Chapter 5: The Child Nobody Knew About
“Let her go.””
I barely recognized my own voice.
It wasn’t a request.
It wasn’t a warning.
It was the last thing I said before losing control.
Richard stood in the hallway with Lily trapped against him, one arm wrapped around her shoulders. She wasn’t screaming anymore.
That scared me.
She was too quiet.
Too frozen.
Her eyes were locked on mine.
“Daddy…”
The sound of that one word nearly destroyed me.
“Richard,” I said slowly, forcing myself to stay calm.
“You don’t want to do this.””
His expression didn’t change.
“You still don’t understand.””
“No.””
I took one step forward.
“I understand exactly one thing.””
My eyes stayed on Lily.
“You’re holding my daughter.””
Richard glanced down at her.
Then back at me.
“That’s the problem.””
My jaw tightened.
“What is?””
“You keep calling her yours.””
The words felt like a blade.
Behind me, Vanessa whispered:
“Richard, stop.””
He ignored her.
“You built an entire life on a lie, Mark.””
“I didn’t know.””
“No.””
His voice became sharper.
“You didn’t.””
A strange sadness crossed his face.
“And that’s why you’re the only innocent person in this room.””
I looked toward Daniel.
Then Vanessa.
Then back at him.
“What are you talking about?””
Richard took a slow breath.
“The night Emily died, she wasn’t just protecting Lily.””
The hallway became colder.
“She was protecting another child.””
My heart stopped.
Another child.
The words echoed.
“No.””
Richard watched my reaction.
“You feel it, don’t you?””
I shook my head.
“No.””
But my body already knew.
There was a memory.
A memory I had buried so deeply that I had convinced myself it wasn’t important.
The hospital.
The flashing lights.
The doctor standing in front of me.
The words:
“We’re sorry.””
I remembered Emily.
I remembered losing her.
But there had always been something strange about that night.
A gap.
A missing piece.
“What child?”” I asked.
Richard didn’t answer.
Instead, he looked at Vanessa.
“Tell him.””
Vanessa’s face went blank.
“No.””
Richard smiled.
“You see?””
He looked at me.
“She still thinks she can protect you from the truth.””
I turned toward my wife.
“Vanessa.””
She shook her head.
“Mark, please.””
“Who was the other child?””
Her lips trembled.
“I didn’t want you to know this way.””
The room spun.
“Know what?””
Vanessa looked at Lily.
Then at me.
“You and Emily had twins.””
The words didn’t make sense.
I stared at her.
“What?””
“You had two babies.””
My fingers went numb.
“No.””
Vanessa nodded through tears.
“A boy and a girl.””
I felt like the air had been pulled from the room.
Lily.
A boy.
A girl.
Two babies.
Two lives.
“No,” I repeated.
“I would have known.””
Vanessa looked away.
“You should have.””
That sentence hurt more than anything.
I looked at Daniel.
His face was full of pain.
“You knew.””
He nodded.
My anger exploded.
“You knew I had another child?””
“I tried to tell you.””
“When?””
“After Emily died.””
I stepped closer.
“You had eight years.””
“I was trying to keep them alive.””
“Who?””
Daniel’s eyes moved toward Richard.
The answer was clear.
Richard tightened his grip on Lily.
“Enough.””
His voice changed.
The calm mask disappeared.
“Everyone always wants to blame me.””
“You kidnapped a child.””
“No.””
He looked down at Lily.
“I protected one.””
I almost laughed.
“You expect me to believe that?””
Richard’s face hardened.
“You think I wanted any of this?””
He looked at Vanessa.
“You think I wanted to spend eight years cleaning up your mistakes?””
Vanessa flinched.
“What did you do?””
Richard looked at her.
“I fixed what you broke.””
Daniel moved forward.
“You destroyed everything.””
Richard looked at him.
“You killed Emily.””
Silence.
The accusation hit the room.
I looked at Daniel.
“No.””
Daniel’s eyes closed.
“Mark…”
“No.””
I pointed at him.
“Tell me he’s lying.””
Daniel didn’t answer.
And that was the worst answer.
My heart pounded.
“Daniel.””
His voice was barely audible.
“I didn’t mean for it to happen.””
Lily looked up.
“Uncle Daniel…”
The word stopped me.
Uncle.
She knew him as family.
Not a stranger.
Not a monster.
Daniel looked at her with tears in his eyes.
“I’m sorry.””
I stared.
“You’re her uncle?””
He nodded.
“Emily was my sister.””
Everything was too much.
Every secret had another secret underneath.
Every answer created another question.
“Where is my son?””
Nobody moved.
The silence was immediate.
Terrifying.
I looked at Vanessa.
“Where is he?””
She started crying.
“I don’t know.””
The words broke something inside me.
“You don’t know?””
Richard answered.
“He’s alive.””
I turned.
“What?””
Richard looked at me.
“He survived.””
My breathing stopped.
“Where?””
He didn’t answer.
“Where is my son?””
Richard’s eyes narrowed.
“First, you need to understand why he disappeared.””
I stepped forward.
“Tell me.””
“He wasn’t taken because someone wanted money.””
Richard glanced at Daniel.
“He was taken because of what he knew.””
My eyebrows tightened.
“A baby?””
Richard shook his head.
“Not just a baby.””
He looked at Vanessa.
“Emily discovered something before she died.””
“What?””
Richard smiled slightly.
“She discovered who Daniel really was.””
I looked at Daniel.
“What does that mean?””
Daniel looked down.
Richard answered.
“He wasn’t just Emily’s brother.””
Daniel’s expression changed.
“Stop.””
Richard continued.
“He was involved with people Emily was trying to escape from.””
My eyes narrowed.
“Is that true?””
Daniel didn’t respond.
“Answer me.””
Finally, he whispered:
“Yes.””
The word crushed me.
“You lied too.””
“I was trying to protect you.””
“Everyone says that.””
I looked around the room.
“Everyone says they lied because they were protecting me.””
My voice cracked.
“But nobody ever protected me from the truth.””
A small sound came from Lily.
She was crying again.
I immediately looked at her.
“Daddy…”
Richard loosened his grip slightly.
A mistake.
A small one.
But enough.
I moved.
I grabbed Lily’s arm and pulled her toward me.
Richard tried to hold on, but Daniel suddenly threw himself forward.
The two men crashed into the wall.
I pulled Lily behind me.
“Run to Vanessa.””
She obeyed immediately.
Vanessa grabbed her.
For one second, I felt relief.
Then I heard Daniel groan.
I turned.
Richard was standing.
Daniel was on the floor.
And Richard had something in his hand.
A small black device.
A phone.
He looked at the screen.
Then smiled.
“He’s awake.””
Nobody spoke.
Richard looked at me.
“Your son.””
My heart stopped.
“What?””
Richard turned the phone around.
On the screen was a photograph.
A teenage boy.
Maybe fourteen years old.
Standing beside a window.
And I knew him.
Not because I had met him.
Because he looked exactly like me.
The same eyes.
The same expression.
The same small scar above his eyebrow.
A scar I had.
A scar I got when I was a child.
My hands began shaking.
“That’s impossible.””
Richard watched me.
“No.””
He smiled.
“That’s your son.””
I stared at the screen.
The boy looked directly at the camera.
Like he knew someone was watching.
Then Richard’s phone rang.
He answered.
Nobody spoke.
He listened.
Then his face changed.
For the first time that night…
Richard looked afraid.
“What do you mean he escaped?””
A pause.
Then he slowly looked at me.
The phone lowered.
And he whispered:
“Your son knows where the missing years went.””
I felt Lily grab my hand.
Vanessa stepped closer.
Daniel pushed himself off the floor.
And somewhere outside the house…
A car door slammed.
Someone else had arrived.
May you like
Someone who knew the truth.
Someone who had been waiting eight years to come home.
