Chapter 4: The Truth Behind Nia’s Name
Marcus read the sentence again.
Then again.
His mind refused to accept it.
*Marcus Carter is not the biological father of Nia.*
The words sat on the page like they belonged to someone else’s life.
Someone else’s nightmare.
Not his.
Not theirs.
He lowered the letter slowly.
The room was completely silent.
Even the sounds of the house seemed to disappear.
No television.
No footsteps.
No voices.
Just the quiet breathing of his daughter behind him.
Nia.
His little girl.
The child who reached for him when she was scared.
The child who waited by the window when he came home.
The child who called him Daddy before she could even pronounce the word properly.
Marcus looked at Claire.
“Tell me this is fake.””
His voice was barely above a whisper.
Claire didn’t answer.
That was the worst possible answer.
Marcus’s fingers tightened around the paper.
“Claire.””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“Marcus…”
“No.””
He shook his head.
“Don’t say my name like that.””
She looked down.
“Please let me explain.””
“Explain what?””
His voice broke.
“Explain why I’m finding out from a letter hidden under Owen’s bed that my daughter might not be mine?””
Nia looked up at him.
The word “daughter” caught her attention.
She didn’t understand everything.
But she understood his tone.
“Daddy?””
Marcus immediately turned.
The anger on his face disappeared.
He knelt down.
“Hey.””
Nia looked scared.
“Are you mad at me?””
The question shattered something inside him.
“No.””
Marcus pulled her close.
“Never. Never, sweetheart.””
“But Mommy says…”
She stopped.
Marcus looked at her.
“What did Mommy say?””
Nia’s eyes moved toward Claire.
The little girl hesitated.
Then she whispered:
“She said maybe you wouldn’t want me anymore.””
Marcus felt like someone had punched him.
He slowly looked up.
Claire’s face went pale.
“You told her that?””
Claire shook her head.
“I didn’t mean it like that.””
“How else do you mean it?””
“I was angry.””
“She’s four years old.””
“I know.””
“No.””
Marcus stood up.
“You don’t know.””
The pain in his voice was worse than shouting.
“You don’t know what it does to a child to make them think they can be abandoned.””
Claire wiped her face.
“I made mistakes.””
Marcus looked at the letter.
“Mistakes?””
He laughed softly.
“You keep using that word like you forgot to buy groceries.””
Claire flinched.
“You cheated on me.””
Silence.
“You took money from me.””
Silence.
“You hid legal papers.””
Silence.
“And now I’m finding out you might have lied about my own child.””
Claire looked away.
Marcus noticed.
The hesitation.
The fear.
The guilt.
And suddenly, he knew.
The letter wasn’t the lie.
The truth was worse.
“Who is her father?””
Claire closed her eyes.
A tear rolled down her cheek.
“I don’t know.””
Marcus froze.
“What?””
“I don’t know.””
His expression changed.
“You don’t know?””
“It was a long time ago.””
“Nia is four.””
“I know.””
“Four years ago isn’t ancient history, Claire.””
She covered her face.
“I was scared.””
Marcus stared at her.
“Scared of what?””
Claire looked at him.
“Losing everything.””
There it was.
The truth.
Not about Nia.
About herself.
Claire had been protecting Claire.
Not Nia.
Not Marcus.
Herself.
Marcus walked over to the bed and sat down.
His hands trembled.
Not because he was angry anymore.
Because he was hurt.
“So all this time…”
He looked toward Nia.
“All this time, I loved a child who might not be mine.””
Nia’s eyes filled with tears.
She didn’t understand the words.
But she understood the sadness.
Marcus immediately regretted saying it out loud.
He reached for her.
“Baby, come here.””
She ran into his arms.
Marcus held her tightly.
“I love you.””
He whispered it over and over.
“I love you.””
Claire watched them.
And for the first time, she looked ashamed.
“Marcus…”
He looked up.
“Don’t.””
She stopped.
“I need to know everything.””
Claire nodded slowly.
“I was dating someone before you.””
“Who?””
“Daniel.””
Marcus’s eyes narrowed.
The same name.
The same man.
“He’s Nia’s father?””
Claire looked down.
“I don’t know.””
Marcus stared at her.
“How can you not know?””
“Because I was with both of you around the same time.””
The confession was quiet.
But it destroyed the room.
Marcus felt sick.
He stood slowly.
“So you married me knowing there was a chance?””
“I thought Daniel was gone.””
“What does that mean?””
“He left.””
Marcus looked at her.
“And when he came back?””
Claire said nothing.
“That’s when you started taking money.””
She looked away.
“That’s when you started planning to leave.””
Still silence.
Marcus nodded.
He finally understood.
The affair wasn’t a mistake.
It was a return.
Daniel had come back.
And Claire had been preparing a new life.
A life funded by Marcus.
“Does Daniel know about Nia?””
Claire hesitated.
That hesitation answered everything.
Marcus’s voice became cold.
“He knows.””
She whispered:
“Yes.””
“And?””
“He thinks she’s his.””
Marcus closed his eyes.
The pain was overwhelming.
Because suddenly, the worst part wasn’t the cheating.
It wasn’t the money.
It wasn’t even the lie.
It was that everyone seemed to know something about his daughter except him.
“How long?””
Claire looked confused.
“What?””
“How long have you known?””
She didn’t answer.
Marcus stepped closer.
“How long have you known there was a possibility I wasn’t her father?””
“A few months.””
A few months.
Marcus almost couldn’t breathe.
Months.
While he packed her lunches.
While he took her to school.
While he kissed her forehead goodnight.
While she called him Daddy.
Claire had carried this secret.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
She whispered:
“Because I was afraid.””
“Of what?””
“You would leave.””
Marcus stared at her.
“And you thought keeping me trapped with a lie was better?””
Claire started crying.
“I loved you.””
Marcus shook his head.
“No.””
She looked at him.
“No?””
“You loved what I gave you.””
The words hurt her.
But Marcus couldn’t stop.
“You loved the house.””
“The money.””
“The stability.””
“But love?””
He looked at Nia.
“Love doesn’t let a child go hungry.””
Claire looked destroyed.
But Marcus wasn’t finished.
He turned back to the box.
Something was bothering him.
The letter.
The legal papers.
The bank records.
Someone had collected everything.
Someone wanted him to find this.
He picked up the letter again.
There was no signature.
Only one sentence at the bottom.
*“Ask Daniel why he came back after four years.””*
Marcus looked at Claire.
“What does that mean?””
She didn’t answer.
“Claire.””
Her face changed.
And Marcus knew.
She was afraid of that question.
“Why did Daniel come back?””
Claire whispered:
“Because he needed money.””
Marcus frowned.
“He came back because of money?””
“Yes.””
“How much?””
Claire swallowed.
“More than you would ever believe.””
Marcus stared at her.
“Why?””
Claire’s voice dropped.
“Because Daniel wasn’t just trying to take Nia.””
A chill moved through Marcus.
“What was he trying to take?””
Claire looked at him.
Then at the box.
Then at Nia.
And when she finally spoke, every word made Marcus realize this was bigger than a broken marriage.
“He was trying to take your entire life.””
At that exact moment, Marcus’s phone rang.
Unknown number.
He looked at the screen.
Claire immediately went pale.
“Don’t answer that.””
Marcus stared at her.
“Why?””
Her voice trembled.
“Because if it’s who I think it is…”
The phone kept ringing.
Marcus pressed accept.
“Hello?””
For several seconds, there was only silence.
Then a man spoke.
A voice Marcus had never heard before.
But a voice that already sounded like a threat.
“Marcus Carter?””
“Yes.””
The man paused.
Then said:
“You finally found out about Nia.””
Marcus’s blood ran cold.
“How do you know my daughter?””
Another pause.
May you like
Then the stranger answered:
“Because I’m the reason Claire lied to you.””
