Chapter 7: The Message From Someone at Our Table

I read the message so many times that the words began to blur.

You need to know that Megan wasn't the only person who knew about those messages.

Then the second one appeared.

And the person who knew the most was sitting at your table tonight.

I stood beside my car, staring at my phone while the cold air crept through my clothes.

For the past several hours, I had discovered that my best friend had been testing my marriage, my husband had been hiding conversations from me, and another married couple's problems had somehow become tangled with my own.

I had reached the point where I thought I couldn't be surprised anymore.

Apparently, I was wrong.

I typed a reply.

Who is this?

The response came almost immediately.

Someone who should have told you sooner.

My stomach tightened.

Then tell me now.

Three dots appeared.

Disappeared.

Appeared again.

Finally, another message arrived.

Ask Claire what she saw three weeks ago.

I looked toward the restaurant entrance.

Claire had been the person who rushed outside to tell me what Megan whispered before climbing onto Daniel's lap.

She had heard the words that revealed Megan's intention.

But she hadn't mentioned anything about messages, secret meetings, or other people knowing what was happening.

Had she been keeping something from me?

I turned around and walked back toward the restaurant.

Through the window, I saw Daniel sitting alone at the end of our table.

His head was bowed.

Megan was nowhere in sight.

Several guests had begun gathering their belongings, their birthday celebration effectively destroyed.

I pushed open the door.

The noise of the restaurant washed over me, but our table had become strangely quiet.

Claire noticed me first.

Her expression changed immediately.

She stood.

“What's wrong?””

I held up my phone.

“Someone just sent me a message.””

She glanced at the screen.

When she read the words, her face lost its color.

That reaction told me more than any explanation could have.

“You know something,” I said.

Claire swallowed.

“Can we talk somewhere private?””

“Not until you tell me whether that message came from you.””

She shook her head quickly.

“No. It wasn't me.””

“Then why do you look like you've seen a ghost?””

Her eyes moved toward Daniel.

He lifted his head.

“What is it?”” he asked.

I turned toward him.

“Someone says another person at this table knew about your messages with Megan.””

Daniel's face tightened.

“Who sent it?””

“I don't know.””

Claire touched my arm.

“Please. Let's go outside.””

I almost refused.

But something in her expression made me stop.

We stepped into the hallway near the restaurant entrance, far enough from the remaining guests that nobody could easily hear us.

Claire took a shaky breath.

“About three weeks ago, I went to a coffee shop near Daniel's office.””

My heart began pounding.

“The same coffee shop where Daniel met Megan?””

She nodded.

“I didn't know they were meeting there. I was waiting for someone, and I saw them sitting together.””

I stared at her.

“You saw them?””

“Yes.””

“And you didn't tell me?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I didn't know what I was looking at. They weren't holding hands or anything like that. They were just talking.””

“About what?””

“I couldn't hear everything.””

I waited.

Claire rubbed her palms together.

“But I saw Megan reach across the table and touch Daniel's hand.””

My chest tightened.

“What did he do?””

“He pulled his hand away.””

For one brief moment, I felt a flicker of relief.

Then Claire continued.

“Megan leaned forward and said something. Daniel looked upset. He shook his head, stood up, and left.””

I closed my eyes.

That detail matched nothing I had been told tonight.

Daniel had described the coffee meeting as a conversation about our marriage.

He hadn't mentioned that he had become upset enough to leave.

“What happened after he left?”” I asked.

“Megan stayed there for a few minutes. Then she started crying.””

I opened my eyes.

Claire looked miserable.

“I wanted to ask her what was wrong, but I didn't want to interfere. I convinced myself it was probably a private conversation.””

“And you never thought to tell me?””

“I should have.””

“Yes, you should have.””

She nodded, accepting the accusation without defending herself.

“I was afraid I'd be wrong,” she whispered.

“And I didn't want to destroy a twelve-year friendship over something I didn't understand.””

I stared at her.

“That is exactly why Megan got away with what she was doing.””

Claire flinched.

“I know.””

I wanted to be angry with her.

Part of me was.

But I could see the shame in her face, and I knew she hadn't been the one who had chosen to cross the boundary.

She had simply looked away when she should have asked a question.

That didn't make it harmless.

It made it another painful reminder of how easily people could mistake silence for kindness.

“Did you tell anyone else?”” I asked.

Claire hesitated.

“Yes.””

“Who?””

“Ryan.””

I stared at her.

“Ryan knew you saw them together?””

“He called me a few days later. He said Megan had been acting strangely, and he asked whether I'd noticed anything.””

“What did you tell him?””

“Everything I saw.””

My fingers tightened around my phone.

“So Ryan knew about the coffee shop before tonight.””

“Yes.””

“And he still came to dinner without telling me?””

Claire looked down.

“He said he wanted to speak to Megan privately first. He hoped he could understand what was happening without making accusations.””

I thought about Ryan sitting across the table, staring at his plate while Megan laughed with my husband.

I had mistaken his silence for indifference.

Now I understood that he might have been watching something unfold that he desperately wanted to believe wasn't real.

“Who sent me the message?”” I asked.

Claire shook her head.

“I don't know.””

I studied her face.

“Are you sure?””

“Yes.””

She looked toward the restaurant.

“But I think I know who might have sent it.””

Before I could ask, a voice came from behind us.

“It's time you heard the rest.””

We turned.

Ryan stood near the doorway, holding his phone.

He looked exhausted.

His eyes were red, and his tie hung loosely around his neck.

“Ryan,” I said.

“Did you send me those messages?””

He nodded.

I stared at him.

“Why didn't you tell me everything earlier?””

“Because I was hoping I was wrong.””

He looked at Claire.

“After she told me about the coffee shop, I confronted Megan. She said Daniel had been upset about something at work and she'd only been trying to help.””

“And you believed her?””

“I wanted to.””

He paused.

“Then I found something on her phone.””

My stomach tightened.

“What?””

“A conversation she thought she'd deleted.””

He held out his phone.

The screen showed a screenshot of a message exchange between Megan and a contact saved under a name I didn't recognize.

I leaned closer.

Megan had written:

He won't admit it to himself yet, but I know he feels something.

The reply read:

Then stop pushing him. You're making it worse.

Megan's next message made my breath catch.

I need her to see it.

The reply was immediate.

See what?

Megan answered:

That he isn't as happy as she thinks he is.

I stared at the screen.

The messages didn't prove that Daniel had feelings for Megan.

They proved that Megan believed she could use his private frustrations to create a crisis in my marriage.

But the identity of the person answering her messages was hidden behind the unfamiliar contact name.

“Who is this?”” I asked.

Ryan shook his head.

“I don't know. The contact was saved under a nickname.””

“Why didn't you show me this earlier?””

“Because I was trying to understand how long it had been going on.””

He took a breath.

“And because I found another conversation.””

My heart began pounding again.

“What conversation?””

Ryan looked directly at me.

“One between Megan and someone who was at your birthday dinner tonight.””

I felt the floor shift beneath me.

“Who?””

He turned his phone toward me.

A name appeared at the top of the screenshot.

I recognized it instantly.

It belonged to someone I had trusted for years.

Someone who had sat across from me at dinner.

Someone who had watched Megan climb onto Daniel's lap.

And someone who, according to the messages, had been helping Megan plan something long before that evening.

I looked up at Ryan.

“Why would they do that?””

He shook his head slowly.

“That's what I've been trying to figure out.””

Then he showed me the final message in the conversation.

It had been sent the night before our dinner.

Tomorrow, she'll finally understand.

I stared at the words.

Tomorrow had been tonight.

And suddenly, the entire scene at the restaurant looked different.

Megan hadn't simply made an impulsive decision.

May you like

She had been preparing for something.

The question was whether she had planned only to embarrass me—or whether she had expected Daniel to do something that neither of them had admitted yet.
