Chapter 1: The Secret on Her Wrist
“Someone gave me this watch,” Nia whispered, and she had no idea those six words would turn the happiest day of her life into the day everyone looked at her like a thief.
She had walked through the front door after school with a smile she couldn’t hide. The brand-new Apple Watch on her wrist felt almost unreal, its smooth screen shining every time sunlight slipped through the hallway window.
For the first time in a long time, Nia felt like someone had chosen her.
Not because she was helpful.
Not because she was quiet.
Not because she was the kid who never caused problems.
Just because she was her.
She lifted her wrist as she stepped inside the house, watching the tiny screen light up.
A message from earlier that morning was still there.
*I’m glad I got to see you today. Keep smiling. —Mom*
Nia quickly turned the screen off.
Her heart still felt strange every time she saw that word.
Mom.
She had a mother.
A biological mother.
Danielle.
The woman who had disappeared from her life years ago had suddenly returned to town, standing outside a small coffee shop that morning with tears in her eyes and a nervous smile on her face.
“Nia?”” Danielle had asked softly.
Nia had stopped walking.
She knew that face from old photographs tucked away in a drawer. She knew the voice from a few old videos Marcus had saved but never played.
But seeing her in real life felt impossible.
“You’re really here,” Nia had whispered.
Danielle nodded, wiping away a tear.
“I am.””
They had spent almost two hours talking.
Danielle told her she never stopped thinking about her. She told her there were reasons she left, reasons she wasn’t ready to explain yet, but she wanted to fix what she could.
Before Nia left, Danielle reached into her bag and handed her a small white box.
“I know this doesn’t replace all the birthdays I missed,” Danielle said.
“I know it doesn’t fix everything. But I wanted you to have something from me.””
Nia opened it and froze.
An Apple Watch.
A brand-new one.
Her eyes widened.
“I can’t take this.””
Danielle smiled sadly.
“Yes, you can.””
“It’s too expensive.””
“It’s not about the price.””
Nia looked down at the watch.
For a moment, she felt twelve years old and five years old at the same time.
The little girl who once waited by the window for someone who never came.
And the older girl who wanted to believe people could change.
Before they separated, Danielle grabbed her hand.
“I need to talk to Marcus before everyone knows I’m back,” she said carefully.
Nia frowned.
“Why?””
“Because he deserves to hear it from me first.””
Nia didn’t fully understand.
“But you’re coming back?””
Danielle hesitated.
“I hope so.””
That answer stayed with Nia all day.
Still, she promised.
“I won’t tell anyone yet.””
Danielle smiled.
“Thank you, sweetheart.””
Nia thought she was keeping a surprise.
She thought she was protecting a moment between a mother and daughter.
She never imagined it would make her look guilty.
“Is that a new Apple Watch?””
Vanessa’s voice snapped Nia back to reality.
Nia looked toward the living room.
Vanessa was sitting on the couch with her laptop open, but she wasn’t looking at the screen anymore.
She was staring directly at Nia’s wrist.
The smile disappeared from Nia’s face.
“Yeah,” Nia answered.
Vanessa closed the laptop slowly.
“Where did you get it?””
Nia touched the watch instinctively.
“It was a gift.””
Vanessa stood.
“A gift?””
“Yes.””
“From who?””
Nia looked away.
She knew she should tell the truth.
But Danielle had trusted her.
“I promised I wouldn’t say yet.””
The room became quiet.
Too quiet.
Vanessa’s expression changed.
Not confusion.
Not curiosity.
Suspicion.
“What does that mean?””
Nia swallowed.
“It means I can’t tell you right now.””
Vanessa walked closer.
“Nia, do you understand how much that watch costs?””
Nia nodded.
“I know.””
“Then you understand why I’m asking.””
“I didn’t do anything wrong.””
Vanessa stared at her.
“Interesting.””
Nia’s stomach tightened.
“What?””
Vanessa walked past her toward the coffee table.
“My purse was right here this morning.””
Nia frowned.
“What does that have to do with my watch?””
Vanessa didn’t answer.
She grabbed her purse and started searching through it.
The sound of zippers opening and objects moving around suddenly felt louder than it should have.
Nia stood frozen near the doorway.
“Vanessa?””
No response.
Vanessa checked one pocket.
Then another.
Then another.
Her face slowly changed.
Nia noticed.
“What happened?””
Vanessa looked up.
“A thousand dollars is missing.””
Nia blinked.
“What?””
“My money.””
Nia’s heart dropped.
“I didn’t take it.””
Vanessa stared at her wrist.
The watch suddenly felt heavier.
“Then explain that.””
Nia looked down.
“What?””
“That expensive watch.””
Her voice was sharper now.
Nia stepped back.
“I already told you. Someone gave it to me.””
“Who?””
“I can’t tell you.””
Vanessa laughed once, but there was no humor in it.
“You can’t tell me?””
“No.””
“Because this person doesn’t exist?””
Nia’s eyes widened.
“That’s not true.””
“Then who bought you a watch that costs hundreds of dollars?””
Nia felt heat rise in her face.
She wasn’t embarrassed about the watch anymore.
She was hurt.
Because Vanessa wasn’t asking.
She was accusing.
“I didn’t steal anything.””
Vanessa crossed her arms.
“Then prove it.””
“How?””
“Tell me where you got it.””
Nia looked at the floor.
She remembered Danielle’s face.
The hope in her eyes.
The fear that Marcus would reject her before she had a chance to explain.
“I can’t.””
Vanessa shook her head.
“That’s what I thought.””
Nia’s voice became shaky.
“You don’t believe me?””
“I believe what I see.””
“What do you see?””
Vanessa pointed at the watch.
“I see a child wearing something she couldn’t possibly afford.””
Nia felt tears forming but refused to let them fall.
“I’m not a thief.””
The voices from the living room had already drawn attention.
Caleb came down the hallway, followed by Ava.
Caleb looked between them.
“What’s going on?””
Vanessa didn’t hesitate.
“Nia stole money from my purse.””
Nia turned around.
“What?””
Ava covered her mouth.
“No way.””
“I didn’t!”” Nia shouted.
Caleb looked uncomfortable.
“Nia, are you serious?””
“I said I didn’t!””
Vanessa picked up her phone.
“I’m calling Marcus.””
Nia’s chest tightened.
“Wait.””
But Vanessa was already dialing.
The phone rang.
Once.
Twice.
Three times.
Then Marcus answered.
“Hey, Vanessa. What’s up?””
Vanessa looked directly at Nia.
Her voice was loud.
Almost like she wanted everyone to hear.
“Marcus, Nia stole a thousand dollars from my purse and bought an Apple Watch.””
Nia felt like the air had disappeared.
“Dad…” she whispered.
There was silence from the phone.
A long silence.
Then Marcus spoke.
“Are you sure?””
Vanessa answered immediately.
“The money is gone. She’s wearing an expensive watch. She refuses to say where she got it.””
Nia shook her head.
“No, Dad. Please listen to me.””
Vanessa turned away slightly.
Marcus’s voice came through the speaker.
“Nia, is that true?””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“No.””
One word.
But she said it with everything she had.
“No, Dad. I didn’t take anything.””
Another silence.
Then Marcus said quietly:
“Don’t touch anything. I’m coming home.””
The call ended.
For a few seconds, Nia felt relief.
Her father was coming.
He would listen.
He knew her.
He knew she would never steal.
But when she looked at Vanessa, that hope began to disappear.
Because Vanessa wasn’t angry anymore.
She looked certain.
And that scared Nia more than the accusation.
A few minutes later, Vanessa walked toward her.
“You know what the worst part is?””
Nia didn’t answer.
“You had everyone fooled.””
Nia stared at her.
“I didn’t do anything.””
Vanessa leaned closer.
“Then when Marcus gets here, you can explain why the person who gave you that watch needed you to keep a secret.””
Nia froze.
Her face went pale.
Vanessa’s eyes narrowed.
“You didn’t think I knew about the secret, did you?””
Nia’s heart stopped.
“How do you know?””
Vanessa smiled faintly.
And before she could answer, the front door opened.
A familiar voice came from the hallway.
“Nia?””
She turned.
Marcus was home.
But he wasn’t alone.
Standing beside him was a woman Nia hadn’t seen in years.
A woman holding a small bag in her hands.
A woman who looked just as shocked to see her as Nia was to see her.
Danielle.
May you like
And the first words out of her mouth made Nia realize everything was about to fall apart.
“Marcus… why is everyone looking at my daughter like she committed a crime?””
