Chapter 8: The Truth His Father Buried

Marcus read the message three times.

Each time, the same sentence stared back at him.

*“Ask Marcus Carter why his father hid the truth about his birth.””*

For several seconds, he didn’t breathe.

The house was quiet.

Too quiet.

Nia was still asleep upstairs.

Claire was somewhere in the living room.

The morning sun came through the kitchen window, making everything look normal.

But Marcus knew better now.

Normal was just what people created when they wanted to hide something ugly.

He placed the phone on the counter.

His hands were shaking.

Not from fear.

From exhaustion.

For days, his entire life had been pulled apart piece by piece.

First, Nia searching through garbage.

Then Claire’s betrayal.

Then Daniel.

Then Ethan.

And now this.

His own birth.

His own father.

Marcus had spent years believing his family had secrets because people were flawed.

But now he wondered if secrets were the foundation everything had been built on.

“Marcus?””

He turned.

Claire stood in the doorway.

Her face looked tired.

She looked like she hadn’t slept.

“What happened?””

Marcus looked at her.

For once, he didn’t feel anger first.

He felt disappointment.

Because she was the person he had trusted most.

And she had known more than anyone.

“You knew about Ethan.””

Claire lowered her eyes.

“Yes.””

“You knew about Daniel.””

“Yes.””

“And now I’m supposed to believe you don’t know anything about this?””

He showed her the message.

Her face changed.

Only slightly.

But Marcus noticed.

“What?””

Claire looked away.

“Claire.””

She swallowed.

“There are things you don’t know about your family.””

Marcus stared.

“My family?””

“Yes.””

“Funny.””

His voice became bitter.

“Everyone keeps saying that.””

She stepped closer.

“Marcus…”

“No.””

He shook his head.

“I’m tired of finding out my life from other people.””

Claire looked hurt.

But he didn’t stop.

“Who sent this?””

“I don’t know.””

“Who knows about my father?””

She hesitated.

Marcus noticed.

“Who?””

Claire whispered:

“Ethan.””

His jaw tightened.

Of course.

“Call him.””

“What?””

“Call Ethan.””

“Marcus, maybe you should wait.””

“No.””

He picked up his phone.

“I waited four years.””

He called.

Ethan answered almost immediately.

“Marcus?””

“Did you send me a message this morning?””

Silence.

That was enough.

Marcus closed his eyes.

“You did.””

Ethan sighed.

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because you deserve to know.””

“Know what?””

Ethan was quiet.

Then:

“The truth about Dad.””

Marcus leaned against the counter.

“Start talking.””

Ethan took a breath.

“Our father wasn’t who you thought he was.””

Marcus frowned.

“What does that mean?””

“You remember how he always treated us differently?””

Marcus looked away.

He did.

Everyone noticed.

Their father praised Marcus.

Trusted Marcus.

Put responsibilities on Marcus.

Ethan always felt like the forgotten son.

“I thought he was disappointed in you.””

Ethan laughed softly.

“That’s what everyone thought.””

“Then what was it?””

“He was afraid.””

Marcus froze.

“Afraid of me?””

“No.””

Ethan’s voice became quieter.

“He was afraid someone would find out the truth.””

Marcus felt a chill.

“What truth?””

Ethan paused.

Then said:

“You weren’t his biological son either.””

The world seemed to stop.

Marcus didn’t speak.

He couldn’t.

Not because he didn’t understand.

Because he understood too quickly.

Another secret.

Another lie.

Another piece of his identity taken away.

“No.””

The word came out automatically.

Ethan sighed.

“I know how it sounds.””

“No.””

Marcus’s voice hardened.

“You’re lying.””

“I’m not.””

“You expect me to believe this after everything?””

“Marcus—”

“No.””

He walked away from Claire.

“First Nia. Now me?””

His voice cracked.

“Is everyone just going to tell me I’m not who I thought I was?””

Ethan went quiet.

Then said:

“I found documents.””

“What documents?””

“After Dad died.””

Marcus stopped.

Their father had passed away five years earlier.

Ethan continued.

“They were hidden in his office.””

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because I was angry.””

Marcus laughed bitterly.

“At least you’re consistent.””

“I know.””

Ethan sounded ashamed.

“I thought you already had everything.””

Marcus looked at the ceiling.

“Everything.””

He repeated the word.

A successful company.

A nice house.

A family.

All the things people thought mattered.

But none of it answered the question.

Who was he?

“What did the documents say?””

Ethan hesitated.

“Your birth certificate was changed.””

Marcus’s heart dropped.

“What?””

“There was another name on the original paperwork.””

“Whose?””

Ethan took a breath.

“Daniel’s father.””

Silence.

Marcus looked toward Claire.

She covered her mouth.

Even she hadn’t known this.

“What are you saying?””

“I’m saying your father raised you knowing someone else was your biological father.””

Marcus gripped the phone.

“That’s impossible.””

“I thought so too.””

“Why would Dad hide that?””

Ethan’s voice became heavy.

“Because he loved you.””

Marcus stopped.

The answer surprised him.

“What?””

“Dad found out when you were young.””

“Then why hide it?””

“Because he chose to be your father.””

The words hit Marcus differently.

Not like the others.

Not like betrayal.

Something else.

Pain.

Ethan continued.

“He said blood wasn’t what made a family.””

Marcus closed his eyes.

For the first time in days, a memory appeared.

His father teaching him how to ride a bike.

His father staying up late helping with homework.

His father sitting in the hospital after Marcus broke his arm.

Those memories were real.

No DNA test could erase them.

But it still hurt.

“So why tell me now?””

Ethan was quiet.

“Because Daniel knows.””

Marcus opened his eyes.

“What?””

“He found the documents too.””

A cold feeling moved through him.

“Why?””

“Because Daniel is using every secret he can find.””

Marcus looked at Claire.

“And he’s going to use this against me.””

“Yes.””

“How?””

“He wants to prove your family has always been built on lies.””

Marcus shook his head.

“He wants to destroy me.””

“Yes.””

A noise came from upstairs.

Small footsteps.

Marcus looked toward the staircase.

Nia appeared.

Her hair messy.

Her stuffed rabbit under one arm.

“Daddy?””

Marcus immediately softened.

“Hey, sweetheart.””

She walked down.

“Are we leaving?””

He knelt.

“No.””

“Are you sure?””

The question hurt.

Because she had already learned to expect people to leave.

Marcus held her hands.

“I’m sure.””

“But Mommy said…”

He stopped.

“What did Mommy say?””

Nia looked at Claire.

Then whispered:

“Mommy said Daniel might take me.””

Claire’s face changed.

“Marcus…”

He stood.

Slowly.

“You told her?””

Claire shook her head.

“I was scared.””

Marcus looked at her.

“No more excuses.””

The room became silent.

He wasn’t yelling.

He didn’t need to.

“I want you to understand something.””

Claire looked at him.

“Whatever happens between us…”

He looked down at Nia.

“She is not a prize.””

Claire started crying.

“She is not something Daniel gets because he wants revenge.””

His voice became firm.

“She is not something you use because you’re afraid.””

Nia looked between them.

Marcus picked her up.

“I’m taking her with me.””

Claire looked shocked.

“Where?””

“Somewhere safe.””

“You can’t just take her.””

Marcus stared.

“Watch me.””

Then his phone rang.

Unknown number.

He answered.

A familiar voice spoke immediately.

Daniel.

“Marcus.””

Marcus’s expression hardened.

“What do you want?””

“I heard you know.””

“Know what?””

“Everything.””

Marcus said nothing.

Daniel continued.

“You found out about Nia.””

“Yes.””

“You found out about Ethan.””

“Yes.””

A pause.

“And now you know about your father.””

Marcus’s grip tightened around the phone.

“How do you know that?””

Daniel laughed quietly.

“Because I was there when the truth was discovered.””

Marcus froze.

“What?””

“I’ve known your family’s secrets for years.””

“Why?””

Daniel’s voice became colder.

“Because your father destroyed my family.””

Marcus frowned.

“What are you talking about?””

Daniel answered:

“Ask him why your father changed his name.””

Marcus went silent.

“My father?””

“Yes.””

A pause.

Then Daniel said:

“Your father wasn’t just hiding who your real father was.””

Marcus felt a chill.

“He was hiding who he used to be.””

The call ended.

Marcus stood there holding the phone.

Behind him was his daughter.

In front of him was a lifetime of lies.

And for the first time, he realized the truth wasn’t buried in his family.

May you like

The truth was buried in the past.

And someone had just handed him the shovel.
