Chapter 8: The Father Behind the Lies
Nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
The man standing outside the broken window looked at Daniel like he was looking at a ghost.
And Daniel looked back the same way.
“Son.””
The word echoed through the room.
I looked at Daniel.
Then at the stranger.
Then back at Daniel.
“No.””
Daniel’s face had lost all color.
“Dad?””
The man smiled.
Not warmly.
Not lovingly.
Like he had just confirmed something he already knew.
“You’re older than I imagined.””
Daniel took a step back.
“You’re dead.””
The man tilted his head.
“So many people have said that about me.””
The same words.
The same cruelty.
A chill moved through me.
This family had too many ghosts.
Too many people who were supposed to be gone.
Emily moved closer to me.
“Mark, get the children away.””
I looked at her.
“Who is he?””
She hesitated.
And that hesitation terrified me.
“His name is Victor Reed.””
Daniel’s expression tightened.
“My father.””
The man smiled.
“Finally.””
He stepped through the broken window.
“Everyone knows who I am.””
I immediately moved Lily behind me.
Noah stood beside me.
For the first time, I saw something in my son’s face.
Fear.
Not fear of a stranger.
Fear of someone he already knew.
“You know him,” I whispered.
Noah nodded slightly.
“Not like this.””
Victor looked at him.
“And you must be my grandson.””
Noah’s jaw tightened.
“I’m not your family.””
Victor smiled.
“Everyone is family eventually.””
The sentence made my skin crawl.
Vanessa whispered:
“Mark, don’t listen to him.””
I looked at her.
“Why?””
Because I needed to know.
“Why should I not listen to him?””
She looked broken.
“Because everything that happened started with him.””
Victor laughed softly.
“That’s not fair.””
Nobody responded.
He looked around the house.
“The same house.””
His eyes moved toward the hidden wall.
“Still hiding secrets.””
I felt anger rise.
“You built this?””
Victor looked at me.
“No.””
A pause.
“But I built the reason it exists.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“You destroyed everyone.””
Victor’s smile disappeared.
“Careful.””
“You killed Emily.””
“No.””
Victor looked at him.
“You did.””
Daniel froze.
The room went silent.
I looked at Daniel.
“What?””
Daniel closed his eyes.
“Mark…”
“No.””
I stepped forward.
“Not again.””
My voice shook.
“Not another secret.””
Victor smiled.
“Your family has always been terrible at honesty.””
Emily moved between us.
“Don’t do this.””
Victor ignored her.
“Daniel was the one driving that night.””
My heart stopped.
I looked at Daniel.
“Is that true?””
Daniel looked down.
A painful silence.
Then:
“Yes.””
Lily gasped.
I felt like the floor disappeared.
“No.””
Daniel’s eyes filled with tears.
“I didn’t mean for it to happen.””
“You were there.””
“Yes.””
“You were driving.””
“Yes.””
The answers came like punches.
Emily reached for my arm.
“Mark, listen.””
I pulled away.
“No.””
I looked at Daniel.
“My wife died.””
His face broke.
“I know.””
“And you were there.””
“Yes.””
My hands shook.
“Why should I believe anything you say?””
Daniel whispered:
“Because I’ve spent eight years trying to fix what I broke.””
Victor laughed.
“Fix?””
He looked disgusted.
“You hid in a wall.””
Daniel looked at him.
“You forced me to.””
Victor smiled.
“There it is.””
I looked between them.
“What happened?””
Nobody answered.
So I shouted.
“What happened?””
The entire room went still.
Finally, Daniel spoke.
“Emily discovered what my father was doing.””
Victor’s face hardened.
“She discovered lies.””
Daniel continued.
“She found documents.””
“What documents?””
“Proof.””
Emily nodded.
“Proof that Victor had been covering up crimes for years.””
Victor laughed.
“You make it sound dramatic.””
“You ruined lives.””
“I built an empire.””
The coldness in his voice was worse than anger.
He truly believed it.
I looked at Emily.
“And the children?””
She swallowed.
“Victor wanted control.””
Victor looked at Lily and Noah.
“Children are valuable.””
I stepped forward.
“Don’t.””
He ignored me.
“They carry information. They carry inheritance. They carry the future.””
Lily grabbed my hand.
I squeezed it.
“She’s not a thing.””
Victor smiled.
“You still don’t understand.””
“No.””
I stared at him.
“I understand perfectly.””
I looked at Noah.
“He lost fourteen years.””
I looked at Lily.
“She lost her mother.””
Then Emily.
“She lost her life.””
My voice hardened.
“And I lost eight years believing everyone I loved was gone.””
Victor’s expression remained calm.
“Loss is part of progress.””
The words made me sick.
Daniel suddenly moved.
Fast.
He grabbed Victor by the collar.
“You don’t get to talk about progress.””
For the first time, Victor looked angry.
“You’re still weak.””
Daniel’s face tightened.
“And you’re still a monster.””
Victor shoved him away.
Daniel hit the floor.
I moved forward, but Emily stopped me.
“Mark.””
I looked at her.
“There’s something else.””
I already knew I wouldn’t like it.
“What?””
She looked at Victor.
Then at me.
“Victor wasn’t just after the children.””
I waited.
“He was after you.””
I frowned.
“Me?””
She nodded.
“Because Emily’s evidence wasn’t only about him.””
My stomach tightened.
“What else?””
Emily reached into her coat.
She pulled out a small envelope.
My name was written on it.
Again.
The same handwriting.
Emily’s.
“I kept this for years.””
I stared.
“Why?””
“Because I was afraid.””
“Of what?””
She looked at Victor.
“Of what would happen if you knew.””
Victor smiled.
“Open it.””
I looked at him.
“Why would I?””
“Because then you’ll understand.””
Emily whispered:
“Mark, don’t.””
That stopped me.
Because Emily wasn’t afraid of Victor.
She was afraid of what was inside.
I opened the envelope.
Inside was a single page.
A letter.
The handwriting was shaky.
But unmistakable.
*Mark,*
*If you are reading this, it means I failed to protect you.*
My breathing stopped.
I continued.
*I need you to know something about the night I disappeared.*
My hands trembled.
*You were not supposed to survive.*
I looked up.
Everyone was watching me.
I read the next line.
And my entire body went cold.
*Victor didn’t order my death because I found his secret.*
A pause.
Then:
*He ordered it because I found yours.*
I looked at Emily.
She started crying.
Victor smiled.
And Daniel whispered:
“No…”
I looked down at the final sentence.
The sentence that changed everything.
*Mark, before you met me, you were part of the same organization you spent your life trying to destroy.*
The room spun.
“No.””
I looked at Emily.
“No.””
She couldn’t meet my eyes.
Victor stepped closer.
“Now you understand.””
I shook my head.
“I don’t remember.””
Victor smiled.
“That’s the point.””
The letter slipped from my hand.
Lily looked up at me.
“Daddy?””
I couldn’t answer.
Because suddenly the question wasn’t who had been hiding behind the wall.
The question wasn’t who had lied.
May you like
The question was much worse.
Who had I been before I forgot?
