Chapter 9: The Life I Was Forced to Forget

I stared at the letter on the floor.

The paper looked ordinary.

A few faded words.

A few trembling lines.

But it had destroyed the only thing I had left.

My belief in myself.

For years, I had thought I was the person who survived.

The good man who lost everything.

The husband who lost his wife.

The father who never got the chance to meet his son.

The man who built a quiet life because he had already lived through the worst.

But now everyone was looking at me like they were waiting for me to remember something.

Something terrible.

“Mark.””

Emily’s voice was soft.

Too soft.

I looked at her.

“Tell me it’s not true.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I wish I could.””

The answer hurt more than any lie.

I stepped backward.

“No.””

Victor watched me carefully.

“Your mind protected you.””

I looked at him.

“My mind?””

He nodded.

“You forgot because you wanted to.””

I laughed bitterly.

“You expect me to believe that?””

“No.””

He stepped closer.

“I expect you to remember.””

Daniel pushed himself up from the floor.

“Don’t listen to him.””

Victor looked at his son.

“You still think you can save him?””

Daniel’s expression hardened.

“I’m not saving him.””

He looked at me.

“I’m trying to give him the truth.””

I stared at him.

The man who had hidden behind my wall.

The man who had been my daughter’s secret guardian.

The man who had caused the accident.

“Then tell me.””

Daniel went silent.

“Tell me who I was.””

The room held its breath.

Finally, Daniel spoke.

“Your name was never just Mark.””

A chill moved through me.

“What does that mean?””

“You were part of Victor’s organization.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

“You were.””

“What organization?””

Victor answered.

“The kind that made problems disappear.””

My stomach twisted.

“No.””

I looked at Emily.

“You knew?””

She nodded.

“I found out after I married you.””

My chest tightened.

“Then why did you stay?””

A tear slipped down her cheek.

“Because I saw the man you became.””

I stared.

“You knew what I had done?””

“I knew what you thought you had done.””

The distinction confused me.

“What does that mean?””

Emily looked at Victor.

“He erased parts of your life.””

Victor smiled.

“I improved it.””

Daniel’s fists tightened.

“You destroyed his memory.””

Victor shrugged.

“He was becoming a problem.””

I looked at him.

“What did I know?””

Nobody answered.

Then Noah spoke.

“The files.””

Everyone turned.

My son held the folder tightly.

“I found the missing pages.””

My heart stopped.

“What pages?””

He opened the folder.

“There were records about a project.””

Victor’s expression changed.

Small.

Almost invisible.

But I saw it.

He was afraid.

“What project?””

Noah looked at me.

“Project Echo.””

The name meant nothing.

But my body reacted.

A sudden pressure in my head.

A flash.

A room.

Bright lights.

A voice saying:

“Subject is responding.””

I grabbed my temple.

“Stop.””

Emily rushed toward me.

“Mark?””

Another memory.

A file.

A photograph.

My own face.

A younger version of me.

Standing beside Victor.

No.

I pushed the memory away.

“I don’t remember.””

Victor smiled.

“That’s because you were made not to.””

Lily moved closer.

“Daddy?””

I looked at her.

And something inside me broke.

Because no matter what I had been…

No matter what I had forgotten…

I knew one thing.

I would never let this man hurt my children.

I stood straight.

“Tell me everything.””

Victor’s smile faded.

Daniel looked surprised.

Emily looked scared.

But I continued.

“Now.””

Daniel nodded slowly.

“Project Echo was an operation designed to manipulate people.””

“How?””

“Memory.””

The word landed heavily.

“You can’t erase someone’s entire life.””

Daniel looked at Victor.

“You can if you know where to cut.””

Victor crossed his arms.

“Memories are not permanent.””

I looked at him.

“You did this to me.””

“Yes.””

The casual answer shocked me.

“You admit it?””

“I gave you a chance.””

“A chance?””

“To start over.””

My anger exploded.

“You stole my life.””

“No.””

Victor shook his head.

“I removed the parts that would destroy it.””

Emily stepped forward.

“You removed the parts that would expose you.””

Victor ignored her.

“Before Emily, before Lily, before this house…”

He looked at me.

“You were my best operative.””

The word made me sick.

Operative.

Not employee.

Not partner.

Something worse.

“What did I do?””

Silence.

Then Daniel answered.

“You found people.””

My stomach tightened.

“What people?””

“People who threatened Victor.””

I stared.

“You mean…”

Daniel nodded.

“Yes.””

I looked at my hands.

Hands that had held my children.

Hands that had built a family.

Hands that maybe had done terrible things.

“No.””

Emily grabbed my arm.

“Mark.””

I pulled away.

“No.””

I looked at her.

“How could you love someone like that?””

Her face broke.

“Because that wasn’t who you were anymore.””

I froze.

“What?””

She cried.

“After you discovered what Victor was doing, you tried to leave.””

Victor’s expression changed.

“You were confused.””

Emily continued.

“You started collecting evidence.””

Daniel nodded.

“You were going to expose him.””

“And that’s why?””

Emily looked at me.

“That’s why he erased you.””

A strange silence followed.

Not relief.

Not peace.

Something else.

A small piece of myself returning.

I looked at Victor.

“You were afraid of me.””

For the first time, he didn’t smile.

“Yes.””

The honesty shocked me.

“Why?””

“Because you knew everything.””

He stepped closer.

“And because you were the only person who could destroy me.””

I looked at the people around me.

Emily.

Daniel.

Noah.

Lily.

My family.

The family I had lost.

The family I had somehow found again.

Then I noticed something.

Something wrong.

“Where is Richard?””

Nobody answered.

My eyes moved around the room.

He was gone.

My stomach dropped.

“Where did he go?””

Victor smiled.

Too late.

A sound came from upstairs.

A door opening.

Everyone froze.

Then Lily whispered:

“Mommy…”

Emily turned pale.

“No.””

I looked at her.

“What?””

Her eyes filled with terror.

“He went to the room.””

“What room?””

Emily didn’t answer.

She was already running.

I followed.

Everyone followed.

We rushed upstairs toward the room we had never opened.

The room at the end of the hallway.

The room Vanessa always said was empty.

The door was open.

Inside was a wall covered with photographs.

Hundreds of them.

Pictures of me.

Of Emily.

Of Noah.

Of Lily.

And in the center…

A photograph of a woman I had never seen before.

Victor stopped behind me.

For the first time, his confidence disappeared.

“No.””

Emily stared at the photograph.

Her face went white.

“Impossible.””

I looked at her.

“Who is she?””

Emily whispered:

“She was the first person who discovered Project Echo.””

“Who?””

Emily slowly turned toward me.

And said:

“Your mother.””

The room went silent.

I stared at the photograph.

My mother.

A woman I remembered losing when I was young.

A woman everyone told me had died naturally.

But beneath the photograph was a note.

Three words.

Three words written in my handwriting.

*I found her.*

My blood ran cold.

Because I didn’t remember writing it.

Then the lights flickered.

The door behind us slammed shut.

And from somewhere inside the room, a recording started playing.

A voice filled the darkness.

My own voice.

Younger.

Colder.

“If you’re hearing this, Mark…”

Everyone froze.

The recording continued.

“Then Victor failed.””

A pause.

May you like

Then my own voice whispered:

“And I finally remembered.””
