Chapter 5: The Man Who Came Back
Marcus didn’t speak.
He couldn’t.
The voice on the other end of the phone was calm.
Too calm.
Like this conversation had been planned.
Like the man already knew exactly what Marcus was feeling.
Marcus tightened his grip on the phone.
“Who are you?””
A quiet laugh came through the speaker.
“You know who I am.””
“No, I don’t.””
“Yes, you do.””
Marcus looked at Claire.
She was standing frozen in the bedroom doorway.
Her face had lost all color.
“Daniel?””
The silence that followed confirmed it.
The man on the phone chuckled.
“So she finally told you.””
Marcus felt a wave of anger rise through him.
Not the explosive kind.
Something colder.
Something controlled.
“You knew?””
“I knew you would eventually find out.””
“You knew about Nia?””
“Yes.””
Marcus looked down at his daughter.
She was sitting on the bed, hugging a stuffed animal.
Watching him.
Confused.
Afraid.
He lowered his voice.
“You knew I was raising a child who might be yours.””
Daniel didn’t answer immediately.
Then he said:
“I knew there was a possibility.””
Marcus’s jaw tightened.
“A possibility?””
“Yes.””
“That’s all she was to you?””
Another pause.
“She was never supposed to be yours.””
The words hit Marcus harder than he expected.
Behind him, Claire whispered:
“Marcus, don’t listen to him.””
He turned toward her.
“You knew he would say that?””
Claire looked away.
That was enough.
Marcus stepped into the hallway.
He didn’t want Nia hearing anymore.
“You used me.””
Daniel sighed.
“You make it sound so dramatic.””
Marcus almost laughed.
“You destroyed my family.””
“No.””
Daniel’s voice remained calm.
“Your family was already broken.””
Marcus gripped the phone tighter.
“You don’t get to decide that.””
“I’m just telling you the truth.””
“The truth?””
Marcus looked back toward Nia.
“The truth is my daughter was hungry while you and Claire were making plans behind my back.””
Daniel went quiet.
For the first time, Marcus heard something different.
Not confidence.
Annoyance.
“She told you that?””
Marcus froze.
“What?””
Daniel sighed.
“Interesting.””
“What is?””
“She didn’t mention that part.””
Marcus felt a chill.
“What are you talking about?””
Daniel didn’t answer.
Instead, he asked:
“Did Claire tell you why she never wanted you to see the financial records?””
Marcus looked toward the box.
The bank statements.
The documents.
The secrets.
“What did you do?””
Daniel laughed softly.
“Always blaming me.””
“Because you’re the one who called.””
“I called because I wanted to save you time.””
Marcus frowned.
“Save me time?””
“Yes.””
Daniel’s voice became quieter.
“You’re going to find out everything eventually.””
“Then tell me.””
“Not over the phone.””
Marcus stared at the screen.
“Where are you?””
“I’ll send you an address.””
“No.””
Marcus’s voice hardened.
“You don’t get to drag me around.””
Daniel laughed.
“You think you’re in control.””
The call went silent for a moment.
Then Daniel said something that made Marcus’s stomach tighten.
“Ask Claire what happened the night Nia was born.””
Marcus looked toward the bedroom.
Claire’s expression changed.
She heard it.
She knew.
“What happened?””
Daniel ended the call.
Marcus stood there staring at his phone.
A second later, a message arrived.
An address.
Nothing else.
He turned around.
Claire was still standing there.
“What happened the night Nia was born?””
She looked terrified.
“Marcus…”
“No.””
He walked back into the room.
“I’m done with half-truths.””
Nia looked up.
Marcus softened his expression immediately.
“Sweetheart, can you go downstairs and watch cartoons for a little bit?””
She hesitated.
“Are you coming?””
Marcus forced a smile.
“Yes.””
“Promise?””
He knelt down.
“I promise.””
Nia studied his face.
Then she nodded.
Marcus watched her walk away.
Every step she took reminded him why he couldn’t walk away from this.
Not from her.
Never from her.
When she disappeared downstairs, Marcus turned back.
“Start talking.””
Claire sat on the edge of the bed.
She looked smaller now.
Not innocent.
Not forgiven.
Just tired.
“The night Nia was born…”
She stopped.
Marcus waited.
“I wasn’t sure who the father was.””
He nodded slowly.
“Keep going.””
“I was scared.””
“You already said that.””
“No.””
Claire looked up.
“You don’t understand how scared I was.””
Marcus didn’t respond.
She continued.
“I had just found out I was pregnant. Daniel disappeared. He stopped answering my calls.””
“And you met me.””
“Yes.””
“And you never told me.””
“I thought I could move on.””
Marcus looked away.
“You thought?””
Claire’s eyes filled with tears.
“I loved you.””
“Did you?””
She flinched.
“I did.””
“Then why did you hide the biggest thing about your life?””
“Because when Nia was born…”
She stopped.
Marcus waited.
“What?””
Claire looked down.
“The hospital asked for the father’s information.””
His stomach tightened.
“And?””
“I left it blank.””
Silence.
Marcus stared.
“You didn’t put my name?””
“No.””
The answer shocked him.
“But you let me raise her.””
“I knew you loved her.””
Marcus shook his head.
“That’s not an answer.””
Claire wiped her tears.
“You were the only father she had.””
Marcus looked toward the stairs.
“That should have been my choice.””
“I know.””
“No.””
His voice cracked.
“You don’t know.””
He walked to the window.
“For four years, I built my entire life around being her father.””
Claire whispered:
“I’m sorry.””
Marcus closed his eyes.
Sorry wasn’t enough.
Not anymore.
“Why did Daniel come back?””
Claire didn’t answer.
Marcus turned.
“Why?””
She hesitated.
Then said:
“Because he found out about you.””
“What about me?””
“That you had money.””
Marcus laughed bitterly.
“Of course.””
“He said you had built a successful company.””
“And?””
“He wanted a way in.””
Marcus looked at the box.
“The documents.””
Claire nodded.
“He told me if I helped him, we could leave.””
“Leave where?””
“Somewhere new.””
Marcus stared.
“You were going to take Nia?””
Claire started crying.
“I didn’t know what else to do.””
“You didn’t know?””
His voice rose.
“You didn’t know?””
He pointed toward the door.
“My daughter was outside eating garbage.””
Claire looked down.
“I made mistakes.””
Marcus shook his head.
“No.””
He spoke quietly.
“You made choices.””
The room became silent.
Then Claire whispered:
“There’s something else.””
Marcus looked at her.
“What?””
She looked terrified.
“Daniel didn’t come back alone.””
Marcus frowned.
“What does that mean?””
“He had someone helping him.””
“Who?””
Claire hesitated.
Then reached into the box.
She pulled out a photograph.
Marcus recognized Daniel immediately.
Standing beside him was another person.
Someone familiar.
Someone Marcus had trusted.
His heart sank.
Because the person standing next to Daniel wasn’t a stranger.
It was someone who had been inside his home.
Someone who had smiled at him.
Someone who had watched Nia grow up.
Marcus took the photo.
His fingers went cold.
“Who is this?””
Claire whispered the name.
And Marcus felt the entire world shift.
“Your brother.””
The room went silent.
Because Marcus had only one brother.
A brother he hadn’t spoken to in three years.
A brother who had disappeared after a bitter argument.
A brother who knew every detail of Marcus’s business.
Every weakness.
Every secret.
Marcus stared at the photograph.
Daniel.
His brother.
And Claire.
All connected.
Then his phone buzzed again.
Another message.
This time from Daniel.
*“Now you understand why I said your family was already broken.””*
Marcus looked at the screen.
Then at the picture.
Then toward the stairs where his daughter sat watching cartoons, unaware that the people closest to her had been hiding a secret that could change her entire life.

And beneath Daniel’s message was one final sentence.
*“Ask your brother what happened the night he left.””*
