Chapter 4: The Recording That Changed Everything

Ryan held his phone so tightly that his knuckles turned white.

Megan stared at the screen as if it were something dangerous.

“Put that away,” she said.

Her voice was different now.

The confidence was gone.

Ryan didn't move.

“You told me I was imagining things,” he said quietly.

“You told me I was insecure. You told me I needed professional help because I couldn't trust my own wife.””

Megan glanced toward the restaurant entrance.

“Ryan, we're in public.””

“I know.””

“Then stop embarrassing me.””

He let out a short, bitter laugh.

“Embarrassing you?””

The question seemed to surprise even him.

For a moment, I saw the exhaustion in his face more clearly than I had through the restaurant window.

This wasn't a man who had discovered one inappropriate joke.

This was a man who had been carrying something painful for a long time.

I looked at Daniel.

He had gone completely still.

“What's on that phone?”” I asked.

Ryan turned toward me.

“A recording.””

Megan immediately stepped forward.

“You cannot seriously believe you're going to play some private conversation without context.””

“Then give us the context,” Ryan replied.

She opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

Ryan unlocked his phone.

“I started recording a conversation last week because I wanted to remember exactly what was said. Megan had been telling me for months that she felt trapped in our marriage.””

He swallowed.

“She kept saying she wanted a different life. Every time I asked what that meant, she told me I was being controlling.””

Megan crossed her arms.

“Because you were.””

“Maybe I was,” he admitted.

“Maybe our marriage has problems. But that doesn't explain why you kept bringing Daniel into every conversation.””

Daniel's head snapped up.

Ryan noticed.

“That's right,” he continued.

“You mentioned him more than once.””

Megan shook her head.

“This is ridiculous.””

Ryan looked at the phone.

“Do you want to explain what you told me about him?””

She didn't answer.

Ryan pressed play.

At first, there was only background noise.

A car engine.

A door closing.

Then Megan's voice came through the speaker.

Clear.

Unmistakable.

“I just think some people end up with the wrong person.””

A pause followed.

Then Ryan's recorded voice asked, “Are you talking about us?””

Megan's recorded voice laughed.

“I'm talking about people in general.””

“You've been bringing Daniel up a lot lately.””

“Because Daniel understands what a husband is supposed to be.””

I stopped breathing for a moment.

Daniel stared at the phone.

Ryan's recorded voice sounded tired.

“He's married to your best friend.””

“I know who he's married to.””

The words were delivered so casually that I felt something twist painfully in my chest.

The recording continued.

“I'm not saying I'd do anything,” Megan said.

“I'm just saying that if things were different, I think we'd understand each other.””

Ryan's voice grew quieter.

“And what does that mean for me?””

There was a long pause.

Then Megan answered.

“It means maybe you should ask yourself why your wife is always comparing you to another man.””

The recording ended.

Nobody spoke.

The cold air seemed to press against my skin.

I had known Megan for twelve years.

I had trusted her with the details of my marriage, my fears, my hopes, and every vulnerable thing I had never wanted the world to know.

She had listened to me talk about Daniel as if she were celebrating my happiness.

All the while, she had been comparing him to her own husband.

I turned toward Daniel.

He looked devastated.

“Did you hear that?”” I asked.

“Yes.””

“Before tonight?””

He shook his head.

“No. I swear.””

Ryan lowered his phone.

“She told me that she admired your marriage,” he said to me.

“She said you and Daniel communicated better than we did. I thought she was just unhappy with me.””

His mouth tightened.

“Then she started asking questions.””

“What kind of questions?”” I asked.

“How often Daniel worked late. Whether you traveled together. Whether you argued about money. Whether he ever talked about leaving.””

I felt sick.

Those weren't ordinary questions from a curious friend.

They were pieces of information.

Pieces she had collected while I believed we were simply talking.

“Did you tell her anything about us?”” I asked Daniel.

He looked at me immediately.

“No. Not private details.””

Megan scoffed.

“Oh, please. Everyone talks about their relationships.””

I turned toward her.

“Stop.””

She blinked.

“Stop acting as though this is normal,” I continued.

“You were asking Ryan questions about my marriage while telling Daniel you'd take him in if we divorced.””

“I never said I was going to take him away from you!””

“You said you'd take him in.””

“Because I was joking!””

Ryan shook his head.

“You always call it a joke when someone catches you.””

Megan glared at him.

“You have no idea what you're talking about.””

“I have twelve years of marriage to you,” he replied.

“I think I know more than you want me to.””

She took a step toward him.

“You're twisting everything.””

“Then tell me what I misunderstood.””

She didn't answer.

For the first time, all three of us were waiting for Megan to explain herself.

And she had nothing.

I looked toward the restaurant window.

Some of our friends had noticed the confrontation and were watching from their seats.

I didn't care anymore.

My entire life had shifted in the space of one dinner.

The person I trusted most had deliberately crossed a boundary.

My husband had failed to stop her.

And now I was learning that the behavior hadn't started tonight.

“Daniel,” I said quietly, “I need you to answer one question.””

He turned toward me.

“Did you ever encourage her?””

His expression crumpled.

“No.””

“Did you ever flirt with her?””

He hesitated.

It was barely a second.

But I saw it.

My stomach dropped.

“Daniel?””

He looked at the ground.

“Not like this.””

I stared at him.

“What does that mean?””

Megan suddenly became very interested in her purse.

Ryan looked at Daniel with a new expression.

“You've been talking to her privately, haven't you?””

Daniel shook his head.

“Not secretly.””

“That isn't what I asked.””

Daniel rubbed his forehead.

“There were a few conversations.””

“About what?”” I asked.

He looked at me, and I saw genuine fear in his eyes.

“About how difficult things had been between us.””

I couldn't speak.

Our marriage had not been perfect.

We had argued about work, household responsibilities, and the way Daniel sometimes shut down when I tried to discuss something painful.

But those were conversations I believed belonged between us.

I had never imagined he might have shared our struggles with Megan.

“Why her?”” I whispered.

“I made a mistake.””

“What did you tell her?””

He swallowed.

“That we had been arguing. That sometimes I felt like I couldn't do anything right.””

My eyes burned.

“And she listened?””

“Yes.””

“Of course she did.””

I stepped away from him.

Megan lifted her chin.

“I was trying to help him.””

I turned toward her.

“You were trying to help him?””

“He needed someone to talk to.””

“His wife was standing right there. He could have talked to me.””

“Maybe he didn't feel comfortable talking to you.””

The words struck a nerve because they touched something real.

There had been times when Daniel and I struggled to communicate.

There had been nights when I went to bed feeling unheard.

But Megan knew those things because I had trusted her with them.

She had taken my vulnerability and turned it into an opportunity to position herself between us.

I looked at Daniel.

“Did you tell her you were unhappy with me?””

He looked miserable.

“I told her we were struggling.””

“Did you tell her you wanted a divorce?””

“No.””

“Did you ever tell her you wished you were married to her?””

“Never.””

Megan laughed under her breath.

Ryan turned toward her.

“What?””

She immediately shook her head.

“Nothing.””

“No,” Ryan said.

“Say it.””

She looked at him with open contempt.

“You want me to admit that Daniel and I understand each other better than you and I do? Fine. Sometimes we do.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“That doesn't mean what you think it means.””

Megan looked at him.

For one brief moment, her expression softened.

It was a look I had seen her give him before.

A look that seemed to belong to a conversation I had never been invited to hear.

Then she turned back toward me.

“You wanted the truth,” she said.

“There it is.””

I felt tears slide down my cheeks.

Not because I believed she had won.

Because I finally understood that she had never respected the boundaries I thought our friendship had.

I wiped my face.

“I'm going home.””

Daniel reached toward me.

“Please, let me come with you.””

“I need you to stop deciding what I need.””

He lowered his hand.

Ryan stepped aside as I walked toward the parking lot.

Behind me, Megan called my name.

I didn't turn around.

Then I heard Ryan say something that made me stop.

“If you're going to tell her the truth, Megan, tell her about the messages.””

I turned slowly.

Megan had gone pale.

May you like

Daniel looked as though the ground had disappeared beneath his feet.

And suddenly, I knew there was another part of this story neither of them had told me.
