Chapter 3: The Whisper Nobody Was Supposed to Hear
Claire didn't speak immediately.
She stood beneath the restaurant awning, gripping the strap of her purse with both hands.
Daniel stared at the pavement.
I looked from one to the other, feeling as though I had stepped into a conversation that had started long before I knew there was anything to discuss.
“Please,” I said to Claire.
“Just tell me.””
She glanced at Daniel again.
“Did you know she was going to do it?””
He rubbed his face.
“Not exactly.””
The answer made my heart sink.
Not exactly.
Those two words opened a hundred new questions.
Claire's eyes widened.
“So you knew she was planning something?””
“That's not what I meant.””
“Then what did you mean?”” I demanded.
Daniel looked at me helplessly.
“She was talking to me before you left for the restroom.””
I remembered the beginning of dinner.
Megan had been unusually attentive to him, asking about his work and laughing at things that weren't particularly funny.
At one point, I had gone to the bar to order another drink.
When I returned, she was leaning toward him, speaking softly.
I hadn't thought anything of it.
Why would I?
She was my best friend.
“What was she saying?”” I asked.
Daniel hesitated again.
Claire stepped in.
“I heard her say, ‘Let's see how much your wife really trusts you.’”
For a moment, the street seemed to go silent.
I stared at her.
“What?””
Claire's voice trembled.
“That was what she said. I heard her clearly.””
Daniel looked down.
I turned toward him so quickly that he took a step back.
“Is that true?””
He nodded once.
I felt something inside me crack.
Megan hadn't simply climbed onto his lap because she was drunk, playful, or careless.
She had announced her intention to test my trust.
Then she had waited until I was out of the room.
She had chosen the exact moment when I couldn't intervene.
And when I returned, she had made sure I saw her.
“Why didn't you tell me that?”” I asked Daniel.
“I didn't know she would actually do it.””
“But you knew what she was planning.””
“I thought she was trying to get a reaction out of you.””
“And you let her?””
“I didn't know what to do.””
I stared at him.
“You could have stood up.””
He swallowed.
“You could have told her no.””
“I know.””
“You could have said my name and reminded her that she was your wife's best friend.””
His face crumpled.
“I know.””
The repetition did nothing to comfort me.
I wanted to believe that Daniel had simply frozen.
I wanted to believe he had been embarrassed and caught off guard.
But another question kept returning.
If Megan had announced her plan, why had he stayed seated long enough for her to do it?
Claire seemed to read my expression.
“He looked uncomfortable,” she said quietly.
“I noticed that. But I thought they were having some kind of private argument.””
I nodded, though I barely heard her.
Inside the restaurant, Megan suddenly stood up.
She grabbed her purse and looked toward the door.
Ryan remained seated for another moment before slowly rising to follow her.
Then Megan spotted us through the window.
Her expression hardened.
She said something to the people nearest her, pointed toward the entrance, and began walking our way.
“Oh, here we go,” Claire muttered.
The door swung open.
Megan stepped outside, her red dress bright beneath the awning's lights.
“What is this?”” she demanded.
Nobody answered.
She looked at Claire first.
“Why are you out here?””
Claire held her ground.
“Because she deserves to know what happened.””
Megan's eyes narrowed.
“Know what?””
“The truth.””
A short, incredulous laugh escaped Megan.
“Oh my God. Are we seriously doing this?””
She turned toward me.
“Are you going to let people make up stories about me now?””
I felt strangely calm.
“Claire told me what you whispered to Daniel.””
For the first time since I had known her, Megan looked genuinely startled.
It lasted less than a second.
Then she rolled her eyes.
“What did she supposedly hear?””
“That you wanted to see how much I trusted my husband.””
Megan's lips parted.
She glanced at Daniel.
It was a tiny movement, but I caught it.
She wasn't looking at him for reassurance.
She was checking whether he would contradict her.
And he remained silent.
Megan folded her arms.
“That's not what I meant.””
“Then what did you mean?””
“I was teasing him.””
“About my trust?””
“God, you make everything so dramatic.””
I shook my head.
“You deliberately sat on my husband's lap after I left the table. You pulled him closer when you saw me. Then you called me paranoid when I objected.””
“I didn't pull him closer!””
Claire spoke immediately.
“Yes, you did.””
Megan turned on her.
“You need to mind your own business.””
“I was sitting right there.””
“And you apparently spend your time listening to other people's conversations.””
Claire's face flushed.
“I wasn't trying to listen. You were whispering loudly enough for me to hear.””
Megan looked at Daniel again.
“Tell them I'm right.””
Daniel finally lifted his head.
“Megan, stop.””
The words were quiet, but they changed the atmosphere.
Her expression shifted.
“Excuse me?””
“Stop making this worse.””
“I'm making it worse?””
She pointed toward me.
“She is the one accusing me of trying to steal her husband!””
“I didn't accuse you of stealing him,” I said.
“I asked why you were sitting on him.””
“Because it was a joke!””
“Then why did you say you wanted to test my trust?””
She fell silent.
For a moment, I thought she might finally admit what she had done.
Instead, she turned toward Daniel with a look of wounded disbelief.
“I can't believe you're letting her treat me like this.””
He didn't respond.
Megan's face reddened.
“Twelve years,” she said to me.
“Twelve years of friendship, and you throw it away because of one stupid moment?””
I felt the words settle over me.
Twelve years.
She had said it earlier, too, as if the length of our friendship gave her permission to hurt me.
As if the memories we shared were a shield against accountability.
I thought of her sitting beside me while I tried on wedding dresses.
I thought of her helping me write my vows.
I thought of all the times I had stayed up late listening to her cry about Ryan, promising that she deserved to feel loved and appreciated.
Had she been comparing her marriage to mine all along?
Had she been measuring Daniel against Ryan while I sat beside her, believing we were simply two friends sharing our lives?
“I didn't throw anything away,” I said.
“You made a choice tonight.””
Megan's expression hardened.
“You're going to regret this.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“That's enough.””
She stared at him.
Then she laughed bitterly.
“Oh, now you have something to say?””
He looked shaken, but he didn't retreat.
“You crossed a line.””
Megan's eyes flashed.
“You were sitting there, too.””
The accusation landed between them.
Daniel went pale.
I looked at him.
Megan noticed and immediately changed her tone.
“I mean, he didn't push me away. You all saw that. Why am I the only one being blamed?””
No one answered.
Because she was right about one thing.
Daniel had been there.
He had allowed the moment to happen.
And no matter how uncomfortable he claimed to have felt, I couldn't ignore that.
I turned to him.
“Is there anything else I need to know?””
He looked at me for a long time.
Then his gaze shifted toward Megan.
Something passed between them.
A warning.
A fear.
A memory.
I couldn't tell which.
Megan noticed it, too.
Her expression changed, and for the first time that night, she seemed less concerned about defending herself than about what Daniel might say next.
“Don't,” she whispered.
The word was so quiet that I almost missed it.
But I heard it.
So did Claire.
I looked at Megan.
“Don't what?””
She immediately shook her head.
“Nothing.””
Daniel took a breath.
“I think we should go home.””
I stared at him.
“You think?””
He reached for my hand, but I stepped back.
“Not until I understand what's happening.””
Megan grabbed her purse more tightly.
“You're unbelievable.””
She turned toward the door, but Ryan was standing there now.
He had followed her outside without any of us noticing.
His face was pale, and his eyes were fixed on his wife.
“Megan,” he said quietly.
She froze.
Ryan looked at Daniel.
Then at me.
Finally, he turned back to his wife.
“Is this why you've been asking me questions about their marriage?””
Megan's mouth fell open.
The silence that followed was different from the one at dinner.
This wasn't embarrassment.
It was recognition.
Ryan had known something was wrong long before tonight.
And judging by the look on his face, he had finally found the piece that connected everything.
He reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out his phone.
“I think,” he said, his voice shaking, “it's time everyone heard the conversation you thought nobody else would remember.””
Megan stared at the phone.
May you like
For the first time that evening, she looked afraid.
And when Ryan pressed his thumb against the screen, Daniel whispered my name as if he already knew what was about to come out.
