Chapter 3: The Box Under Owen’s Bed

Marcus had seen many things in his life that he wished he could forget.

The day his father died.

The night he held Nia for the first time.

The moment doctors told him his wife’s pregnancy had been complicated but his daughter was strong.

But nothing prepared him for the sight of that box.

A simple cardboard box.

Hidden beneath a seven-year-old boy’s bed.

A box that should have contained toys, drawings, or old school projects.

Instead, it contained secrets.

Owen stood frozen beside his bed.

His face was pale.

His eyes moved between Marcus and Claire.

“I didn’t know what it was,” he whispered.

Claire reached for the box.

“Owen, give that to me.””

But Marcus stepped forward.

“No.””

His voice was calm.

Too calm.

Claire stopped.

“Marcus.””

“No.””

He looked directly at her.

“You’ve been lying to me all day.””

Her expression tightened.

“Don’t do this.””

Marcus bent down and picked up the box.

It was heavier than he expected.

Not because of what was inside.

Because of what it represented.

How long had this been hidden?

How many times had he walked into this house and never noticed?

He carried the box to the middle of the room.

Nia stood behind him, holding onto his shirt.

Marcus glanced down.

“Sweetheart, stay with me.””

She nodded.

Owen looked uncomfortable.

“Mom, what’s happening?””

Claire immediately softened her voice.

“Owen, go downstairs.””

The boy didn’t move.

“Mom…”

“Now.””

Marcus looked at her.

“Why?””

Claire turned.

“What?””

“Why are you so desperate for him not to hear this?””

Her silence answered him.

Marcus slowly opened the box.

The first thing he saw was a stack of bank statements.

His name was printed across the top.

His account.

His money.

His hands tightened.

“What is this?””

Claire looked away.

“Nothing.””

Marcus almost laughed.

“Nothing?””

He pulled out the papers.

“These are my bank statements.””

Claire crossed her arms.

“So?””

“So why are they hidden under Owen’s bed?””

No answer.

Marcus looked through them.

At first, everything seemed normal.

Bills.

Groceries.

House expenses.

Then he saw something.

A withdrawal.

Then another.

Then another.

Thousands of dollars.

Not for food.

Not for the house.

Not for Nia.

His eyes moved down the page.

And his expression changed.

“Claire.””

She said nothing.

“Who is Daniel?””

The room became silent.

Even Owen looked confused.

Claire’s face lost color.

Marcus lifted the paper.

“There are transfers here. Every month.””

He looked at her.

“Who is Daniel?””

“No one.””

Marcus stared.

“Stop saying that.””

His voice echoed through the room.

“Every time something happens, you say no one.””

He stepped closer.

“Who is Daniel?””

Claire looked toward Owen.

Then toward Nia.

Like she was calculating what lie would work best.

Marcus saw it.

And it disgusted him.

“You’re still thinking about how to explain this.””

“Marcus—”

“No.””

He held up the papers.

“You took money from me.””

“I used it for the family.””

“The family?””

His eyes moved toward Nia.

“The family where my daughter was eating garbage?””

Claire’s jaw tightened.

“She wasn’t starving.””

Marcus looked at her.

“How many times are you going to say that?””

“She had food.””

“Where?””

Claire didn’t answer.

Marcus opened another envelope.

Inside were photographs.

He pulled one out.

And his stomach dropped.

It was Claire.

With a man.

A man Marcus had never seen.

They were standing outside a restaurant.

Holding hands.

The date on the corner was from eight months earlier.

Marcus looked at Claire.

“What is this?””

She immediately looked away.

Owen whispered:

“Mom…”

Claire snapped.

“Go downstairs!””

This time, Owen listened.

The boy walked out slowly.

But before he left, Marcus noticed something.

Owen looked hurt.

Not angry.

Hurt.

Like he had just discovered something too.

Marcus waited until the door closed.

Then he spoke.

“Are you cheating on me?””

Claire’s silence was louder than any confession.

Marcus nodded slowly.

“Wow.””

He sat down on the edge of the bed.

For a moment, he looked exhausted.

Not angry.

Just broken.

“While I was working?””

Claire’s eyes filled with tears.

“Marcus, it’s complicated.””

“No.””

He looked up.

“It’s actually very simple.””

She shook her head.

“You don’t understand.””

“Then explain.””

“I was lonely.””

Marcus stared.

“Lonely?””

“Yes.””

“I was working because you wanted this house.””

“I wanted a husband.””

The words hurt.

But Marcus didn’t look away.

“I was trying to provide.””

“And I was alone.””

He laughed quietly.

A painful laugh.

“So you punished my daughter?””

Claire’s face changed.

“What?””

“You heard me.””

“I never punished Nia.””

“Then why did she think she wasn’t allowed to eat?””

Claire opened her mouth.

But no answer came.

Marcus looked back into the box.

There was more.

He knew there was more.

People didn’t hide one secret.

They hid the evidence of many.

He removed another folder.

Inside were legal documents.

His eyebrows pulled together.

“What is this?””

Claire became nervous.

“Give me that.””

Marcus moved it away.

He opened it.

The first page made his heart stop.

A custody agreement.

With Nia’s name.

His name.

And Claire’s signature.

But there was something strange.

The document was incomplete.

A section had been edited.

Marcus read carefully.

Then looked up.

“You were planning to take Nia?””

Claire didn’t respond.

“You were planning to leave?””

Still nothing.

His voice became quieter.

“When?””

Claire wiped her face.

“Marcus…”

“When?””

“Soon.””

The word hit harder than he expected.

Soon.

She had been planning a future without him.

Without telling him.

Without caring what happened to him.

Or Nia.

Marcus stood.

“Who is Daniel?””

Claire’s eyes flickered.

That was enough.

Marcus noticed.

“You love him?””

“No.””

“Then why was he paying you?””

“He was helping.””

“Helping with what?””

She didn’t answer.

Marcus stepped closer.

“Claire.””

The room felt smaller.

The walls felt closer.

“Tell me the truth.””

For the first time, Claire looked genuinely afraid.

“Daniel knows things about you.””

Marcus frowned.

“What does that mean?””

“He knows about your business.””

“What about it?””

“He knows how much money you have.””

Marcus stared.

The pieces connected.

The missing money.

The hidden documents.

The affair.

The messages.

This wasn’t just betrayal.

It was planned.

Someone had been preparing something.

A way to take something from him.

Marcus looked at the papers again.

Then he noticed one final envelope at the bottom of the box.

Unlike everything else, it had no name.

No label.

Just a date.

A date from three months ago.

His birthday.

Marcus opened it slowly.

Inside was a letter.

His hands shook slightly as he read the first line.

*“If you are reading this, then Claire failed to convince you to sign the papers.””*

Marcus stopped.

His eyes moved to Claire.

She looked terrified.

“Who wrote this?””

She didn’t answer.

Marcus continued reading.

*“Marcus Carter is not the biological father of Nia.””*

The room went completely silent.

Marcus felt like the air had disappeared.

Behind him, Nia was still holding his shirt.

Still trusting him.

Still believing he was her father.

He looked down at the letter.

May you like

Then at Claire.

And the next words on the page revealed a secret that could destroy everything he thought he knew.
