knowing.

I looked at Ethan.

“You knew.””

He nodded.

My anger rose.

“Of course you did.””

“Daniel—”

“No.””

I stepped back.

“Every person in my life seems to know something I don’t.””

Ethan accepted my anger.

“You’re right.””

That surprised me.

“You don’t get to say that like it fixes anything.””

“I know.””

“Then why?””

He looked down.

“Because your father asked me to protect Lily too.””

I froze.

“What?””

Ethan looked at Claire.

“She was part of the reason he created the account.””

I turned toward Claire.

“Where is she?””

Claire looked away.

My heart sank.

“She’s alive.””

The words came out slowly.

“She’s alive?””

Claire nodded.

“Yes.””

“Where?””

She didn’t answer.

I felt the anger building again.

“Where is your daughter?””

Her voice broke.

“I don’t know.””

Nobody moved.

“What?””

Claire cried silently.

“I haven’t seen her in seventeen years.””

Maya looked horrified.

“Why?””

Claire looked at her.

“Because I gave her up.””

The room went quiet.

I tried to understand.

I couldn’t.

“Why would you do that?””

Claire closed her eyes.

“Because I was young.””

“That’s not enough.””

“I know.””

“Then why?””

She looked at the floor.

“Because I thought I was protecting her.””

I almost laughed.

Not because it was funny.

Because it was the same excuse.

The same words everyone used.

Protecting.

Protecting.

Protecting.

And somehow, every secret caused more damage.

“What happened?””

Claire took a deep breath.

“Lily’s father disappeared before she was born.””

I frowned.

“You never told me you had another relationship.””

She nodded.

“I know.””

“Who was he?””

She looked at Ethan.

My stomach tightened.

“No.””

Ethan shook his head.

“It wasn’t me.””

Claire whispered:

“It was someone connected to your father.””

My chest tightened.

“Who?””

She looked at the paper.

“I was afraid you would hate me.””

“Claire.””

She looked at me.

“Mark’s older brother.””

Silence.

I stared.

“What?””

“His name was Andrew.””

I looked at Mark.

His expression had changed.

For the first time since he entered the house, he looked shaken.

“You knew.””

Mark didn’t answer.

I looked between them.

“You knew about Lily?””

Mark slowly nodded.

“Yes.””

My hands curled into fists.

“Everyone knew.””

Nobody corrected me.

Everyone knew.

Everyone except me.

Claire continued.

“When Lily was born, Andrew was already involved in the company.””

“Mark’s family?””

“Yes.””

“And?””

She swallowed.

“Andrew disappeared after he found out what Mark was doing.””

I looked at Mark.

“What was he doing?””

Mark’s face hardened.

“That’s irrelevant.””

“No.””

My voice became sharp.

“It’s the only thing that matters.””

Claire looked at me.

“Andrew found out Mark was stealing from your father.””

The pieces started connecting.

Another person.

Another secret.

Another person who disappeared.

“So Andrew knew.””

“Yes.””

“What happened to him?””

Nobody spoke.

Then Ethan answered.

“He died.””

The room went still.

“How?””

Ethan looked at Claire.

She looked away.

“An accident.””

My stomach tightened.

Another accident.

Just like my father.

I looked at Mark.

“Was it?””

Mark’s face remained blank.

“You’re making assumptions.””

“Because everyone around me keeps dying when they get too close to the truth.””

Nobody spoke.

The silence felt like confirmation.

I looked at Claire.

“What does Lily have to do with Maya?””

Claire wiped her eyes.

“Your father discovered Lily existed.””

“And?””

“He realized someone was using her existence against me.””

“Who?””

“Mark.””

Mark immediately shook his head.

“No.””

Claire looked at him.

“You threatened to expose me.””

“You were already hiding it.””

“I was trying to protect my daughter.””

“And you failed.””

The cruelty of his words was shocking.

Claire looked like they had cut deeper than anything else.

I looked at Mark.

“You used Lily.””

He shrugged.

“I used information.””

I felt disgusted.

“She was a child.””

“And?””

The coldness of the answer made my skin crawl.

Ethan stepped forward.

“That’s who Mark is.””

Mark looked at him.

“Careful.””

“No.””

Ethan’s voice hardened.

“You’ve spent years convincing everyone they were responsible for your choices.””

Mark laughed.

“And you’re innocent?””

Ethan went silent.

I looked at him.

“What does he mean?””

Ethan looked away.

Again.

Another secret.

I closed my eyes.

“I’m tired.””

Nobody spoke.

“I am so tired of finding out the people I trust have been lying.””

Ethan finally spoke.

“Your father knew.””

I looked at him.

“Knew what?””

“He knew there were multiple secrets.””

“And?””

“He created a way for the truth to come out without destroying everyone at once.””

I looked at the folder.

The letters.

The accounts.

The documents.

My father had planned this.

Not because he wanted to hurt us.

Because he knew the truth was too dangerous to reveal all at once.

“Where is Lily now?””

Claire looked at me.

“I don’t know.””

I stared.

“Then why is her name here?””

Mark answered.

“Because she has the last piece.””

“What piece?””

He smiled.

“The one your father died trying to protect.””

I felt cold.

“What?””

Mark pulled another document from the folder.

“This is why your father created the Maya account.””

I took it.

The page contained a name.

A location.

And a date.

The date was only three weeks after my father died.

My eyes moved to the bottom.

There was a message.

Not from my father.

From someone else.

Someone who had found the account years later.

Someone who knew exactly what happened.

The message said:

*“Daniel Carter, if you want to know why your father died, find Lily.””*

I looked up.

“Who wrote this?””

Nobody answered.

Then my phone buzzed.

Unknown number.

A message appeared.

One sentence.

One name.

*“Stop looking for me, Dad.””*

My blood froze.

Because the message wasn’t signed.

It didn’t need to be.

I already knew.

May you like

Lily wasn’t just alive.

She knew I was searching for her.
