Chapter 3: The Secret Behind Danielle’s Return

“My sister.””

The words hung in the air.

Nia looked at Danielle, waiting for an explanation.

But Danielle looked like someone who had just opened a door she had spent years trying to keep locked.

Marcus lowered the phone.

“Your sister?””

Danielle nodded slowly.

“Yes.””

“Why would your sister send me a picture of you and Nia?””

Danielle looked away.

“Because she knows.””

“Knows what?””

Danielle didn’t answer.

That silence was worse than any confession.

Vanessa stepped forward.

“This is exactly what I was talking about.””

Everyone looked at her.

She pointed toward Danielle.

“She shows up after years, gives Nia an expensive gift, asks her to keep secrets, and now suddenly there’s some mysterious sister involved?””

Danielle’s eyes hardened.

“Be careful.””

“Or what?””

“Or you’ll accuse the wrong person again.””

Vanessa scoffed.

“I’m just saying what everyone is thinking.””

Nia looked at Marcus.

But her father wasn’t looking at her.

He was looking at Danielle.

Like he was trying to figure out which parts of her story were true.

That hurt more than Vanessa’s accusation.

Because Marcus had always been the person who believed her.

At least, she thought he was.

“Dad,” Nia said quietly.

Marcus looked at her.

“I need to know what’s happening.””

“So do I.””

Her voice cracked.

“I didn’t do anything.””

His expression softened slightly.

“I know.””

But the way he said it sounded like he wanted to believe it.

Not like he already did.

Nia looked down.

Danielle noticed.

She moved closer.

“Nia.””

Nia looked up.

“I’m sorry.””

“For what?””

“For bringing you into this.””

Nia shook her head.

“You didn’t.””

“I did.””

Danielle’s voice became quieter.

“I thought I could fix things slowly.””

Marcus looked at her.

“What things?””

Danielle stared at the floor.

“The past.””

The room became still.

Nia had spent years wondering about Danielle.

Why she left.

Why she never came back.

Why Marcus never talked about her.

She had imagined hundreds of explanations.

But she never imagined there was a secret big enough to scare adults.

Marcus crossed his arms.

“You don’t get to walk in here and talk about fixing the past without explaining what happened.””

Danielle nodded.

“I know.””

“Then explain.””

Danielle took a deep breath.

“My sister’s name is Rachel.””

Nia waited.

“She and I grew up together. We were close.””

“What changed?”” Marcus asked.

Danielle’s fingers tightened around the strap of her bag.

“Everything.””

Vanessa rolled her eyes.

“That’s not an answer.””

Danielle looked at her.

“No. It’s a warning.””

Nobody spoke.

“Rachel and I stopped seeing the world the same way,” Danielle continued.

“She believed people owed her things. She believed if she wanted something badly enough, she could take it.””

Marcus frowned.

“What does that have to do with Nia?””

Danielle looked directly at him.

“Everything.””

Nia felt a chill.

“Why?””

Danielle hesitated.

Then she said:

“Because Rachel was the reason I left.””

Marcus’s expression changed.

“What?””

Danielle nodded.

“I didn’t leave because I didn’t love Nia.””

Nia’s eyes widened.

Danielle’s voice shook.

“I left because Rachel put me in a situation where staying would have hurt everyone.””

Marcus stared at her.

“That doesn’t make sense.””

“I know.””

“Then explain.””

Danielle looked at Nia.

“I was twenty-three. I was struggling. I was trying to be a mother while figuring out my own life. Rachel convinced me she could help.””

“What kind of help?”” Marcus asked.

Danielle swallowed.

“The kind that came with a price.””

Before Marcus could respond, Vanessa’s phone suddenly buzzed.

Everyone looked.

She checked the screen.

Her face changed.

“What?””

Marcus noticed.

“What is it?””

Vanessa didn’t answer.

She quickly locked her phone.

“Nothing.””

Danielle watched her carefully.

“That didn’t look like nothing.””

Vanessa’s eyes narrowed.

“You’re not in a position to question me.””

Nia noticed the strange exchange.

Something was happening.

Something everyone seemed to understand except her.

Marcus stepped closer.

“Vanessa.””

She sighed.

“It’s just a message.””

“From who?””

“No one important.””

Marcus held out his hand.

“Show me.””

Vanessa hesitated.

Then she gave him the phone.

Marcus read the message.

His eyebrows lowered.

“What is this?””

Nia couldn’t see the screen.

“What does it say?””

Nobody answered.

That made her more nervous.

Marcus looked at Vanessa.

“When were you going to tell me?””

Vanessa looked uncomfortable for the first time.

“Tell you what?””

“That Rachel contacted you.””

The room froze.

Danielle immediately turned.

“What?””

Vanessa looked at Marcus.

“She contacted you too?””

Nia felt completely lost.

“Wait.””

Everyone turned toward her.

“What are you talking about?””

Marcus looked guilty.

“Nia…”

“No.””

She shook her head.

“You all know something.””

Nobody spoke.

“And nobody is telling me.””

Danielle walked toward her.

“Nia, listen—”

“No.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Everyone keeps saying they’re protecting me.””

She looked at Marcus.

“But nobody asks what I want.””

Marcus’s face softened.

“Nia.””

“I’m twelve.””

Her voice trembled.

“I’m not a baby.””

The words hit the room.

Even Vanessa looked away.

Nia wiped her face quickly.

“I met my mother today.””

Danielle’s eyes filled.

“And instead of being happy, everyone is fighting.””

She looked at the watch.

The watch that had felt special only hours ago.

Now it felt like the reason everything was breaking.

“I just wanted one thing that was mine.””

Nobody answered.

Because nobody could.

Then the front door suddenly opened.

Everyone turned.

A man stood there.

Older.

Tall.

With a serious expression.

Marcus immediately stepped forward.

“What are you doing here?””

The man looked around the room.

His eyes landed on Danielle.

Then Nia.

Then the watch.

“I heard Rachel was back.””

Danielle’s face went pale.

“Ethan.””

Nia looked between them.

“Who is that?””

The man ignored her.

He looked at Marcus.

“You need to understand something.””

Marcus’s voice became cold.

“You’re not welcome here.””

The man smiled slightly.

“Maybe not.””

Then he looked at Nia.

“But she deserves to know the truth.””

Danielle stepped between them.

“Don’t.””

The man’s smile disappeared.

“Still protecting her?””

Nia’s heart started racing.

“What truth?””

Nobody answered.

The man reached into his jacket and pulled out a small envelope.

He placed it on the table.

“I think you should open that.””

Marcus stared at the envelope.

“What is it?””

The man looked at Danielle.

“Something she should have told you years ago.””

Danielle whispered:

“Ethan, please.””

But he stepped back.

“I’m done keeping your secrets.””

Then he looked directly at Nia.

“Ask your mother why she really disappeared.””

The front door closed behind him.

Nobody moved.

Nia stared at the envelope sitting on the table.

A simple white envelope.

No name.

No label.

Just waiting.

Marcus slowly reached for it.

But Danielle grabbed his hand.

“Don’t.””

Everyone looked at her.

Marcus pulled away.

“Why?””

Danielle’s eyes filled with fear.

“Because once you open it…”

May you like

She looked at Nia.

“…you’ll never see me the same way again.””
