Chapter 9: The Truth Hidden in the Papers

The page shook slightly in Rachel’s hand.

Or maybe it was Danielle who was shaking.

Nia couldn’t tell anymore.

Everything felt blurry.

The woman who had given her a watch that morning.

The father who had always protected her.

The woman who had accused her of stealing.

The stranger standing at the door with a folder full of secrets.

Everyone had a version of the truth.

And Nia was tired of being the last person to hear it.

“Give me that.””

Marcus reached for the paper.

Rachel smiled.

“Why?””

“Because you broke into my life, terrorized my family, and now you’re standing at my door pretending you’re helping.””

Rachel tilted her head.

“Pretending?””

She looked at Danielle.

“You still defend her?””

Marcus ignored her.

“Give me the papers.””

Rachel slowly handed him the page.

Marcus read it.

His face changed.

Nia watched carefully.

She expected anger.

She expected disappointment.

Instead, she saw confusion.

“What is this?””

Rachel’s smile faded slightly.

“You know what it is.””

“No.””

Marcus looked up.

“This isn’t what you said it was.””

Rachel’s expression tightened.

“What do you mean?””

Marcus held the paper.

“This is a guardianship form.””

“Yes.””

“A temporary one.””

“Yes.””

“Then why did you tell me Danielle signed away her rights?””

Rachel became quiet.

For the first time all night, she looked caught off guard.

Danielle closed her eyes.

“I told you.””

Rachel looked at her.

“Don’t.””

“You always twist things.””

Rachel laughed softly.

“You still think you’re innocent.””

Danielle stepped forward.

“I made mistakes.””

Nia looked at her.

Danielle continued.

“But I never abandoned my daughter because I didn’t love her.””

Rachel stared.

“You left.””

“Yes.””

The answer surprised everyone.

Danielle didn’t deny it.

“I left.””

Her voice cracked.

“And it was the biggest mistake of my life.””

Nia looked down.

That was the first time Danielle had said it without an excuse.

Not because of Rachel.

Not because of fear.

Because she regretted it.

Rachel shook her head.

“You see? Even she admits it.””

Marcus looked at Rachel.

“But you lied about why.””

Rachel didn’t answer.

Marcus read the page again.

Then he noticed something.

“There’s a second page.””

Rachel’s face changed.

“What?””

Marcus turned the paper over.

A smaller note was attached.

Written in handwriting.

Danielle’s handwriting.

Marcus read silently.

Then he looked at Danielle.

“You wrote this?””

Danielle nodded.

“Yes.””

“What does it say?””

Marcus hesitated.

Then he read:

“‘This agreement does not transfer permanent custody. It only exists until I can prove Rachel’s involvement in financial fraud and protect my daughter.’”

The room went silent.

Rachel’s face changed.

“That’s not supposed to be there.””

Nia stared.

“You knew about it?””

Rachel immediately looked away.

Marcus noticed.

“You knew.””

Rachel recovered quickly.

“I knew Danielle was lying.””

“No.””

Marcus’s voice became firm.

“You knew about the second page.””

Rachel said nothing.

Danielle looked at her sister.

“You found it.””

Rachel’s jaw tightened.

“Yes.””

“When?””

“Years ago.””

Nia felt a chill.

“So you knew she wasn’t giving you custody?””

Rachel’s eyes moved toward Nia.

“I knew she was trying to stop me.””

“Stop you from what?””

Nobody answered.

Then Rachel said something unexpected.

“From becoming like her.””

Danielle froze.

“What?””

Rachel laughed.

“You think you’re the good sister?””

Her voice changed.

Anger finally breaking through.

“You had everything.””

Danielle stared.

“What are you talking about?””

“You had Marcus.””

Rachel pointed.

“You had Nia.””

Her eyes filled with resentment.

“You had people who chose you.””

Danielle shook her head.

“That’s what this was about?””

“No.””

Rachel stepped closer.

“It was about proving that you didn’t deserve it.””

The words were cruel.

But they were honest.

Nia finally understood.

Rachel wasn’t just angry.

She was obsessed with winning.

With taking something from Danielle.

Even if that something was a person.

A child.

Her.

Marcus stepped between them.

“You’re done.””

Rachel looked at him.

“You think this ends because you found a paper?””

“No.””

Marcus’s voice was cold.

“It ends because you’re leaving.””

Rachel smiled.

“You still don’t understand.””

“What?””

She pointed toward the folder.

“That’s not the only thing I have.””

Danielle’s face changed.

“What else?””

Rachel reached inside.

She pulled out a small flash drive.

Everyone became still.

“What is that?”” Marcus asked.

Rachel looked at Danielle.

“Something she never told you.””

Danielle whispered:

“No.””

Nia looked at her.

“What is it?””

Rachel smiled.

“A recording.””

Marcus looked at Danielle.

“Of what?””

Danielle didn’t answer.

That was enough.

Marcus turned toward her.

“Danielle.””

She closed her eyes.

“It’s from the night I left.””

Nia felt her heart sink.

“What recording?””

Rachel answered.

“Your mother admitting she was afraid she would hurt you.””

Danielle immediately shook her head.

“That’s not what it says.””

Rachel smiled.

“Isn’t it?””

Marcus looked between them.

“Play it.””

Danielle’s face went pale.

“Marcus.””

“I need to know.””

The words hurt.

But they were honest.

Rachel connected the flash drive to her phone.

A recording began.

Static.

Then a voice.

Danielle’s voice.

Younger.

Exhausted.

Crying.

“I don’t know if I can do this anymore.””

Nia froze.

The voice sounded broken.

Then another voice.

Rachel.

“You’re admitting you can’t handle being a mother.””

Danielle’s recorded voice whispered:

“Maybe I’m not good enough.””

Nia felt tears forming.

Rachel looked at her.

“Listen carefully.””

The recording continued.

Rachel’s voice:

“Then maybe you should leave.””

A pause.

Then Danielle’s voice:

“Maybe.””

The recording stopped.

Nobody spoke.

Rachel looked satisfied.

“There.””

Marcus looked devastated.

Nia couldn’t breathe.

Danielle looked at her.

“Nia, please.””

But Nia stepped back.

Not because she hated Danielle.

Because she was overwhelmed.

“You said you left to protect me.””

Danielle nodded.

“I did.””

“But you also thought about leaving.””

Danielle’s eyes filled.

“Yes.””

The honesty hurt more than a lie.

“I was exhausted.””

Her voice broke.

“I was scared.””

She looked at Nia.

“But I never stopped loving you.””

Rachel interrupted.

“Love doesn’t change what happened.””

Marcus looked at her.

“Enough.””

Rachel smiled.

“You’re choosing her?””

Marcus didn’t answer immediately.

Then he said:

“I’m choosing the truth.””

Rachel’s smile disappeared.

Because she knew.

The recording wasn’t enough.

Not anymore.

Marcus turned toward Danielle.

“You made mistakes.””

Danielle nodded.

“Yes.””

“You should have told me.””

“Yes.””

“You should have trusted me.””

“Yes.””

“But you didn’t abandon her because you didn’t care.””

Danielle looked at him.

And for the first time that night, Marcus looked like he believed her.

Rachel stepped backward.

“You’re making a mistake.””

Marcus shook his head.

“No.””

He looked at the folder.

“The mistake was believing you wanted to help.””

Rachel’s expression turned cold.

“You’ll regret this.””

Then she looked at Nia.

“You especially.””

Nia held her ground.

“I’m not scared of you.””

Rachel smiled sadly.

“You should be.””

She walked away.

But before she reached the gate, she turned.

“One more thing.””

Nobody moved.

Rachel looked at Danielle.

“You still don’t know who found your hidden documents first.””

Danielle frowned.

“What?””

Rachel smiled.

“It wasn’t me.””

A pause.

“It was someone inside this house.””

Everyone turned.

Slowly.

Toward Vanessa.

Vanessa’s face went completely pale.

Marcus stared.

“Vanessa?””

She didn’t answer.

And that was the moment Nia realized.

May you like

The biggest secret had never been outside the house.

It had been living with them the entire time.
