Chapter 8: The Person Who Helped Her
The name on Ryan's phone belonged to Jessica.
She had been sitting near the middle of our table during dinner, laughing with everyone else while Megan sat on Daniel's lap.
Jessica and I had known each other for nearly eight years.
She had attended my wedding.
She had stayed at my house during a difficult period when her apartment flooded.
She had once driven across town in the middle of the night because I needed someone to talk to after a terrible argument with Daniel.
I had considered her one of the safest people in my life.
Now her name sat at the top of a conversation that ended with the words:
Tomorrow, she'll finally understand.
I looked at Ryan.
“Are you sure this is Jessica?””
He nodded.
“I checked the number.””
“Could someone else have used her phone?””
“I can't prove who typed every message. But the number is hers, and Megan was messaging her directly.””
I studied the screenshot again.
Jessica had asked Megan whether she was sure.
Megan had replied:
I've waited long enough.
Jessica's response had been:
Just make sure you know what you're doing.
I felt sick.
“What does that mean?””
Ryan shook his head.
“I don't know.””
I wanted to believe there was an innocent explanation.
Perhaps Jessica had misunderstood Megan's intentions.
Perhaps they had been discussing something unrelated.
Perhaps the words referred to a confrontation rather than an attempt to interfere with my marriage.
But the timing was impossible to ignore.
Megan had announced that she wanted to test my trust.
She had climbed onto Daniel's lap.
She had refused to move when she saw me.
And now I was discovering that she had discussed the previous evening with Jessica.
I looked toward the restaurant.
Jessica was still there, standing near the table with her coat over one arm.
She glanced at us.
When she saw Ryan's phone in my hand, her expression changed.
Then she looked away.
That was all I needed.
“I'm going to ask her.””
Ryan caught my wrist gently.
“Be careful.””
I looked at him.
“Why?””
“Because if she was involved, she might not tell you the truth immediately.””
I pulled my hand free.
“I've had enough people deciding what I can handle.””
He released me.
I walked back into the restaurant.
Jessica was putting her phone into her purse when I approached.
“Can we talk?””
She looked up.
“Of course.””
Her voice sounded normal.
Too normal.
I held out my hand.
“Show me your messages with Megan.””
Her expression froze.
“What?””
“Your messages. From last night.””
She glanced toward the remaining guests.
“Why?””
“Because Ryan showed me a conversation between you and Megan.””
Jessica's lips parted.
Then she looked at Ryan standing behind me.
Her face hardened.
“He had no right to go through her phone.””
I felt a cold certainty settle over me.
“You're not denying the conversation exists.””
She folded her arms.
“That's private.””
“So was my marriage.””
She flinched.
For a moment, I thought she might apologize.
Instead, she sighed.
“Look, I don't know what Megan told you, but she's been going through a lot.””
“So have I.””
“I was trying to help her.””
“Help her do what?””
Jessica looked away.
“I didn't think she'd actually do it.””
The words came out so quietly that I almost missed them.
I stared at her.
“You knew she was planning to sit on Daniel's lap?””
Jessica closed her eyes.
“I knew she wanted to confront you.””
“That's not what I asked.””
She looked at me again.
“Yes.””
The restaurant seemed to recede around me.
I gripped the back of a chair to steady myself.
“You knew she was planning to do that, and you sat there watching?””
“I thought it was going to be a conversation.””
“What kind of conversation?””
Jessica swallowed.
“Megan said you needed to wake up.””
I stared at her.
“Wake up to what?””
“That Daniel wasn't happy.””
I let out a short, disbelieving laugh.
“So she decided to humiliate me in front of thirty people because she thought she understood my marriage better than I did?””
Jessica shook her head.
“That's not how she explained it.””
“How did she explain it?””
“She said you and Daniel had been struggling. She said he confided in her because he couldn't talk to you.””
I felt my throat tighten.
“And you believed her?””
“I believed that she was worried about him.””
“Did you know about the coffee meeting?””
Jessica hesitated.
“Yes.””
“Did you know she had been messaging him?””
“Yes.””
“Did you know she wanted him?””
Jessica's eyes filled with tears.
“I don't know what she wanted.””
I stepped closer.
“You helped her plan a public confrontation with my husband. Don't tell me you don't know anything.””
Jessica looked around.
A few people were watching us now.
She lowered her voice.
“Megan said she wanted you to see how Daniel reacted when she got close to him.””
I felt my stomach drop.
“Why?””
“She said she wanted to know whether he would push her away.””
I closed my eyes briefly.
There it was.
The explanation I had been searching for, and somehow it made everything worse.
Megan had turned my marriage into an experiment.
She wanted to observe Daniel's reaction.
She wanted to see whether he would reject her.
And she had decided that the easiest way to get her answer was to use me as the audience.
“What did she expect to happen?”” I asked.
Jessica wiped her cheek.
“She thought he might finally admit he had feelings for her.””
The words hit me like a physical blow.
I stared at Jessica.
“Did Daniel ever tell her he had feelings for her?””
“I don't know.””
“Did he tell you?””
“No.””
“Then why did you help her?””
Jessica looked down.
“Because she kept telling me he was unhappy. She said you were both miserable and too afraid to admit it.””
I shook my head.
“You've been to my house. You've seen us together. You've heard us talk about our problems.
You knew we were struggling sometimes, but you never asked me whether I was okay. You simply believed her version of my marriage.””
“I thought I was helping her find closure.””
“Closure?””
Jessica nodded weakly.
“She said she needed to know once and for all whether Daniel would choose her if he had the chance.””
For a moment, I couldn't speak.
Megan hadn't merely wanted to embarrass me.
She had wanted an answer.
She had wanted Daniel to make a choice, even if she had to manufacture the circumstances.
And Jessica had helped her create the moment.
“Did Megan tell you what she planned to whisper to him?”” I asked.
Jessica nodded.
“She said she was going to tell him that if he wanted her to stop, all he had to do was stand up.””
I remembered Daniel sitting beneath Megan.
His pale face.
His uncertain hands.
His failure to move until I confronted them.
“Did you know he had agreed to any of this?””
“No.””
“Did Megan tell you he wanted her to do it?””
“No.””
“Then what exactly did you think would happen?””
Jessica started crying.
“I thought he'd push her away, and you'd see that nothing was happening. I thought she'd finally stop talking about him.””
I stared at her.
“You thought humiliating me would help me?””
She shook her head.
“I know how it sounds.””
“It sounds like you made a decision about my marriage without speaking to me.””
“I made a mistake.””
“So did Megan. So did Daniel. Apparently, everyone has made mistakes except the person who keeps having to live with them.””
Jessica covered her face.
I wanted to comfort her.
That instinct came automatically, the same way it had when Megan cried.
But I refused to follow it.
Not every tear required me to abandon my own pain.
I turned away.
Then Jessica said something that made me stop.
“There's one more thing.””
I looked back.
She lowered her hands.
“Megan told me that Daniel had already given her an answer.””
My heart began pounding.
“What answer?””
Jessica shook her head.
“I don't know exactly. She wouldn't tell me the whole conversation.””
“Then what did she tell you?””
Jessica hesitated.
“She said he hadn't rejected her the way she expected.””
I felt the blood drain from my face.
“That doesn't make sense.””
“I know.””
“Daniel told me he never encouraged her.””
Jessica looked miserable.
“Maybe he didn't mean to. But Megan said there was a moment when he looked at her and didn't say anything.””
I remembered the screenshot.
I don't know what you want me to say.
I remembered Daniel admitting that he suspected Megan had feelings for him.
And I remembered how he had remained silent when she climbed onto his lap.
Perhaps he hadn't wanted an affair.
Perhaps he had never intended to leave me.
But there was a difference between refusing to betray someone and refusing to close the door.
I walked toward the entrance without saying another word.
Outside, Daniel was standing beside Ryan.
He looked at me immediately.
“What happened?””
I stopped in front of him.
“Did you ever tell Megan you might have feelings for her?””
His face changed.
“No.””
“Did you ever tell her you weren't sure you were happy with me?””
He hesitated.
“Yes.””
“Did you ever tell her you didn't know what you wanted?””
He looked down.
“Once.””
I nodded slowly.
“And when she asked whether you would choose her if you were single?””
Daniel's eyes widened.
I watched the answer form on his face before he spoke.
“I told her I couldn't answer that question.””
The cold air seemed to disappear from my lungs.
I stared at him.
“You couldn't answer?””
“I didn't want to encourage her.””
“But you didn't reject her.””
“I was trying to avoid hurting her.””
I shook my head.
“You were protecting her feelings while she was deciding whether to destroy mine.””
He reached for me, then stopped.
“I never wanted this to happen.””
I looked at him for a long time.
“Neither did I.””
Then I turned toward the parking lot.
Behind me, Daniel called my name.
I kept walking.
Because the truth was no longer just about whether he had physically cheated.
May you like
It was about the space he had allowed another woman to occupy in our marriage.
And I was beginning to wonder whether he understood that space had a cost.
