Chapter 7: The Woman Who Came Back
I forgot how to breathe.
The woman standing at the bottom of the stairs looked exactly like a memory I had spent eight years trying to survive.
Same eyes.
Same face.
Same small scar near her eyebrow.
The scar I used to kiss whenever she complained about looking imperfect.
Emily.
My mind screamed that it was impossible.
My heart didn’t care.
“Emily…”
Her name left my mouth like a prayer.
Like a question.
Like a wound reopening.
She stared at me.
And tears filled her eyes.
“Mark.””
One word.
That was all it took.
The entire world I had built after losing her collapsed.
I stepped forward.
But I stopped.
Because there was something wrong.
Something my heart didn’t want to admit.
Emily looked older.
Of course she did.
Eight years had passed.
But not in the way I expected.
There was pain in her face.
A kind of pain that belonged to someone who had spent years running.
Not someone who had been living a normal life.
“You’re alive.””
My voice broke.
Emily nodded slowly.
“Yes.””
Behind me, Lily whispered:
“Mommy?””
Emily’s expression shattered.
She looked at the little girl standing beside me.
And for the first time that night, all the secrets disappeared from her face.
There was only a mother seeing her child.
“Lily…”
My daughter stepped backward.
Not because she was afraid.
Because she was confused.
“You know my name.””
Emily covered her mouth.
“I’ve known your name every second of every day.””
Lily looked at me.
Then at Emily.
Then at Vanessa.
Nobody knew what to say.
Nobody except Richard.
He moved suddenly.
“Everyone needs to calm down.””
I turned toward him.
“Don’t.””
My voice was quiet.
Dangerously quiet.
“Not one more word from you.””
Richard stopped.
For the first time, he looked uncertain.
Emily noticed.
And her expression changed.
“Richard.””
He looked at her.
“You shouldn’t have come.””
A cold feeling moved through me.
“You know him.””
Emily looked at me.
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Her eyes filled with regret.
“Because he was part of the reason I disappeared.””
The room went silent.
I looked around.
Everyone had pieces of this story.
Everyone except me.
“What happened that night?””
Emily looked at Vanessa.
Then Daniel.
Then Noah.
Finally, she looked at me.
“I never died.””
I laughed once.
A broken sound.
“Yeah. I figured that out.””
She flinched.
I hated that I had done it.
But I couldn’t stop.
“You let me believe you were dead.””
“I had no choice.””
“Everyone says that.””
My voice rose.
“Everyone always says they had no choice.””
Emily took a step forward.
“I tried to come back.””
“When?””
“Every day.””
I stared at her.
“Then why didn’t you?””
She looked at Lily.
“Because they threatened her.””
My anger disappeared.
“What?””
Emily swallowed.
“They knew about Lily.””
She looked at Noah.
“And him.””
My eyes moved to my son.
“They knew about both children?””
“Yes.””
Emily nodded.
“Someone inside the hospital changed the records. Someone made it look like Lily was the only baby born.””
I felt sick.
“Why?””
“Because twins were never supposed to exist.””
The words made no sense.
“Why would anyone care?””
Emily looked at Richard.
“Because one of my children was proof.””
Richard’s face hardened.
“Don’t.””
Emily ignored him.
“Years ago, Richard’s company was involved in illegal experiments.””
I stared.
“What?””
Noah stepped forward.
“He wasn’t just a businessman.””
Richard’s expression darkened.
“Be careful.””
Emily continued.
“They tested medications on people who couldn’t fight back.””
Daniel’s jaw tightened.
“I found out.””
Emily nodded.
“You did.””
I looked at Daniel.
“And you?””
He looked ashamed.
“I tried to expose them.””
Richard laughed.
“You tried.””
Daniel ignored him.
“Emily helped me.””
“And then?”” I asked.
Emily’s eyes dropped.
“Then Richard found out.””
The room became heavier.
“He threatened you.””
“Yes.””
“And the accident?””
Emily looked away.
“It wasn’t meant to kill me.””
My heart stopped.
“What?””
Richard’s face changed.
Emily continued.
“It was meant to scare me.””
She looked at me.
“But when Mark showed up…”
She stopped.
I felt cold.
“What?””
Emily’s voice became softer.
“He realized you knew too much.””
I stared.
“I didn’t know anything.””
“You knew me.””
The answer was simple.
Painfully simple.
“You loved me.””
A tear rolled down her cheek.
“And that made you dangerous.””
I looked at Richard.
“You tried to kill me?””
Richard didn’t answer.
That was enough.
My fists tightened.
“You destroyed my family.””
Richard looked almost tired.
“You have no idea what was at stake.””
“No.””
I stepped forward.
“I know exactly what was at stake.””
I looked at Lily.
“No child should grow up without their parents.””
I looked at Noah.
“No child should spend their life thinking they were abandoned.””
Then I looked back at Richard.
“And no man should get to decide who lives and who disappears.””
For the first time, Richard looked angry.
“You think this ends because Emily walked through that door?””
He smiled.
“You’re still behind.””
The confidence returned.
“What does that mean?””
He looked at Emily.
“She never told you the worst part.””
Emily’s face changed.
“Richard.””
My stomach tightened.
“What?””
He looked at me.
“Ask her where she was the last eight years.””
I looked at Emily.
She said nothing.
“Emily?””
Her silence answered before her words did.
“I was hiding.””
“Where?””
She looked down.
“Somewhere safe.””
“Where?””
She hesitated.
And then:
“With the people who were helping me.””
I waited.
“Who?””
Emily looked at Noah.
Then Daniel.
Then Vanessa.
Finally, she whispered:
“The same people who helped create the accident.””
The room exploded.
“What?””
Daniel stepped back.
“No.””
Vanessa covered her mouth.
Emily’s eyes filled with tears.
“I’m sorry.””
I stared.
“Who?””
She looked toward the darkness outside.
“They’re not gone.””
A sound came from outside.
Cars.
Multiple cars.
My body reacted before my mind.
We weren’t alone.
Emily whispered:
“The people who wanted the children hidden.””
The front windows suddenly shattered.
Everyone screamed.
Glass fell across the floor.
Lily cried out.
I grabbed her and pulled her down.
Noah moved toward us.
Daniel grabbed Vanessa.
Richard disappeared into the shadows.
“Where is he going?”” I shouted.
Emily looked terrified.
“He’s not leaving.””
“What?””
“He’s going to them.””
I looked toward the back hallway.
Richard was gone.
Emily grabbed my arm.
“Mark.””
Her eyes were filled with fear.
“The reason Richard always stayed close…”
She swallowed.
“Was because he wasn’t the person in charge.””
A car door slammed outside.
Then another.
Then another.
Emily whispered the words that made my blood run cold.
“He was working for someone else.””
I looked at the broken window.
A figure appeared outside.
Not Richard.
Someone older.
Someone everyone in the room recognized.
Daniel went completely still.
“No…”
Emily’s face turned pale.
The person stepped into the light.
And spoke one sentence.
A sentence that made Noah drop the folder from his hands.
“Hello, Daniel.””
A pause.
May you like
Then:
“It’s been a long time, son.””
