Chapter 2: The Woman Who Came Back
The room went silent.
Not the comfortable kind of silence.
The kind that made every breath feel too loud.
Nia stood frozen near the staircase, staring at Danielle.
The woman she had secretly met that morning.
The woman who had placed the watch around her wrist with trembling hands.
The woman who had asked her for one small favor.
Don’t tell anyone yet.
Now everyone knew.
But not the way Nia had imagined.
Marcus looked from Danielle to Vanessa, then finally to Nia.
His expression was impossible to read.
“Nia,” he said slowly, “what is going on?””
Nia opened her mouth.
Nothing came out.
Because suddenly, telling the truth felt terrifying.
Not because she had done anything wrong.
Because she didn’t know what would happen after.
She looked at Danielle.
Danielle gave her a small, encouraging nod.
But Vanessa stepped forward first.
“I think we all know what’s going on.””
Danielle’s eyes moved toward her.
“And you are?””
Vanessa crossed her arms.
“Vanessa. Marcus’s wife.””
The word wife hit Nia harder than she expected.
She knew Vanessa was Marcus’s wife.
She had lived with her for years.
But hearing Vanessa say it while standing beside Danielle felt like watching two different parts of her life crash into each other.
Danielle looked at Marcus.
“You married?””
Marcus sighed.
“Danielle, this isn’t the time.””
“No,” Danielle replied quietly.
“Actually, I think this is exactly the time.””
Vanessa looked annoyed.
“Before we get into whatever history you two have, we have a more serious problem.””
Danielle frowned.
“What problem?””
Vanessa pointed toward Nia.
“She stole money from my purse.””
Danielle immediately turned.
“What?””
Nia felt tears burn her eyes.
“Mom—”
She stopped herself.
The word slipped out before she could think.
Everyone noticed.
Especially Marcus.
Danielle’s face softened.
Nia looked down.
She hadn’t called her that in years.
She wasn’t even sure she was allowed to.
But Danielle didn’t correct her.
Instead, she walked closer.
“Nia didn’t steal anything.””
Vanessa laughed.
“You just got here.””
“I know my daughter.””
Vanessa’s expression hardened.
“Do you?””
The question landed like a slap.
Danielle stopped.
For a second, pain crossed her face.
Nia noticed.
She hated seeing it.
“She said she didn’t take it,” Danielle replied.
Vanessa shook her head.
“She also refused to tell us who gave her the watch.””
Marcus looked at Nia.
“Is that true?””
Nia nodded slowly.
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Because I promised.
The words sat in her throat.
She looked at Danielle.
Then at Marcus.
Then at Vanessa.
“I wasn’t trying to hide anything bad.””
Marcus stepped closer.
“Nia, I need you to help me understand.””
His voice wasn’t angry.
But it wasn’t the voice she expected either.
She wanted him to say, I know you didn’t do it.
Instead, he sounded uncertain.
And that hurt.
“I met someone this morning,” Nia finally whispered.
Vanessa immediately looked at Danielle.
Marcus went still.
“You met Danielle?””
Nia nodded.
“Yes.””
Danielle looked surprised.
“She didn’t tell me you knew.””
Marcus’s jaw tightened.
“You came back and saw my daughter before talking to me?””
Danielle looked away.
“I wanted to.””
“But you didn’t.””
“I was scared.””
The room changed.
For the first time, Danielle didn’t look like the confident woman who had walked through the door.
She looked like someone carrying years of regret.
Marcus lowered his voice.
“You should have called me.””
“I tried.””
“When?””
Danielle hesitated.
“Many times.””
Marcus looked away.
Nia watched the two adults standing there, realizing there was a whole story between them that nobody had ever explained.
Vanessa interrupted.
“So while everyone is having an emotional reunion, can we talk about the missing money?””
Danielle looked at her.
“Yes.””
“Because a thousand dollars disappeared today.””
Danielle glanced at Nia.
“And you think she took it?””
Vanessa didn’t answer immediately.
That pause said everything.
Danielle’s expression changed.
“You do.””
Vanessa shrugged.
“The evidence is pretty obvious.””
“What evidence?””
“She has something expensive she cannot explain.””
Danielle looked down at the watch.
Then back at Vanessa.
“I gave her that.””
The room froze.
Nia felt her stomach drop.
Danielle continued.
“I bought the watch for her.””
Marcus stared at her.
“You did?””
“Yes.””
“When?””
“This morning.””
Vanessa’s eyes narrowed.
“And you expect us to believe that?””
Danielle looked confused.
“Why wouldn’t you?””
“Because you just happened to come back after years away and immediately bought her an expensive gift?””
Danielle’s face tightened.
“I wanted to give my daughter something.””
“You wanted to buy forgiveness.””
Nia gasped.
“Vanessa!””
Everyone turned toward her.
Her voice shook.
“Don’t say that.””
Vanessa looked surprised.
But Nia didn’t stop.
“You don’t know what happened.””
“No,” Vanessa replied.
“I know what I see.””
“No, you don’t.””
Nia’s voice cracked.
“You weren’t there.””
The room went quiet.
She rarely raised her voice.
Marcus looked at her carefully.
“Nia…”
But she continued.
“She found me.””
Danielle’s eyes filled with tears.
“She found me after school.””
Marcus looked shocked.
“She approached you?””
Nia nodded.
“She said she wanted to talk.””
“And you went with her?””
“Yes.””
Marcus rubbed his forehead.
“Nia, why didn’t you tell me?””
Because I wanted a mother.
The thought came instantly.
But she couldn’t say it.
Instead, she whispered:
“Because she asked me not to yet.””
Marcus looked at Danielle.
“And you involved her in this?””
Danielle immediately shook her head.
“No. I only asked for a few hours.””
“A few hours of secrecy.””
“I wanted to tell you myself.””
Marcus laughed softly, but there was no happiness in it.
“You disappeared for years, Danielle. And now you come back and ask my daughter to keep secrets from me?””
Nia felt her chest tighten.
This wasn’t what she wanted.
She didn’t want them fighting.
She just wanted one normal day.
One day where having a mother didn’t feel complicated.
Vanessa suddenly picked up her purse.
“Can we please return to the actual issue?””
She opened it.
“The money is still gone.””
Danielle looked at her.
“Did you check everywhere?””
“Yes.””
“Your car?””
“Yes.””
“Your bedroom?””
“Yes.””
“Your bank account?””
Vanessa frowned.
“Why would I check my bank account?””
“Because maybe the money wasn’t taken.””
Vanessa’s eyes narrowed.
“What are you suggesting?””
“I’m suggesting you don’t accuse a child without proof.””
The tension between them became sharp.
Marcus looked exhausted.
“Enough.””
Everyone stopped.
He looked at Nia.
“I need the truth.””
Nia nodded.
“I’m telling you the truth.””
“Where were you this morning?””
“At school.””
“After school?””
“With Danielle.””
“Anyone else know?””
Nia shook her head.
“No.””
Marcus closed his eyes briefly.
Then his phone rang.
Everyone looked over.
He pulled it out.
His expression changed immediately.
“What is it?”” Vanessa asked.
Marcus didn’t answer.
He stared at the screen.
A message.
Then another.
Then another.
Nia watched his face become more serious with every second.
“Marcus?”” Danielle asked.
He looked up.
“This isn’t from the bank.””
Vanessa stepped closer.
“What do you mean?””
Marcus turned the phone around.
Nobody spoke.
Because the message wasn’t about money.
It was a photo.
A photo of Nia.
Taken that morning.
Standing outside the coffee shop with Danielle.
Underneath it was one sentence:
*You should ask your daughter what Danielle really wanted from her.*
Nia felt cold.
Someone had been watching them.
Someone knew Danielle was back.
Marcus looked at Danielle.
“Who sent this?””
Danielle’s face slowly lost its color.
“I don’t know.””
But Nia noticed something.
A tiny reaction.
A flicker of fear.
Danielle did know something.
Marcus saw it too.
“Danielle.””
She didn’t answer.
“Who sent this?””
Danielle looked at Nia.
Then at the phone.
Finally, she whispered:
“There’s only one person who would want you to see this.””
The room waited.
“Who?”” Marcus asked.
Danielle swallowed.
May you like
And said a name Nia had never heard before.
“My sister.””
