Chapter 3

Mara stood slowly, still holding Leo’s hand.
She looked at the family—at Vivian, at her husband, at the wide-eyed children.
Then she looked at Elena.
"I didn't know who took him," she said. "Not at first. But years later... I found out. It was them."
She pointed a shaking finger at Vivian and her husband, Richard.
Elena froze.
"My own sister?"
"They said you were unstable," Mara said. "That the boy would be better off... given to a good family. But they gave him to me. To raise in secret. As my own. They paid me to disappear. To never tell anyone."
Elena stared at her sister.
"You stole my son," she said, each word heavy as stone. "Your own nephew."
Vivian drew herself up, though her hands shook.
"We did it for you," she said. "You were grieving your husband. You were lost. A child would have ruined everything. Your career. Your freedom. We gave him a life."
"A life as a servant?" Elena’s voice cracked. "A life where he is mocked and called trash? Is that what you call giving him a life?"
Richard stepped forward.
"Elena, calm down. We can explain—"
"Don't speak to me," Elena said, turning on him. "You helped her. You took part in this."
She knelt before Leo.
"Leo," she said softly. "I am your mother. I have looked for you every single day since you were taken from me. I never stopped."
Leo looked from Elena to Mara.
Mara nodded.
"It's true, baby. She's your real mother. And I... I was just keeping you safe until she could find you."
Elena stood, her expression turning to ice as she faced her sister and brother-in-law.
"You thought you could give him away. Hide him in your own house. Treat him like dirt. And I would never find out."
She pulled out her phone.
"I have lawyers," she said. "Private investigators. Every resource money can buy. And today... I finally have what I've been searching for."

She took Leo’s hand in hers.
"Get out of my way," she said. "Or I will bury you both."
