Chapter 7: The Memory She Buried

“Did Rachel ever talk to you before today?””

Danielle’s question made Nia freeze.

The backyard suddenly felt colder.

The wind moved through the trees, but nobody noticed.

Everyone was focused on one thing.

Her answer.

Nia looked at Danielle.

“No.””

The word came out quickly.

Too quickly.

Danielle studied her face.

“Nia.””

“I said no.””

Marcus stepped closer.

“Sweetheart, think carefully.””

“I am.””

“You’re sure?””

Nia looked frustrated.

“Yes.””

She looked at the necklace in Marcus’s hand.

“I’ve never met her.””

Danielle lowered her eyes.

“Then why did she write that?””

Nobody answered.

Because they didn’t know.

Nia crossed her arms.

“Maybe she’s trying to scare me.””

Danielle looked at her.

“She is.””

“Then why are you looking at me like I’m hiding something?””

That question hurt.

Danielle immediately softened.

“I’m sorry.””

Nia looked away.

“I’m tired of everyone thinking I know something I don’t.””

Marcus stepped beside her.

“Nobody thinks that.””

But Nia looked at him.

“Everyone does.””

He didn’t respond.

Because he knew there was some truth in it.

The truth was that everyone in that house had secrets.

Except her.

And somehow, she was the person everyone kept questioning.

Marcus put the necklace back into the box.

“We’re not doing this outside.””

Everyone went back inside.

But the feeling followed them.

The living room no longer felt like home.

It felt like a place where the past had finally caught up.

Danielle sat down.

“I need to tell you something else.””

Nia looked at her.

“What?””

Danielle looked at Marcus.

“Rachel didn’t just know about my life.””

She paused.

“She knew about Nia’s.””

Marcus frowned.

“What does that mean?””

Danielle looked nervous.

“When Nia was a baby, Rachel used to visit often.””

Nia listened.

“She was my sister. I trusted her.””

Marcus nodded slowly.

“I remember.””

“She loved Nia.””

Nia looked surprised.

“She did?””

Danielle nodded.

“At least, I thought she did.””

The room became quiet.

“She used to hold her. Buy her toys. Sing to her.””

Marcus looked at the floor.

“I remember.””

Danielle’s voice became softer.

“But there were moments that felt strange.””

“What moments?”” Nia asked.

Danielle looked at her.

“Little things.””

“Like what?””

“She would say things.””

“What things?””

Danielle swallowed.

“She would say that you would be better off with her.””

Nia felt a chill.

“She said that?””

Marcus looked shocked.

“When?””

“Mostly when she thought I couldn’t hear.””

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because I thought she was joking.””

Danielle shook her head.

“I wanted to believe she was joking.””

Nia looked at the floor.

“So she wanted me?””

Danielle nodded slowly.

“Yes.””

The answer was terrifying.

“Why?””

Danielle’s eyes filled.

“Because Rachel couldn’t have children.””

Nobody spoke.

Nia felt her stomach tighten.

“She wanted a baby?””

“She wanted you.””

The words were quiet.

But they felt loud.

Marcus’s expression darkened.

“That’s why she threatened you.””

Danielle nodded.

“She thought I was the reason she couldn’t have the life she wanted.””

Vanessa looked disturbed.

“So she was obsessed.””

Danielle looked at her.

“Yes.””

Then Nia noticed something.

Something in Vanessa’s expression.

“You knew.””

Everyone looked at Vanessa.

She immediately looked confused.

“What?””

“You knew Rachel wanted me.””

Vanessa hesitated.

Just for a second.

But Nia saw it.

Marcus saw it too.

“Vanessa?””

Vanessa sighed.

“I didn’t know everything.””

“What did you know?”” Marcus asked.

She looked uncomfortable.

“Rachel contacted me before.””

The room went silent.

Danielle stood.

“When?””

“Last week.””

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

Vanessa looked at Marcus.

“Because I didn’t think it mattered.””

Marcus stared at her.

“You don’t think my ex-wife’s sister contacting you matters?””

Vanessa looked defensive.

“She didn’t threaten me.””

“What did she say?””

Vanessa looked away.

“She asked questions.””

“What questions?””

Vanessa stayed silent.

Marcus’s voice became firmer.

“Vanessa.””

She finally answered.

“She asked about Nia.””

Nia felt her heart sink.

“What did she ask?””

Vanessa looked at her.

“She asked if you were happy.””

The answer confused Nia.

“That’s it?””

“No.””

Vanessa swallowed.

“She asked if you ever talked about Danielle.””

Danielle stepped closer.

“And what did you say?””

Vanessa looked guilty.

“I told her yes.””

Nia stared.

“Why?””

“I didn’t think it was dangerous.””

“You gave her information about me?””

Vanessa’s face changed.

“I didn’t know who she really was.””

“But you knew enough not to tell anyone.””

Vanessa had no answer.

The silence became uncomfortable.

Then Marcus’s phone rang.

He checked the screen.

Unknown number.

Everyone froze.

Marcus answered.

“Hello?””

A voice came through.

Not Rachel.

A man.

“Marcus?””

His face changed.

“Who is this?””

“This is Officer Reynolds.””

Marcus relaxed slightly.

“Officer?””

“We need you to come to the station.””

“Why?””

A pause.

Then:

“We found something connected to the missing money.””

Vanessa stepped closer.

“What?””

Marcus put the phone on speaker.

The officer continued.

“The security footage from your neighborhood was reviewed.””

“And?””

“There was someone entering your property this morning.””

Everyone waited.

“Who?””

The officer hesitated.

“We believe it was Danielle.””

Nobody moved.

Danielle’s face went pale.

“That’s impossible.””

Marcus looked at her.

“Where were you this morning?””

Danielle stared.

“With Nia.””

The officer continued.

“Mr. Hale, we need you to come down here because the footage shows something else.””

Marcus tightened his grip on the phone.

“What?””

“The person entering your house was carrying a bag.””

Danielle looked at her own bag.

The same bag she had carried all day.

Nia noticed.

“Wait.””

Everyone looked at her.

“That doesn’t make sense.””

The officer continued.

“The person on the footage was wearing a coat and sunglasses, but the bag was clearly visible.””

Marcus looked at Danielle.

“What bag?””

The officer answered.

“A bag matching the one Danielle is carrying right now.””

The room went silent.

Danielle looked down at her bag.

Then back up.

“I didn’t do this.””

Marcus didn’t answer immediately.

And that hesitation destroyed something inside Nia.

Because for the second time that day…

she saw her father unsure.

“Dad,” Nia whispered.

Marcus looked at her.

“I don’t know what’s happening.””

Danielle looked hurt.

“You think I stole from you?””

“I didn’t say that.””

“But you thought it.””

Nobody spoke.

Then Nia suddenly noticed something.

Something small.

Something nobody else had seen.

The watch on her wrist lit up.

Another message.

Her hands trembled.

“What is it?”” Marcus asked.

Nia didn’t answer.

She slowly turned the screen toward them.

A picture appeared.

Not of the house.

Not of Danielle.

Not of Rachel.

A picture of the security camera footage.

And underneath it:

*Your father is about to choose who he believes. Make sure he chooses correctly.*

Nia looked up.

Her voice barely worked.

“Rachel isn’t trying to prove my mom is guilty.””

Danielle stared at her.

“Then what is she doing?””

Nia looked at the message.

“She’s trying to make everyone turn against each other.””

Marcus took the watch from her carefully.

But before he could examine it, another message appeared.

This one had no picture.

Only words.

*Ask Danielle why she kept the real reason she left hidden.*

Everyone looked at Danielle.

Marcus’s face changed.

“The real reason?””

Danielle closed her eyes.

She knew.

She knew this moment would come.

Nia whispered:

“What didn’t you tell us?””

Danielle slowly opened her eyes.

And the answer she gave made Marcus take a step back.

“I wasn’t running from Rachel.””

May you like

A pause.

“I was running from something I did.””
