Chapter 9: The Name He Was Never Supposed To Find
Marcus spent the next hour sitting in his car.
He didn’t drive.
He didn’t call anyone.
He just sat there with his hands on the steering wheel, staring through the windshield at a world that suddenly felt unfamiliar.
The street looked the same.
The houses looked the same.
People walked their dogs.
Neighbors carried groceries.
Children rode bicycles.
Everyone continued living as if Marcus Carter hadn’t just discovered that his entire identity was built on secrets.
But his world had changed.
Again.
He looked in the rearview mirror.
Nia was sleeping in the back seat.
Her small body was curled around her stuffed rabbit.
Safe.
Peaceful.
Unaware.
Marcus felt a painful ache in his chest.
Because while adults were fighting over secrets, she was still just a little girl who wanted someone to love her.
And he did.
More than anything.
His phone buzzed.
A message from Ethan.
*“I found the original documents. Meet me alone.””*
Marcus stared at the screen.
Part of him wanted to ignore it.
Part of him wanted to burn every piece of evidence and pretend none of this happened.
But he couldn’t.
Not anymore.
Every time he avoided the truth, someone else paid the price.
This time, it was Nia.
Marcus started the engine.
Twenty minutes later, he pulled into an old parking lot behind an abandoned warehouse.
Ethan was waiting.
Standing beside his car.
He looked different.
Older.
Tired.
Like the weight of his own choices had finally caught up with him.
Marcus stepped out.
Neither brother spoke at first.
Three years of silence stood between them.
Three years of anger.
Three years of pride.
Finally, Ethan held out a folder.
“This is everything.””
Marcus didn’t take it immediately.
“Why now?””
Ethan looked down.
“Because I was a coward.””
The honesty surprised him.
Marcus took the folder.
“What’s inside?””
“The original birth records.””
Marcus opened it.
His eyes moved across the page.
And there it was.
A name.
A name he had never seen before.
His hands went still.
“Richard Hayes.””
Ethan nodded.
“Your biological father.””
Marcus looked up.
“Who is he?””
Ethan swallowed.
“That’s the problem.””
“What?””
“He died before we could find him.””
Marcus stared at him.
“Convenient.””
“I know how it sounds.””
“It sounds like another dead person with another secret.””
Ethan looked away.
“I deserve that.””
Marcus studied him.
For the first time, he saw something different.
Not jealousy.
Not anger.
Regret.
“You hated me because you thought Dad chose me.””
Ethan didn’t answer.
“But he didn’t.””
“No.””
“He chose both of us.””
Ethan’s eyes filled slightly.
“He did.””
“Then why destroy everything?””
Ethan looked at the ground.
“Because I thought if I proved you weren’t special…”
He stopped.
Marcus waited.
“If I proved you weren’t really Dad’s son…”
His voice broke.
“Then maybe I wouldn’t feel like I was less.””
Marcus looked at him.
The anger was still there.
But underneath it was sadness.
“You could have just told me you were hurting.””
Ethan laughed bitterly.
“I didn’t know how.””
“No.””
Marcus shook his head.
“You chose revenge.””
Ethan nodded.
“Yes.””
The admission was painful.
But necessary.
“What does Daniel have to do with Richard Hayes?””
Ethan’s expression changed.
“That’s the part I don’t understand.””
“Explain.””
“Daniel knew about Richard before anyone else.””
“How?””
“I don’t know.””
Marcus looked at the documents again.
“Why would Daniel care about my biological father?””
Ethan hesitated.
“Because Richard Hayes was his father too.””
Marcus froze.
“What?””
Ethan nodded slowly.
“Daniel and you share the same biological father.””
The words landed like a final blow.
Marcus stared.
“No.””
“Yes.””
“No.””
He stepped back.
“That’s impossible.””
“I thought so too.””
Ethan handed him another document.
“This proves it.””
Marcus looked.
A family record.
Two names.
Two sons.
One father.
Richard Hayes.
Marcus felt numb.
Daniel wasn’t just Claire’s ex.
He wasn’t just Nia’s possible biological father.
He wasn’t just the man trying to destroy his life.
He was his half-brother.
Another family connection hidden from him.
Marcus looked at Ethan.
“And you knew?””
“No.””
“I don’t believe you.””
“I found out last week.””
“Before today?””
“Yes.””
“Then why didn’t you tell me?””
Ethan looked ashamed.
“Because Daniel threatened me.””
Marcus frowned.
“With what?””
“With the truth.””
Marcus stared.
Ethan continued.
“He knew about my mistakes. My debts. Everything.””
“So he controlled you.””
“Yes.””
Marcus looked back at the documents.
Daniel wasn’t randomly attacking him.
He wasn’t just trying to steal money.
He was trying to punish him.
But why?
“Why does Daniel hate me?””
Ethan looked at him.
“Because he thinks you stole his life.””
Marcus frowned.
“I never even knew he existed.””
“I know.””
“Then how is that my fault?””
Ethan didn’t answer.
Because there was no answer.
A car engine suddenly sounded behind them.
Both brothers turned.
A black SUV stopped near the warehouse.
Marcus’s body immediately tensed.
The door opened.
Daniel stepped out.
For the first time, Marcus saw him face-to-face.
He expected anger.
A monster.
Someone cruel.
Instead, Daniel looked like a man who had spent years carrying pain.
That almost made Marcus angrier.
Because people who caused damage often had reasons.
And reasons didn’t erase consequences.
Daniel walked closer.
“So.””
His eyes moved to the documents in Marcus’s hand.
“You know.””
Marcus stared.
“You’re my brother.””
Daniel nodded.
“Half-brother.””
The words sounded almost casual.
Marcus felt disgusted.
“How long have you known?””
“Years.””
“And you let me raise Nia.””
Daniel’s expression changed.
“Don’t talk about her like she belongs to me.””
Marcus stepped forward.
“She’s a child.””
“I know.””
“Then why use her?””
Daniel looked away.
For a moment, something like guilt crossed his face.
But it disappeared quickly.
“Because she was the only thing you cared about.””
Marcus’s jaw tightened.
“So you admit it.””
“Yes.””
The honesty was shocking.
“I wanted you to hurt.””
“Why?””
Daniel looked directly at him.
“Because my father chose your mother.””
Marcus frowned.
“What?””
Daniel’s voice became bitter.
“Richard Hayes left my mother when he found out about you.””
Marcus shook his head.
“That doesn’t make sense.””
“It does to me.””
Daniel stepped closer.
“You got the life I should have had.””
Marcus looked at him.
“I didn’t take anything from you.””
Daniel laughed.
“That’s what everyone says.””
“You’re blaming me for something I didn’t even know existed.””
“I know.””
The answer surprised Marcus.
Daniel looked away.
“That’s the worst part.””
Silence.
For a second, Marcus saw something human.
Someone broken.
Then Daniel’s expression hardened again.
“But it doesn’t change what happened.””
“What happened?””
Daniel looked at the documents.
“Your father changed everything.””
Marcus frowned.
“My father?””
“Yes.””
Daniel took a breath.
“He didn’t just hide our relationship.””
“What else?””
“He changed the inheritance.””
Marcus froze.
“What?””
Daniel smiled without humor.
“Now you understand.””
Marcus felt cold.
“What inheritance?””
Daniel looked at him.
“The one your father left.””
Marcus’s heart started racing.
“My father left no inheritance.””
Daniel stepped closer.
“That’s what he wanted you to believe.””
Marcus stared.
Daniel pointed at the folder.
“Your father didn’t leave you a company.””
A pause.
“He left you something worth millions.””
Marcus felt the ground shift.
Something bigger.
Something all of them had been fighting over.
The money.
The lies.
The manipulation.
It all connected.
Marcus looked at Daniel.
“What did he leave me?””
Daniel smiled.
But there was no happiness in it.
“An account.””
Marcus waited.
“And inside that account…”
Daniel’s eyes narrowed.
“Is the proof of why your father spent his entire life hiding the truth.””
Marcus looked down at the documents.
Then back at Daniel.
“What proof?””
Daniel took out his phone.
He showed Marcus a photograph.
A photograph of a woman.
A woman Marcus had never met.
But the name beneath the picture made his blood run cold.
Because it was the same name written on an old document.
The same name connected to Richard Hayes.
May you like
And the same name that explained why his father had chosen him.
*“Your mother was never who you thought she was.””*
