Chapter 1

They invited the poor boy to their mansion birthday party just to treat him like a servant—and laughed until his hands clenched into fists.

It was a warm Saturday afternoon in Beverly Hills, California.

Golden balloons lined the driveway.

A long table groaned under silver platters and expensive cakes.

Eight-year-old Leo stood near the gate, wearing his only clean shirt.

His mother worked as a maid here.

She'd asked if he could come so he wouldn't be alone.

The wealthy family agreed with a smile.

But as soon as he stepped inside, everything changed.

"Here's our little helper!" the birthday boy, Ethan, announced loudly.

All the rich children laughed.

"Go stand by the door and hold our jackets," Ethan ordered.

Leo hesitated.

"I was told I was a guest," he said quietly.

The mother of the household laughed coldly.

"Your mother works for us, boy. What did you expect?"

"You're here to serve. Now move."

They pushed him toward the kitchen.

Made him carry trays, refill glasses, pick up trash.

Every few minutes someone called out "Hey, servant boy!" and laughed.

They spilled juice on his shirt on purpose.

They called him "rag boy" and "street rat."

Leo bit his lip so hard he tasted blood.

He told himself to be strong.

For his mother.

But then Ethan walked over, grabbed a slice of cake, and smashed it right into Leo's face.

Cream dripped down his cheeks.

The whole room roared with laughter.

"Look at him! He even looks like a clown!" Ethan jeered.

That was the last straw.

Leo wiped the cake away.

His hands slowly clenched into tight fists.

His knuckles turned white.

His eyes burned with a rage no child his age should have.

He took a step forward, ready to fight every single one of them.

Suddenly, a woman's voice cut through the noise.

"Stop."

Everyone turned.

A tall, elegant woman stood in the doorway.

She was the family's oldest sister—someone even they respected.

She was staring straight at Leo.

Her face had gone deathly pale.

She walked toward him slowly, like she was seeing a ghost.

She stopped right in front of him and looked deep into his eyes.

Her hands began to tremble.

She reached out and gently touched his clenched fist.

Then she looked up at the family, her voice shaking but firm.

"Where did you get this boy?" she asked.

The mother rolled her eyes.

"Oh, he's just our maid's son. Why do you ask?"

The woman stared at Leo, tears filling her eyes.

May you like

"Because..." she whispered, barely breathing.

"He looks exactly like my son... the one they stole from me twelve years ago."
